*Can we be reassured that the Gender Recognition Act will be reformed and fixed to ensure the safety, protection and validation of trans and non-binary people in the UK?

Can you promise us that this will be put into action, rather than simply saying you will, when you become prime minister?*

Yes, I can definitely promise that, because this is long overdue. We will reform the Gender Recognition Act to include self-identification for trans people – and we will make sure the voices of non-binary people are finally heard in our review of the GRA consultation.
Trans people will no longer have to endure invasive, dehumanising and lengthy processes in order to have their gender recognised. And we’ll also amend the Equality Act 2010.

We need to remove the outdated language in there, and we’re going to ensure there are proper protections for trans people against discrimination.

Well i'm off to spoil my ballot.

BovaryX · 12/12/2019 06:47

Badger
I am very sorry to hear about what you are going through. It’s awful Badger and you should not be put through this. I hope things improve for you.

thecompletenonsequitur · 12/12/2019 06:53

Layla Morans constituency. The vote will be Conservative.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 12/12/2019 06:53

I’m so sorry Badger.

BeardedVulture · 12/12/2019 07:03

At this stage, all any of us can do is vote with our conscience. It isn’t our fault the absolute shower of bastards running this country have given us an election where we have to decide what flavour of shit sandwich we’d most like to eat.

Coldwatershock · 12/12/2019 07:14

Looks like a spokesperson a while back said Labour would change 'reassignment' to 'identity' (so no'one ever feels hurt), and 'transsexualism' will go Nothing said about removing sex or changing it to gender. Or am I so desperate never to vote Tory that I'm in la-la land, I wonder? What a day to be voting as a woman...

Floisme · 12/12/2019 07:31

On reflection, I have to say something about that article looks off to me. I'm not doubting the link but I find it slightly odd that Labour (Dawn Butler aside) would spend weeks ducking and diving to avoid the question only for Corbyn to show their hand on the eve of an election. It certainly doesn't give me any more confidence but I think we all knew Corbyn himself was pro self ID. I think I'm going to discount it, although I'm not voting until this evening and I'll be weighing it up until the last minute. What a day indeed.

I also think trying to shame women who've spent weeks and weeks agonising over their vote is pretty despicable behaviour.

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 08:06

The efforts to shame people over their vote and whether they vote or not is disgraceful. It's bullying.

My normally benign local Facebook page (local news and events that sort of thing) that I follow has been flooded in recent weeks with posts from Labour supporters (many who have never posted before). It's all the same thing and I've found it overly aggressive.

I don't think those that tell you you HAVE to vote or try and guilt you into it realise that it pushes people the other way. Policies and attitudes win votes not pressuring people.

nopocketsgrr · 12/12/2019 08:06

Exactly.

Women have zero real choice here. A vote for any party is a vote for misogyny and gaslighting (which interestingly my spell checker wants to correct to 'gal sighting') and their own special flavour of cruelty. Every option at this point is a trap, a different combination of evils, all with a price to pay.

I couldn't blame any woman for voting any way or no way.

slipperywhensparticus · 12/12/2019 08:10

That's not what he said he hasnt thrown women under the bus like boris and whoever is lib dem and he cant get anything through parliament without votes and local labour wont vote for that so I'm voting for him

Lordamighty · 12/12/2019 08:11

John McDonnell stated quite clearly a few days ago on a Mumsnet web chat that Labour intend to reform the GRA.

Sexnotgender · 12/12/2019 08:12

I also think trying to shame women who've spent weeks and weeks agonising over their vote is pretty despicable behaviour.

Yip, I’ve tortured myself with all the options and I need to do what is right for me and my conscience.
I’d love to vote labour as they (used to) align with my values.

Clymene · 12/12/2019 08:14

It's from an interview they did in 2016. It even says so at the top of the article.

The only people who chose to publish that 'on the eve of the election' is Prick News.

ValancyRedfern · 12/12/2019 08:15

@EmpressLesbianInChair I used to live in your constituency (we met in Jam Circus once - I've change my name) My partner had a phone conversation with our MP about self id and he felt it was very positive and she was GC. I'm sad to hear she hasn't got the courage to maintain that stance.

weebarra · 12/12/2019 08:15

Oh dear. I'm in an SNP / Labour marginal seat and had pretty much decided to vote labour as our current MP is very good. Now I'm struggling again. Worried it'll be a split vote which will end up returning a Conservative MP.

stillathing · 12/12/2019 08:26

So, if its true that this article was slightly shifty, does that mean Penis News don't back Labour?

Cwenthryth · 12/12/2019 08:26

I’m voting for a hung Parliament so that Johnson and Corbyn get the sack, and a Labour leader who stands up for women can be elected.

Yes, this would be best case scenario I think. We can only each do what we think is right, but knowing other women are feeling they have to vote for parties who say they want to take our rights away, for the long term greater good, makes me feel a little less hopeless about it all today.

Cwenthryth · 12/12/2019 08:29

Oh FFS! That really is stooping low....but why? It loses Labour more votes than it gives them, only the Tories stand to benefit from turning gender critical women away from Labour.

Clymene · 12/12/2019 08:35

Prick News wants GRA reform so I assume they are trying to persuade their readers to vote labour

Ereshkigal · 12/12/2019 08:47

It's not true that all of this interview was from 2016. See here where he references the GRA consultation which took place last year.

Yes, I can definitely promise that, because this is long overdue. We will reform the Gender Recognition Act to include self-identification for trans people – and we will make sure the voices of non-binary people are finally heard in our review of the GRA consultation.

Beamur · 12/12/2019 08:50

Good spot on the dates being fudged.
Any legislation on this issue will not get through on the sly.
I still think the vast majority of people have no idea about the implications of self ID. Once they do we might see a more measured approach.

SingingLily · 12/12/2019 08:50

Commitment to Self ID confirmed by John McDonnell in the webchat on here on Friday.

How old does the news have to be before it can be discounted?

Six days? Six hours? Six minutes?

Clymene · 12/12/2019 08:56

Good spot Ereshkigal.

Corbyn is a wanker but he's not quite as much of a wanker as Johnson who is a thoroughly nasty human being. I can't see how any woman who calls herself a feminist can vote for him tbh.

What a utter shit show this election is :(

AnotherNightWatering · 12/12/2019 09:15

I feel the front cover of Private Eye this week sums it up for everyone. Sad
