Is this true ? I thought shivering with a fever was completely normal ?! This happens to me and my kids everytime we get a temp…

Coupled with an abscess means it can be very serious.

Yeah, but shivering with a fever from influenza doesn't indicate the same risk to your life as shivering with a fever from a huge abcess surrounded by rapidly-spreading cellulitis does.

Shivering with a fever from certain illnesses is completely normal but those symptoms alongside other issues can be indicative of infection.

I had a dose of COVID a couple of months ago. Had a bit of a shivery time.

@cloudbabies - think of it like this. If you have a virus etc, the symptoms are whole body, and you know that viruses are all throughout your body.

If you have an infection in ONE place, like a spot, a few white blood cells etc should just be rushing to that one spot, and dealing with it. It should be shut down before it spreads.

If you start having whole body symptoms that's not a good sign because it means the infection is everywhere, your while body is referring to it, not just the spot. That's not exactly how it works, but pretty much.

So, from something like ops abcess not from something like covid/another virus? I understand now, thanks.

@deadembarrased so relieved you are in hospital and getting treatment. The operation is a surprise. It must have been bad.
Don't underestimate how long it will take to recover from this. Just the antibiotics alone will make you exhausted and you are fighting something serious.
Relax as much as you can. Thinking of you.

Not sure if you have read the previous posts @LittlePaintBox but Confessionsofa40yearold seems to have been proven a liar - claims here to be medically trained but several claims elsewhere to be a cleaner for 20 years. Not absolutely an impossible combination but most unlikely when you consider the quality of their 'advice'.

Thank you, yes I did eventually see what had been posted. That post said she was '20 years a cleaner' and didn't advise a splash of salt water but Viakal! Fortunately, OP has plenty of common sense, and ignored this dangerous advice from someone who claims to be a medic, but coyly refuses to say what her credentials are.

And incidentally, OP, what a star you are! You still managed to speak up for your son while feeling really dreadful, and have managed to get your ex to give you respite care. I really hope you can go home on Monday and have a lovely, peaceful rest!

Apologies for not being clear. The type of shivering I had with cellulitis was what's called a rigor - it was like a very bad actor pretending to be cold! I was not only shivering but my teeth were chattering! I also had to ask DH to fill a hot water bottle for me, when it was really warm outside.

DaVinciGirl · 22/09/2026 20:24

Hope you’re feeling a little better now @deadembarrased ?

My daughter had rigors once and it was terrifying. She also refused her antibiotics as they were disgusting. As a result she then refused calpol. Had to take her to hospital and the nurse managed to trick her into having them.

Nottoobadreally · 26/09/2026 01:58

@deadembarrased are you home now? A little worried as not much update after your surgery. I hope you're just getting on with life and havent become more poorly.

Elboob · 27/09/2026 16:27

@deadembarrased how are you now? Are you home?
