These threads are for those who’d like to lose weight and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost just around 45lbs. After having been on the wrong side of 12st The last time I weighed I was hovering around 9st 2lbs. I would like to get back into the 8’s 🤞

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

New members … Give it a go; it’s never too late! Come summer you’ll be pleased you did 😊

Beloved long timers it would be great for you to keep going❤️

TealSloth · 30/04/2025 12:12

Thankyou for the thread. @TheRealHousewife am hoping to see some results this month for myself.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/04/2025 12:26

Checking in. Thank you OP for the lovely new thread ☀️

OK here, about to sit down to a (not very healthy!) lunch as a first meal of the day. Then a bit of gardening.

I’m down to 76kg (from 87kg at the beginning of February). Initial goal is 75kg and then let’s see.

HollyGolightly4 · 30/04/2025 12:48

Month two let's go!

LegoTherapy · 30/04/2025 12:54

Thanks . I hope the holiday is relaxing and that you are feeling better soon and have some answers.

pretty pissed off at myself for gaining so far this year but I’m still under what was my original goal weight of 9st 3lb. Aiming for 8st 7lb again.
I’ve just worked out the calories in my homemade bread and am stunned by how many there are. It’s good bread though and usually keeps me full until lunch. No nasty chemicals in it but I’ll try to slice it more thinly.
I hope May is a great month for everyone. I work in kg as find this better to cope with mentally but do convert to stones and pounds sometimes. I’ve lost 0.8kg this week so far which is over 3 packs of Kerrygold butter for those who like the butter analogy 😃 Yesterday saw my step count hit over 32,000 which helps nullify the bread.

Let’s do this!!

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 30/04/2025 12:58

I’ll join in!

I’m fatter than a fat pig I’m in need of some assistance to trim my waistline a little.

Stats - 105kg (maybe 16 and a half stone???)
5’ 5”
vegetarian
teetotal
sugar lover
not very active

I have a few ideas - give up butter unless using it for cooking (this will be really difficult for me), eat three proper meals and no snacking, watch portion sizes, no sugar in drinks, one day of fasting per week, plenty of water, daily heart pumping exercise, twice weekly yoga. Does that sound okay? Anything else I can do? I’m unwilling to calorie count as I home cook 95% of the time and wouldn’t know where to begin to work out calories. When I make a recipe I’ll change it according to what I’ve got in, it won’t be exactly the same every time.

What do you think?

And what can I expect to lose by the end of May?

Most importantly, can you beat me with a broomstick if I don’t stick to this? Thank you.

@socks1107 & @TealSloth Thank you 🥰❤️

Welcome @ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself Hahahaha 😅 Your terminology made me proper chuckle 🤭 I’m sure you’re not! Whatever stage any of us are at we are still lovely and worthwhile human beings ❤️. I think the plan you’ve outlined for yourself is sensible. In fact it’s very good! That said, In regards to butter, perhaps just have less. Life’s too short for such a sacrifice 😜 In regards to predicting loss, it’s tough due to not knowing what your diet was like before your overhaul. We all lose at different rates but generally the more we have to lose, the more we tend to lose. This then tapers off as we progress. Generally if you’ve created a 500 calorie daily deficit you could expect to lose 2lbs + per week on average. It’s not all about calories though. It’s about keeping blood sugar balanced and reducing insulin spikes. Not snacking, reducing sugars & anlcohol and a fasting day a week will really help you. Good luck 🤞

@TheRealHousewife

In regards to butter, perhaps just have less

I wish I could, but I have massive problems with cutting down and I find it much easier to cut it out. When I stopped smoking (decades ago) I just……stopped. No cutting down at all. I wouldn’t have been able to do it any other way. So having less butter would quickly morph into ‘having less’ which would be exactly the same in reality.

I have some Vitalite (or similar?) so I’ll have that in sandwiches, and try to use up some of my cereals for breakfast instead of toast dripping (literally) in butter and honey.

You can call me Ms Cold Turkey 🦃.

😁

I sometimes get a sense that I’m flagging really quickly and I’ve got to eat now right now before I faint gimme food NOW. Is this a blood sugar/insulin thing do you think?

I sometimes get a sense that I’m flagging really quickly and I’ve got to eat now right now before I faint gimme food NOW. Is this a blood sugar/insulin thing do you think?

Most definitely. What's happening is the sugar is absorbed into your bloodstream as soon as you eat sugary/carby foods. To bring down this instant surge in blood sugar, your body secretes high levels of insulin. The insulin does its job to decrease your blood sugar, but pretty soon you feel hungry again.

I try to have a decent amount of protein, fibre and healthy fats at each meal which aids in keeping satisfied and blood sugar balanced.

If you like reading (or audio books) Dr Jason Fung & Dr Roy Taylor (amongst others) have written many books about preventing or reversing diabetes. Insulin & high blood sugars sabotage weight loss. I myself have been deemed ‘insulin resistant’ and just a few notches down from pre-diabetes. A while back I wore a blood sugar monitor and identified all the foods which spiked my insulin beyond normal parameters. Very enlightening.

Balancing blood sugars and avoiding diabetes type 2 is one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself. High blood sugars are implicit in developing heart disease, high blood pressure, blood cholesterol levels and dementia type disease (aka type 3 diabetes) amongst other things. The body is one hell of a chemistry lab!

@ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself some would have you think that but I’m not sure of the evidence base. I’m an all or nothing person too.
Personally, I try not to eat much in the way of ultra processed foods because they are full of chemicals and make me feel
rubbish. They negatively affect my 10 year old who likely has ADHD. Having looked at what’s in vitalite I’d stick to the butter which is usually just cream and salt. Don’t deprive yourself of something you enjoy.

LegoTherapy · 30/04/2025 14:45

Cross-posted there. I’ll read up on the evidence base. As far as I know, if you are insulin resistant then this is the case but if your blood glucose-insulin response is operating normally then there should be balance. I’ve not found any difference personally in eating more protein instead of carbs. My diet is mainly carbs and always has been and my blood sugars are always normal.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/04/2025 15:07

Interestingly there was something in the Guardian just today about the benefits of replacing butter with olive oil when cooking etx. May be worth a read.

Pastelrainbow · 30/04/2025 15:31

I’ll join in. I have been slowly losing weight since the beginning of January and have enjoyed reading the previous monthly threads on here!

So far this year I have lost 24lbs which I am really happy about. I have been losing around 1.5lbs a week on average which is nice and steady. I have also moved from an overweight BMI into the healthy range :-)

Height 5ft 9
SW 13st 3
CW 11st 7
TW 11st (or high 10s even better!)

Main changes are upping my walking to at least 10k steps a day (I have a sedentary job so this is a change!) and generally reducing calories. I have found that I don’t need to eat first thing in the morning so start my day with a cuppa and then usually eat my first meal at lunch. I’m also trying to reduce snacking but not being crazy strict.

I would love to get to my target by end of July in time for my holidays so aiming for a steady 3-4lbs throughout May.

frostedshreddie · 30/04/2025 18:17

Hello please can I join for May?
I am 10 st 7lb and would like to be under 9st ideally.
I have a wedding to go to in July, would love to be in better shape for then and have more confidence wearing a nice dress.

I have been calorie counting, aiming for 10K on exercise bike everyday and drinking lots of water.
I weigh daily.

LemonDrizzle23 · 30/04/2025 19:08

Signing in for May 👋

April was tricky. Still very much recovering from the death of my lovely DM, plus holiday, plus Easter…. Didn’t do good things to diet and exercise!

Going into May with a solid loss this week, and a plan in place moving forward.

LegoTherapy · 30/04/2025 19:24

@LemonDrizzle23oh no, I’m so sorry about your lovely mum. Sending much love and hoping that you can take care of yourself a little more this month x

NothingTraLaLa · 30/04/2025 19:56

Sterling work on the new thread as always @TheRealHousewife - thank you, and I hope the holiday does you a world of good 💐

HazelNotHungryLC · 30/04/2025 20:56

I would love to join, if you'll have me!

As my username suggests, I usually eat low carb and am not hungry. However, things have slipped, I'm eating more sugar than I should and I'm paying for it!
I would love to be back to my "normal" eating. I'm bloated, skin not so great and just getting over a cold (my immune system is compromised when I eat more carbs than I should).

Ideally I need to lose 13lbs to get to my goal weight, but more importantly I need to change my frame of mind, and accountability will help me with that.
I weigh daily so I can keep track of where I'm at.
I plan on logging my food on mfp as I know that works. I have reached my goal weight before, but I self sabotage and I haven't figured out why 😫

SW: 180lbs (in 2018)
CW: 168lbs
GW: 155lbs

I have a spin bike at home (followed by excuses to not use it, even though I love it!)
I also do yoga at home (see above re excuses). I do walk on my breaks at work so try to keep my steps up, which have been hard the last couple of days with not feeling good.
I'm now 41, and it's definitely harder to lose now I'm a little older than before 😢

QueenMabby · 30/04/2025 22:15

thanks for the new thread. As I said in the last one, aiming for a 4lb loss in May. Bring it on!

LightandAiry · 30/04/2025 22:32

Hi I would like to join.

Walked over 15,000 steps last 2 days and trying to eat a very healthy diet. I have been pre-diabetic for around 4 years, but on the low side of pre-diabetic and take blood pressure meds. I think these things can be solved after losing about 1.5 to 2 stone.

So far I've left at 4lb have another 28lb to go.

I do yoga twice or three times per week too. I'm trying and it will be good to chat 😊

Fellsbells · 01/05/2025 06:36

Thank you for the new thread @TheRealHousewife

I lost 20lbs last year, but I’ve slowly put a lot of it back on since then. I’m tracking on MFP. Running three times a week, and trying to fit in some weighted exercises too. I’ve got a lot of incentives to look and feel better this month so I’ve got high hopes.

CW 10st 1lb
GW 9st 4lb

I’m slightly up on yesterday, even though I was in a calorie deficit 🤷‍♀️

Espresso25 · 01/05/2025 06:41

Can I join? My time hop showed my weight from two years ago - I’d have to chop my legs off to get that now!

Love working out and do so 5x a week but can never stick to the nutrition end of things.

SW: 11st 5.4
GW: 9st 5lb

LegoTherapy · 01/05/2025 06:59

Happy May to you all! Im
amnoyed to be 0.2kg up from yesterday but I’m guessing the 35 miles or so I’ve walked this week so far has caused a little water retention in my muscles. My quads have been complaining at the increase in tackling the big hill. I did have more salt yesterday though so I’ll cut that out today.
Have a great day everyone!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 01/05/2025 07:02

Morning! Goal today: lots of water as it’s so hot.
