Today I woke up feeling like shit. I can barely move my leg. It's agongy I cannot walk to see this monsteristy. There is a larged raised redness around it. I cannot get to the GP i have a meeting in the morning I cannot miss.
I feel really shit, keep getting cold as well. I thought infected hair folicie but it looks worse. Would show the large red patch around it but I'm embarrassed enough showing this. Please help 😭

Glad you're getting the care you need, OP, and that the meeting went ok.

It's alarming how quickly something that starts off as not much more than a zit can turn into something potentially serious.

Indeed. My FIL fell and cut his elbow on holiday. Got medical attention at the time and went to minor injuries when he got home. Still wasn't healing properly and he didn't feel well, went back for further medical attention, had developed sepsis and was in hospital for a week on antibiotics. Made a full recovery thank goodness. Good job he was seen and treated, but even with proper attention some cuts and minor scrapes can turn nasty.

Yes because how insane to post about a medical emergency on mumsnet rather than actually go and get medical advice from a & e. Alls well that ends well.

Not as insane as claiming you are a medic and giving advice that could have killed the OP. You told her it was no big deal, told her to give it a big squeeze and told her to put "a dab of salt water on it". Told her she'll be all better if she pops it. DANGEROUS advice. Squeezing it could have caused the infection to spread deeper.

Now you are all snippy because you got caught. You basically did the "If you can't dazzle 'em with your brains, baffle 'em with your bullshit". Except your bullshit advice could have caused irreparable harm.

If someone cannot give REAL helpful advice based on medical knowledge, they are better off either posting nothing or posting a bit of support.

All's well that ends well? Yeah, ONLY because she didn't listen to YOU after you falsely claimed you were a medic. Luckily, REAL people with medical knowledge stepped in.

Some people must spend hours on here checking out that kind of background.

Maybe. But others check when someone claims to be a professional and gives advice that could have well been deadly.

ANYONE with a modicum of medical knowledge, even a first aid course, would know you do not squeeze an abcess, especially when feeling very unwell, running a fever and having a large red area around the abcess.

I know many do squeeze boils and abcesses and don't get ill from it, but it still is not a wise idea, especially when already showing signs of illness.

Yes, I can see checking credentials makes sense.

I came to tell op to get seen immediately as I know someone who had something similar and it formed a scab, which had a hole where flesh had rotted away beneath. She got very, very ill.

I wasn't going to give that detail until OP was safely on antibiotics!

CrazyMidget · 18/09/2026 15:35

deadembarrased · 17/09/2026 20:41

Just up at a&e been put on iv antibiotics. Infected abcess and cellitius. 😫 redness grew twice the size from when I drew around. Thank you for telling me to go, saved my life more than likely!

Well, I hope your ex is feeling pretty bad now for saying that you didn't have an infection!

Get well soon!

Wow! I'm glad they recovered!

It was good to not tell the OP that until now. I'm just glad she went in.
I didn't start reading it until about 6 this a.m. (USA), so had just read through the OP's posts and then started read replies.
I was really shocked at the advice a couple of posters gave. I'm glad so many gave good advice on getting seen a-sap and even more glad the OP went to a&e.

Illnesses like cellulitis, mrsa, sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis, pancreatitis, etc. can all worsen so quickly and no one should feel like they should not seek immediate treatment when feeling so unwell with serious symptoms like the OP was having.

Surprised you aren't advocating putting Viakal on it, as per your advice on another thread when you said you'd been a cleaner for 20 years.

But hey cleaner/ medic, potato/potahto eh ?

I missed this! Viakal?! 😂

Absolutely.
The brass neck to come back swinging instead of saying ok, I was wrong and im glad you didnt listen to me.
Turning it round to the op being wrong for posting in the first place instead of getting help for the medical emergency that according to them in the first place, wasn't.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 18/09/2026 16:36

I must admit, I would have broken the skin in the hope relieving the pressure would help. And there would have been hot salt water involved beforehand…
But I’m glad she went in!

ThreeLocusts · 18/09/2026 17:17

OP I'm glad you're getting help and just want to say you're a star, keeping calm and keeping a sense of humour and managing to do the meeting and even still being gracious about your ex. Hats off.

Your kids are lucky to have you in their corner. I hope things get easier with the right diagnoses and help.

That feels kind of logical, but that's what the person I knew of did. She thought she had drained it, it formed a scab, but everything was still going on beneath.

The main giveaway - apart from the pain - was (wait for it) that it apparently stank.😱

LittlePaintBox · 18/09/2026 18:10

DDIY · 17/09/2026 20:11

Just interested - are you a doctor?

As a non-medic, the temperature would be a concern to me as an indicator of potential infection.

And as a non-medically-trained, past cellulitis patient, I know that shivering when you have a fever means you need urgent medical treatment.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 18/09/2026 21:48

Not sure if you have read the previous posts @LittlePaintBox but Confessionsofa40yearold seems to have been proven a liar - claims here to be medically trained but several claims elsewhere to be a cleaner for 20 years. Not absolutely an impossible combination but most unlikely when you consider the quality of their 'advice'.

Exactly. The rash, too.

As I say, not medically trained, but there are enough worrying indicators for me, so god knows why @Confessionsofa40yrold was so laise fair about OP's predicament.

That said, having sat through an inquiry about a poor guy who died from a SAH after 7 days, with 10+ medical professionals missing a number of red flags, it made me realise that even those who are supposed to know sometimes don't.

Just had my sons meeting they were so nice and let me switch the camera off. Said they were looking to diagnose autism but can't say offically yet but wanted me to know so I'm not worrying while in hostipal. Ive got a banging headache now and my leg is hurting a lot hope this is a sign the antibiotics are helping!

I'm so glad that you got help, made it to the meeting and they're pursuing a diagnosis for your son. I just want to let you know that you are doing an amazing job as a Mum and you need to make sure you look after yourself too 🌷

Piknik · 19/09/2026 10:12

I don't think we need to derail the thread anymore telling @Confessionsofa40yrold that her advice was shit and she's been caught out bullshitting.

OP - so glad that you have an ex that is friend enough to move in for a month. You might annoy each other but I also think it's a good thing that he will be around during the diagnoses and 'next steps' for DS. He won't be able to accuse you of being dramatic about that either and maybe the social workers (along with your doctors) will be able to give him a bit of a reality check.

UnderMirkwood · 19/09/2026 12:15

I hope you are feeling a bit better today Op. I'm glad your ex is stepping up to provide more support.

deadembarrased · 19/09/2026 15:24

Thanks all, still in hostipal. Had surgery last night on abscess and still hooked up to iv antibiotics. They said I should hopefully get home for Monday!

I’m so pleased. What an unexpected adventure! I had an unexpected trip to hospital for an IV drip. I enjoyed the rest greatly! Though not the threats of surgery if it didn’t improve. I felt very looked after.

You poor thing, hopefully they are looking after you well and it sounds like you really need the rest.

Studyunder · 19/09/2026 16:51

Thanks for keeping us updated. It’s a relief to hear your ok. Please remember leaving hospital doesn’t mean you’re recovered. It’ll take time and rest which I fully appreciate is easier said than done. YOU have to be your priority though, so you can be there for your children. Be kind to yourself, you’ve been through a lot xx

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 19/09/2026 18:44

Absolutely this.

Please don't underestimate the toll it takes on your body.

Sleep as much as you can so your body can heal. Also, eat, even if you don't want to. I didn't eat much when I was in with sepsis and I think it kept me in the hospital longer.

Is this true ? I thought shivering with a fever was completely normal ?! This happens to me and my kids everytime we get a temp…
