@MNHQ / anyone

I've seen this tweet and wondering if it's verifiable a) that MN had a commercial contract that's ending and b) if yes, that's anything to do with transphobia?

The twitter thread references *@BirdsEye and @BirdsEye*UK

Growing-up-trans. @DadTrans

Parents of trans kids telling companies how much it hurts to see their advertising associated with transphobia works. Delighted to be able to buy
@BirdsEye fishfingers again after they confirmed they're no longer in a business relationship with #Mumsnet the #transphobia brand.

Does this mean I have to back to own brand potato waffles? I hope not.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/04/2019 12:11

Asda!!!!

Oooohhhh nice

Are they asda own?

JackyHolyoake · 28/04/2019 12:13

I suspect that, if someone has impersonated Birds Eye in that tweet, Birds Eye's lawyers will be in touch very quickly with @DadTrans for the name of that account.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 28/04/2019 12:16

A fish grip! That's amazing thanks girl

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 28/04/2019 12:24

The traffic on the boards has increased massively since the GRA proposals came out. Birds Eye are shooting themselves in the foot.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 28/04/2019 12:28

cigar that is not the hill I'm prepared to die on.
Don't hate me y'all

RedToothBrush · 28/04/2019 12:39

I'd love to be a fly on the wall of Birdseye on Monday.

Ring Ring, Ring Ring
MNHQ: "Hello Captain, We've heard a rumour circulating on social media that you are currently boycotting advertising with us because of transphobia on our website. We have had numerous users concerned by this this and would like a statement. Our users buy rather a lot of fish fingers from you, so are keen to know your political stance on this matter as it means something to them. If this information on social media is the correct and you consider that our website is transphobic will you stand by that? We believe there are a number of issues relating to trans issues which need discussion as part of free speech and we are willing to give our users the right to do so on our website as long as they stick to respectful debate and observe the law. We therefore think that being accused of transphobia is rather strong, unfair and could potentially cause damage to our brand. As such it is possible that if you do stick by the opinion without evidence to the contrary that you consider the site to be transphobic, rather than merely discussing sensitive issues which are important to our users, this may be potentially defamatory statement which could, if MN felt like it, be actionable by law."

Captain Birdseye: "Errrrrrr, I'll get back to you"

Ok so there might be a huge amount of licence about MN might actually say to Birdseye. My point is that if Birdseye are challenged directly and it goes to someone senior, they are potentially getting themselves into a possible legally dodgy position.

What do I think Birdseye will do? Not much more than a bland statement about contracts. At best. Unless they are stupid.

GirlDownUnder · 28/04/2019 12:42

Jacky that email screen shot is so lacking in info, e.g. date, company name, subject line, blah... but it’s pissed me off that the TRA are crowing. And if it’s (highly likely) crap, then they’ve maligned MN and misrepresented BirdEye at the least, right?

KatvonHostileExtremist if you’re not prepared to die on hills, I’ll have to withdraw the fish grip. Sorry. Grin

It's very sloppily written. You could even describe it as a bit fishy. I would hope a "Head Of" would know not to capitilise the R in regards.

Anyway, I am off to google fish balls, they sound awesome.

ZebrasAreBras · 28/04/2019 13:16

"a bit fishy"

Grin Grin Grin

OrchidInTheSun · 28/04/2019 13:17

Even if that email is from Birds Eye, it has nothing to do with transphobia. It's just confirming that a contract period is over and thanking DadTrans for his letter which I'm sure they have filed in the ranting nutjob folder.

Poor old DadTrans is clutching at straws again. Possibly because it's quite hard to pick things up with fish fingers?

GirlDownUnder · 28/04/2019 13:34

Well, let's hope DadTrans hasnt been fed a fishy story cos they're busy amplifying the message Hmm

Anti-transphobia companies love to shout their anti-transphobia from the rooftops.

The absence of anti-transphobia point-scoring by the company in this case suggests to me that the ending of the business deal it is not because of transphobia.

ZebrasAreBras · 28/04/2019 14:08

Fishy fake news, I think. The letter - assuming it's real - simply states "the contract came to an end last October" - they've not cancelled, or terminated anything "due to transphobic hate speech" or whatever it is we're constantly accused of.

The twitterati TRA are currently badgering Birdseye to "confirm it ended the contract due to 'transphobia' and to confirm Brids Eye stands with the trans community. So far, no response from Birds Eye - although whoever operates the Birds Eye twitter account will probably be mightily relieved when they can go back to answering tweets about plasters found in frozen pies Grin

exLtEveDallas · 28/04/2019 14:19

Uh if the contract came to an end last October, why have the Fish Fingers and Chicken fillets I bought yesterday still got Mumsnet Rated on them? Just how old are they?

R0wantrees · 28/04/2019 14:22

DadTrans took a position about/against 'Mumsnet' some time ago:

from October 2017thread:

He seems quite well connected & had recent piece in the i :
'This is what it is really like to seek healthcare for your trans child
The media paints a picture of 'fast-tracked' services and easy access to hormones. The reality couldn't be more different'

The background to the comment by Ed Milliband quoted at the Home Affairs hearing was discussed on a MN thread in November 2017

questions were asked by @ pisacake 25/11/17 21:50
with comment on what was believed to be a significant meeting with Ed Milliband prior to his statement:

"Those Miliband guests in full:

  1. Helen Webberley - bonkers GP, not allowed to practise unsupervised, runs online trans clinic.
  2. @ DadTrans - works for Mermaids
  3. Paris Lees - trans rentaquote, invited to Mumsnet blogfest www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/2775504-Why-is-Paris-Lees-speaking-at-Mumsnet-and-are-MN-seeking-Spartacus-tees

'Growing Up Transgender' blog:
"In November 2017, (@ DadTrans) was interviewed by Ed Miliband and Geoff Lloyd for their Reasons to be Cheerful Podcast.

The episode went on to jointly win broadcast of the year at the 2018 Pink News Awards

Receiving the award, ex-Labour leader Miliband joked: “This makes up for the general election in 2015.”

Mumsnet rated is on UK products, so why are they @-ing the US Birdseye? (Other than 'because they are thick')

...and you'd think that the 'Head of Consumer Services' (shouldn't that be Customer Services or Consumer Care?) would know it was Mumsnet, not MumsNet wouldn't you?

GirlDownUnder · 28/04/2019 15:01

Thanks for the background R0
(Still wanna know how how you do the encyclopaedic referencing - ‘nother level skills!)

Hahaha exLt thick you say? Who am I to argue. I too was confused by the slippery switch back between the UK and US BirdsEye to kEep up.

I simply don't believe it. The tra's spin and lie and twist the truth out of all recognition. This is no different, I'm sure of it.
