Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

Last weeks’ heatwave seems like a distant memory. Monsoon rains, thunder & lightning and hailstones the size of gobstoppers down here in the South.

Yddraigoldragon · 02/06/2026 17:18

Warnings today about El Niño, how might this impact the UK?

FennelGingerJasmineOrMint ~ we had a thunderstorm as well this afternoon, it didn't last that long and not that much in the way of rain but some good lightning and rumbles of thunder.

Yep, also in the south, we've had it all today!

It bucketed down here, big heavy drops then hail then more rain,

Thanks @GloriaSmud I've been waiting for this ☀️

More of the same for the rest of the week ~ unsettled and thundery showers at times (I'm just glad of any rain at the moment for watering the garden/allotment and filling the water butts/reservoirs!)

At the moment, looking towards the end of next week, it looks like things warm up again but that's looking way ahead....

Yesterday's thoughts from Netweather...

Welcome rain for gardeners as showers spread across Britain through the week

Warm air lingers for the first half of this week until a cooler, fresher change before the weekend. Atlantic low pressures bring welcome rain and heavy, sometimes thundery, showers.

Thanks for the new thread @GloriaSmudfingers crossed for a beautiful summer ☀️

GloriaSmud · 03/06/2026 07:27

@SoMentallyDrained ~ I hope for that too Smile ~ a mix of some warmth and sunshine (but not too hot!) for outdoor events and rain (to keep the gardeners happy!) I think that would be my ideal summer.

Glad we finally had rain in the south yesterday. Sorry for my seedlings that now have to survive the slugs though.

I agree, shall we order sunny warm daytimes and rain overnight?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/06/2026 09:25

Thunderstorm (heavy) yesterday with hail and heavy rain. Not on weather apps.

Yes ~ that would be wonderful ~ hopefully everyone would be happy with a summer like that!

Looks like the week ahead is going to be more of what we have now ~ unsettled. Looking ahead to next weekend and after that, it dries up a little and gets a bit warmer but it still looks like the mix of sunshine and showers continues.

Oh whoops I always miss it when we change seasons and a new thread starts! Thought the other one was a bit quiet…!

I am worried about June being a complete wash out!

GloriaSmud · 06/06/2026 18:32

Delatron ~ Smile especially as the weather hasn't really changed at the cross-over point into summer! It's a case of 'more of the same' for the next week and then from next weekend, slightly warmer and drier but still sunshine and showers.

OP posts:
Delatron · 06/06/2026 19:36

Thanks @GloriaSmud I shall try and make the most of of the sunshine between the showers!

Delatron · 07/06/2026 12:47

Think it looks a bit more promising now from next weekend. Fingers crossed!

GloriaSmud · 07/06/2026 14:58

@Delatron ~ it's looking that way. From next weekend, GFS has most of the country being pleasantly warm and almost no rain. The metoffice long-range forecast for the next few weeks though mentions settled conditions but also seems to think there'll be more in the way of showers/longer spells of rain. So we'll see.....I'm just going to enjoy the mixture of sunshine and showers ~ it seems to keep everyone happy!

We definitely need the showers too @GloriaSmud ! Thanks for the update. A bit warmer than this, more sunshine and the odd shower would be fine!

GloriaSmud · 08/06/2026 06:38

So unsettled this week for most of us but by the weekend summer is back, with temperatures around 25C for the south, low 20s for the for the north/Scotland/Wales. That carries on into next week and it gets warmer, with temperatures between 24-27C, might get a 30C in London/the SE by Tuesday/Wednesday. It looks at the moment, like temperatures ease back after that but as always, next week is a long way ahead in forecasting land!....

Delatron · 08/06/2026 07:31

Ooh thanks @GloriaSmud I noticed that the forecast had improved overnight. I’m hoping for high twenties max so I can actually be outside in it this time.

GloriaSmud · 08/06/2026 07:47

@Delatron ~ it's looking good for doing that!

That’s good. It’s raining here (light) possible thunderstorms at 2pm.
