Who SHOULD have been Sirius?

I was torn with putting this in film or books, but went with books because that is where the description was...

Was discussing with friends over the weekend that Gary Oldman (as good as he is) just doesn't have the appeal that we felt Sirius had in the book... I can't quite work out who I would have preferred though.

Suggestions?

Ooh I fancy Ken too.

Toby Stephens would be excellent as Sirius I have to admit.

IMO Ian McKellen should have been Dumbledore from the begining.

Absolutely WB.

October, who is that man? And you think they are better looking than Ken? Ken was great at the smarminess Lockhart specialised in.

"They guy was pale and disheveled. Not big and burly."

He was pale, disheveled and sunken - but I always got the impression in his prime he was a strong presence and big man - that's why it was more shocking how he'd suffered in Azkhaban (yes, I know I can't spell that without looking it up).

Maybe Brian Blessed after a lot of crash dieting

DumbledoresGirl · 25/04/2007 09:32

He looks a bit gaunt and haunted there - not how Lockhart should be.

No no, Brian Blessed is all booming and bafoonish, not wiry and dark and brooding

DumbledoresGirl · 25/04/2007 09:34

If Brian Blessed went anywhere near Harry Potter, it would have to be as Fudge, but Robert Hardy does a perfect job of that part himself.

WelshBoris · 25/04/2007 09:34

We all agree with Robbie Coltrane though?

As Hargad/Hagrid?

RubberDuck · 25/04/2007 09:37

That's just it ... I don't see Sirius as wiry at all... that's why Oldman felt so wrong to me.

Have to confess that originally I thought Brian would have made a good Hagrid - but Hagrid has grown on me as is, and would hate to change him now.

Lockheart was brilliant, Trelawny terrible - couldn't see why ANYONE took her seriously from the films yet she had her followers in the books. Love the actors for Harry, Hermione and Ron. Snape is superb - can't read the books without seeing Alan Rickman now. Ron's mum and dad are perfect.

Lupin - almost cried when I saw Lupin, he was my favourite character in the books and he was just so ... insipid... in the films.

saltire · 25/04/2007 09:42

I'm not sure about Gary Oldman as Sirius, but like Flame, I'm not sure who I would have chosen.

saltire · 25/04/2007 09:45

I think helena Bonahm Carter will be great as Bellatrix, and if they do include the role of Narcissa in the films (which they should when they make half-Blood Prince)then it should be Hermione Norris (cold feet) who plays her.
the problem I hav eis that i read the first 2 books after the films came out, so i had already picture most of the characters in ym head. When i read OoTP book I alwyas inviasged Imelda Staunton as Umbridge, and now she has been cast as her

Sunyshineymummy · 25/04/2007 09:47

I always thought Sirius was supposed to be really good looking and charismatic when youger, but become scrawny and deranged while in Azkaban, so for me Oldman wasn't right. Not sure who would be better though. I love Ken B as Lockheart, he's one of my fave actors anyway (seen him on stage and he's amazing). Boco - that series with Emma Thompson was called Fortunes of War and it was fab. I'm having concerns about who they're going to cast as Dolores Umbridge as surely that should be Miriam Margoles but she's already in it as Sprout.

persephonesnape · 25/04/2007 09:52

Hermoine Norris would be ok... i think of narcissa as being very very angular - like tilda swinton in narnia. she has to be cold and skinny and evil.

i bet gywneth paltrow would kill for the role, but they do seem to only cast british actors/

Boco · 25/04/2007 09:52

SSM thank you - that's it! It was great wasn't it, one of my first big love crushes.

Sunyshineymummy · 25/04/2007 09:59

Saltire - crossed posts. I suppose Imelda Staunton is a good option for Umbridge. She's clearly one of the most evil characters ever. Boco - FoW was one of those series I keep hoping to find repeated on UK Gold or something, but it never is. It really was good and launched both Ken and Emma's careers.

DumbledoresGirl · 25/04/2007 10:03

Nah, I remember seeing Ken B in stuff long before Fortunes of War! He played an epileptic once ....... can't remember the name of that.

Hopeitwontbebig · 25/04/2007 10:05

Oooh oooh I think the chap who played Aragorn in LOTR would have been fab as Sirius he's gorgous!!!

Have to admit, I am a big Oldman fan, but he just didn't seem to fit the character I'd imagined when reading the book. The Prisoner of Azkaban was my fave HP book and I especially liked Sirius' character. I don't think enough focus was put on his character in the film...

DumbledoresGirl · 25/04/2007 10:08

Please someone explain the attraction of Sirius (the book character, not the film actor) because I just don't get it.

Apart from Dumbledore, I too liked Lupin in the books - I see him as a gentle man, kind, but hugely tragic. He will get his reward one day I feel.
