God I hope I never get a boil or abscess. My inability not to squeeze, prod or pick at anything will be my undoing!

I'm another one who has to sit on her hands not to do that.

You could have some iv antibiotics tonight. Some first thing and the go to your meeting and back to the hospital for the afternoon / evening lot tomorrow.

Or better still she could stay in hospital and focus on her health and getting well. I know just how long people wait for an autism assessment but OP needs to be in hospital and stay there unless told otherwise by the doctor. Time for dad to step up and go in her place.

Just up at a&e been put on iv antibiotics. Infected abcess and cellitius. 😫 redness grew twice the size from when I drew around. Thank you for telling me to go, saved my life more than likely!

Glad you got treated, hope you make your sons meeting, explain to the ward staff they may let you leave to go to it, especially if it’s in the same place

Jesus. No wonder the NHS is on its knees with this lot having a panic.
Looks like a boil. Give it a good squeeze and see what happens. Dab a dose of salt water on it and if it’s no better in a day or two then make an appointment.

That comment aged well....

Maybe read the updates before you post next time so you look less of a twit, eh?

Campanulaceae · 17/09/2026 23:09

If it was just a bit sore and looked like that I'd give it a good squeeze, but coupled with the pain, chills, and redness spreading then that's a 🚩 I'm glad you sought help. Cellulitis is no easy breeze!

I’m so sorry how are you? Can your ex take son to autism assessment?

Poor you op, I hope it clears up quickly, you should feel a lot less rough once the antibiotics start working.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 17/09/2026 23:46

@deadembarrased how are you, feeling any better?

LowAndSlow · 17/09/2026 23:50

Oh OP, I'm so glad you have been treated. I developed cellulitis almost 40 years ago. I stood up quickly when a member of staff called me to see to a delivery. My desk was beer to an old sash window, to look out and I stumbled, put my hand through the glass. I was told to drive myself to the hospital to get it seen to. I foolishly did and was taped up. Next day I was in agony and my hand and arm were incredibly swollen, looked like I'd got a tourniquet on my arm. Out of hours doctor told me to get to A & E pronto. I was on IV antibiotics and in hospital for 5 nights. Thankfully it healed and never came back.

The children's father can't do this.

The parental interview component of an autism assessment is to get the parent's eye view of the child's behaviour. This relies on the parent being interviewed being a substantiative caregiver to the child. It's clear from OP's description that Prince Charmless isn't a substantiative caregiver.

@oatmilkthesecond this also answers your suggestion.

Elboob · 18/09/2026 00:21

@deadembarrased I'm so glad you went to the Dr.
I hope you have a good night and the drugs work.
I was in hospital for a week with cellulitis, two different iv antibiotics. I was EXHAUSTED when I came out too.
So be prepared for a recovery time.

Do stop scaremongering with your ‘life experience’. I’ve had much worse boils, OP, you need pills and possibly draining. That’s all. But do it tonight.

I had a severe case of cellulitis 3 years ago which was much worse than it might have been if I hadn't ignored the first symptoms and had called NHS111 straightaway. It was the weekend and when I got to the GP on Monday I was sent straight to hospital where I was kept in for 16 days on double-strength IV antibiotics before they could put me on oral ABs and send me home. The OP can't diagnose herself which is why she needs to be seen by a doctor.

I had a similar experience with cellulitis. I woke up in the night shivering and with a bright red leg, DH rang an ambulance and I was admitted for IV antibiotics. The earlier you get treatment the better.

LittlePaintBox · 18/09/2026 00:26

Sorry to miss the important information that you're getting treatment, well done, OP. I hope the antibiotics kick in quickly and you feel loads better soon.

Lyntill · 18/09/2026 01:15

Forget the meeting, your health right now is far more important! Get a taxi and go to A&E or at least speak to someone on 111.

YourCleverPlumBee · 18/09/2026 01:19

Your health is much more important than the meeting. Sepsis can become dangerous very quickly so please seek help asap.

You could have some iv antibiotics tonight. Some first thing and the go to your meeting and back to the hospital for the afternoon / evening lot tomorrow.

You absolutely cannot stop the iv in the 1st 24 hrs with cellulitis like this.

DH got cellulitis and now has the joy of getting it really easily. The 1st time he was in hospital for 3 days, and then came home with an IV and was visited 3 times a day by a doctor or nurse (not in the UK, obviously).

We got so much information that time, I wish everyone knew.

Amongst it all was the necessity to be really really accurate with charting/taking the antibiotics if another time he was given tablets. The drop in coverage by even an hour or 2 can give the bug a chance to overrun the medicine which would be even worse.

He's had it three times since, once iv, twice tablets.

I understand the fear of missing the appt, but as a patent in similar circs, and currently flat on her back for 5 weeks, it is so important we look after our selves 1st.

You can get a letter from the hospital or send the interview people a redacted version of your discharge summary to show you were in hospital. And then, if they don't find you and new time soon, make some noise.

This is your opportunity to sit still for a couple of days, try and lean into it. You body is going to be using a LOT of energy to heal. Sleep or snooze as much as you can. See it as the enforced break it is.

WhatNextImScared · 18/09/2026 04:30

Thank god you did the right thing

@Confessionsofa40yrold i hope you reflect on what you wrote tonight. You’re a cleaner who pretended to be a medic to tell someone they’d be wasting NHS time if they went to hospital. It turns out if they didn’t go, they could have died. And her children would have been without a mother. You should be ashamed of yourself. Completely and utterly ashamed.

Seriously get over yourself. You have no idea of my history and if I’m a medic or not. I haven’t pretended anything. People come on here and ask opinions and I gave mine. This isn’t a&e and it isn’t the place to get a medical diagnosis. Just because you don’t agree with my opinion doesn’t give you the right to harp on about me like I’m some kind of monster. If you don’t like other people giving opinion then move on.

I know right @Confessionsofa40yrold should switch names with the OP as SHE is the one who should be @deadembarrased 😆

Ha! People come on here and ask opinions. I gave mine. I don’t quite see what I have to be embarrassed about.

Just as well OP didn’t listen to this plonker….

Yes because how insane to post about a medical emergency on mumsnet rather than actually go and get medical advice from a & e. Alls well that ends well.

@Confessionsofa40yrold you didn't tell OP to stop posting and go to a+e, remember? You told her to make a GP appointment if things didn't improve in a couple of days.

connie26 · 18/09/2026 06:08

I had something very similar near my groin. You need antibiotics asap and it might need draining. Call 111 and they'll arrange for you to be seen in minor injuries unit.

Well you should be ashamed of pretending to a medical qualification you clearly don't have and of giving dangerously incorrect medical advice that, if followed, could have killed the OP.

HTH

This is a situation where the opinions of randoms are dangerous. You don’t seem to care about that. Time for you to wind your neck in.

NotAtMyAge · 17/09/2026 22:42

Hospitals are not hotels. You can't just check out and check in again to suit your own convenience. If the OP is on iv antibiotics she will be kept in hospital until the course is finished and she is fit to go home. When I was in hospital for iv antibiotics for severe cellulitis I had an infusion every 6 hours day and night for 16 days.

Edited

You can do this. We let people come back for IVABS , you can sit in a chair in a day unit. We do it regularly it saves a bed, and OP has an important meeting. We also have a home iV service.
