Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

GloriaSmud · 02/06/2026 06:27

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

@GloriaSmud thank you

Couple of amateur forecasters have said My area will hit 26 by tomorrow. I can believe it.

I'll have to ring the people who run the workspace on the dot at 9 o'clock.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/06/2026 13:36

Xcweather is now showing 37 for Monday

WTF

WTF

What is xc weather and where are they predicting?

EmeraldRoulette · 15/06/2026 13:41

xcweather website

They're saying it for Essex. And also London, I just checked.

I did feel that the last heat wave was quite predictable, but nobody predicted it until about two days before, in terms of news anyway

It was kind of buried on the weather websites. I just kept thinking it must be wrong because no one else was saying it.

Then again, I'm obviously living in a boiling new build so kind of obsessed with it.

Edited

I've just checked two other websites ventusky and BBC, London. They're putting it in the 20s. However, Spain is bloody hot. Off to check met office. We've got rain until 26th

EmeraldRoulette · 15/06/2026 13:56

My non-expert opinion is that this week will be hot and that next week will probably get hotter

These newfangled weather forecast are not good for planning. 10 days used to be pretty accurate.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/06/2026 21:17

Seeing increased talk about this on social media from amateur forecasters.

justasking111 · 15/06/2026 21:23

Well everyone says we're getting a cloudy weekend. Not too hot but not raining either. I'll take that.

GloriaSmud · 16/06/2026 07:05

EmeraldRoulette has got it about right with what the next 10 days might have in store for us ~ the GFS is showing at the moment for the South/SE, a hot weekend (temperatures edging towards 30C), Monday though is showing 35C, then a few 'cooler' days follow (more around the 25C mark.)

The rest of the country sees temperatures mid to high 20s for the next week and for those wanting to escape the heat, Scotland is the place to go, they see temperatures in the 15-20C range.

So from today, temperatures are on the up and by the end of next week/weekend, we could see the whole country experiencing temperatures of 25+ and the south hitting 35C+. There's not a lot showing in the way of rain for the next 10 days either so looks like we're in for a dry spell as well.

Yesterday's thoughts from Netweather on the next few days...

European heat edges into southern England later this week, pushing temperatures over 30C

Hot air from Europe is set to creep into southeastern Britain later this week, with temperatures rising into the low 30sC with strong June sunshine. Rain at times for Northern Ireland and Scotland but warm away from far northwest.

It's going to be a scorcher for some.

Delatron · 18/06/2026 15:23

I’m googling air con units now!

Sallycinnamum · 18/06/2026 16:06

I've caved and bought a portable air conditioner for our loft room, which is stifling during a heatwave.

DH thinks its a waste of money but we shall see. Doubt he'll be saying that soon!

gingercat02 · 18/06/2026 17:38

We have a had a warm decent day. Its now pouring with rain 😭

Delatron · 18/06/2026 19:09

I have a unit arriving tomorrow! This looks like another prolonged hot spell in the south and I struggled to sleep last time.

DH will be annoyed. I broke the last one and didn’t sort it even though it was in warranty! But I’d rather he was cross than me not being able to sleep!

EmeraldRoulette · 18/06/2026 20:08

@GloriaSmud I did not want to be right! The flat will be boiling

GloriaSmud · 18/06/2026 20:28

@EmeraldRoulette ~ I know ~ as I was looking at some of the temperatures on the GFS I was thinking, 'Emerald will not like these ~ her flat is going to be like an oven.' Sad

EmeraldRoulette · 18/06/2026 20:40

@GloriaSmud thank you for thinking of me!

I'm not going to be there for the start of it, and I'm quite tempted to stay away until the end of it! 😂 but that won't be possible because it's going on for a while, it looks like.

It's going to be humidity and lack of air that's a bigger problem I think, there was no air yesterday

GloriaSmud · 18/06/2026 21:38

@EmeraldRoulette ~ I think all we can do is hope the GFS/other weather models are overdoing it, as happened last weekend, when they all started off forecasting very high temperatures and then it turned out to be not as hot as first predicted <grasps at straws once again!>

There's nothing else you can do.

And looking at the GFS that's just rolling out ~ I'm wondering whether that might be extended to cover Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as well for the same areas. It seems to think the same sort of temperatures apply to later next week as well....

Yes, that's what I've been thinking for a few days

It looks like it's just going to be boiling hot all week and possibly not cool down until Tuesday 30th if that.
