Who SHOULD have been Sirius?

Flamesparrow · 25/04/2007 08:11

I was torn with putting this in film or books, but went with books because that is where the description was...

Was discussing with friends over the weekend that Gary Oldman (as good as he is) just doesn't have the appeal that we felt Sirius had in the book... I can't quite work out who I would have preferred though.

Suggestions?

but hermione could be like the girl from worst witch, rather than a minature barbie doll!

humph, still peeved!

persephonesnape · 25/04/2007 12:46

hermoine is just meant to be this side of the line of plain - it's meant to give hope to young girls that they will blossom in their mid-teens and that theres nothing wrong in being smart rather than pretty - she's a bit dishevelled in the first three/four because she's not all that concerned with her appearence.

i like hermoine. i was a know-it-all swot at school as well.

singingmum · 25/04/2007 12:50

When Hermione turns up at the yule ball she's supposed to shock everone with the fact that she's not a plain jane but a stunner.I think the screen Hermione pulls it off very well.
As for the gasping thats surely because she's always rushing to answer first. My son does this as he rushes to say everything

BandofMothers · 25/04/2007 12:51

When I first read the HP books they had pictures in and I picture the characters like that. It must be hard to cast a film.
Do agree Hermione a bit annoying, but think she's good in the first one when she tells Ron he has dirt on his nose. V good attitude. Just how I picture her.

Steward · 25/04/2007 13:59

I preferred Richard Harris as Dumbledore No one else could be Snape, only Alan Rickman can do that job. Think Gary Oldman is ok but cannot think who else could do it other then maybe Timothy Dalton. Actor who played Lupin is good.

BandofMothers · 25/04/2007 14:01

I must say that I did think Thewlis(??) did a great job of Lupin btw. But was surprised they chose him. I did picture Lupin as Goodlooking when I read the books.

persephonesnape · 25/04/2007 14:23

difficult if Lupin is good looking as well, because then all of the marauders would irresistable! (except peter..) When i was reading the books, I saw Lupin as being kind of sunken eyed and peely wally - looking a bit under the weather for much of the time.

must re-read OOTP before the film comes out. then i'll need to re read six before seven.

can't wait to see Tonks. hope they change her hair well.

Dimpled · 25/04/2007 18:34

perse - me and ds are on some sort of HP quest to get him up to speed so he can anticipate the last book. We have a schedule and a timetable. Chapter a night and we finish HBP two weeks before DH comes out.

A chapter a night sounds fine and worked for the first three books but now we are on OOTP a chapter can take 3mins and if I have been out the night before so need to catch up that is an hours reading!

Dimpled · 25/04/2007 18:34

30mins not 3!!!

weepootleflump · 25/04/2007 18:42

I always pictured Sirius as Ian Brown from The Stone Roses

Blandmum · 25/04/2007 18:44

I have a serious thing for Luceous Malfoy.

He could give me a taste of his Engorgio any time he wanted

I stil find Emma Watson quite wooden as Hermoine. where as DR and RG seemed to have grown in to thier roles.

Also her attitude towards always being know as 'that girl in harry Potter' is a bit off. DR's attitude is much better.

DumbledoresGirl · 25/04/2007 19:14

MB! You are a happily married woman!

Does he ever play nice roles though? I only ever see Jason Isaacs playing the meanest of mean roles which is a bit offputting.

BTW, no-one has commented on the role of He Who Must Not Be Named - oh no, I am DG, I can say his name: Voldemort. ANy ideas who could play him if not Whatever his name is? Fiennes chappy.

janeite · 25/04/2007 19:15

I like Emma Watson as Hermione a lot, although I don't feel that she's at all as described initially, far too pretty.

Ken - thought he made a great Lockheart, though I don't usually like him.

Snape - drooooooooooooooooool.

Sirius - I like the madness in him but I still feel he should be better looking. Like the suggestion of that guy who played Rochester. Johnny Depp might have done it well too, although I know he's not English.

Lupin I felt needed to be a bit less "stiff-upper-English" and a bit more erm.... wolfish! Can't think who though.

RubberDuck · 25/04/2007 20:04

Oh I quite like Voldemort. I was a bit taken aback at first, because he wasn't how I envisioned him at all, but somehow Fiennes just works... think he fits the part brilliantly.

MrsWho · 25/04/2007 20:43

Oldman as Sirius works for me , but think they should have made more of his character in the film (especially GOF) he is supposed to be in OOTP more though.
It was Snuffles I had the problem with the dog in the film is not bear like its too smooth , the dog should be bigger and fluffier (or at least straggly to match Sirius) there are some dogs near me that look exactly how I picture but have no idea of the breed to google a picture.

Nikki76 · 25/04/2007 20:45

I wanted Kevin Kline as Sirius Black and Brian Blessed as Hagrid!

mamijacacalys · 25/04/2007 21:09

Agree with the consensus re Snape. (Alan Rickman is a general god anyway and should have a knighthood or something, perhaps he's still a bit too young for a K?!)

Must also vote emphatically for Robbie as Hagrid - superb.

Also spot on casting IMHO, FWIW:
Julie Walters, natch
Emma Thompson, natch
Ken as Lockheart, natch
The Fast Show guy as Mr Weasley
Zoe Wannamaker as the Quidditch teacher, Emma Thompson, natch
Richard Harris (thought he was brilliant in the Wild Geese and still cry at the end of that film although the plot is generally rubbish!) Agree that Gambon is good (natch) but not quite. I don't think even McKellern could really do it for me after the standard set by RH.
The snivelly guy who plays the caretaker.
Think Oldman as Black is fine.
The kids are great, but Hermione is the weakest casting whereas Ron is the best actor.

MrsWho · 25/04/2007 21:26

Snuffles

How sad am I I just phoned my Mam to aske her the breed of dog so I could google it to put on here Though it has distratced me briefly from my Dalek time line

I meant dark as in looks ratehr than acting CE is excellent actor.
