Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

Oh dear !
I'm supposed to be seeing an event in a tent on Thurs it will be later on though....

Poor dd has her prom next week as well

Notonthestairs · 21/06/2026 12:37

Proms, school trips, end of year award ceremonies & sports days this week. 😬

justasking111 · 21/06/2026 15:27

I've just had lunch in a deep valley in a beer garden with a tree canopy for shade alongside a rushing stream. It was lovely. I'm now home and it's 🥵. DH has taken son and grandkids out in the boat a mile or more offshore they'll be very comfortable.

EmeraldRoulette · 21/06/2026 19:33

I've extended my trip, so I'll be back in Essex on Thursday

When it looks like it will be 34 or 38 depending on which forecast you look at.

GloriaSmud · 22/06/2026 06:14

Probably a good move there, EmeraldRoulette.
I think for the next week or so, it's a case of 'adjusting lifestyle to suit the conditions,' (and include drinking lots, applying suncream and trying to stay in the shade during the hottest hours of the day.)

I'm not looking forward to this 🥵

Am fortunately retired, so don't have to anywhere. Cancer treatment seems to have worsened the way I deal with heat (which wasn't great before!). I do have an appointment on Thursday afternoon in central London, but all of the public transport I'd be taking won't be air conditioned, and there's a a bit of walking, too, so I'm going to rearrange it.

That's a wise move, BatshitCrazyWoman ~ it's going to be an uncomfortable week for those that don't like/find the heat difficult to cope with.

DIL bought an Aircon unit from Screwfix good reviews she said £175. It's for the children their rooms are at the back of the house which gets afternoon and evening sun. She'll put them in together.

Piggywaspushed · 22/06/2026 08:15

We have one we bought over 20 years ago which is still going. It is far more powerful than the two we bought within the last 5 years (I imagine it's not awfully environmental). When it eventually bites the dust, I will be distraught!

Yddraigoldragon · 22/06/2026 17:40

Anyone in Bristol? Looks wild! And heading to S Wales I think!

EmeraldRoulette · 22/06/2026 18:00

To add to My confusion

I'm travelling down from the north back to Essex on Thursday

I've had an email from LNER saying to consider moving travel to Friday if possible but also saying that they will honour ticket changes for those of us booked on Thursday

I've already extended my holiday, so I really cannot stretch to another night in the hotel on Thursday and I doubt they'd have room for me anyway

I know it's the usual risk of the rails buckling in heat. So, what to do? I've only just got here. I was somewhere else before.

I do actually want to get home on Thursday

they've specifically said to travel before midday. I'm leaving about nine-ish and should be back in about two-ish.

Near Cardiff - we got threatening grey from about 4 and then rain from 5 with lots of ominous rumbling. Checked the lightning app and could see Somerset getting hammered. Seemed to move East past us. It rained for an hour or so quite heavily but has now gone back to grey and a bit muggy.

Yddraigoldragon · 22/06/2026 20:42

Also near Cardiff, and yes for a while it looked promising! When I posted over the bridge was getting a proper hammering.

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/06/2026 20:51

@Yddraigoldragon must have been pretty dramatic but couldn’t see anything. Hope it means tonight might be slightly cooler…

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/06/2026 21:07

Whole thread here on the thunderstorm - sounds serious, some flooding, two house fires caused by lightning

Is the met office likely to extend the weather warning to cover Friday too do we think? I don’t really understand why it isn’t when their forecast shows Friday just as hot as Wednesday and Thursday in a lot of places.

Yes I noticed that too. In fact it’s looking to be the hottest day so far at 35C (in the North).

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2026 11:07

I've had a notification from the Met Office for an amber warning for Friday (currently in red in my county). It's going to be hotter here on Friday than today.

I’ve just seen they’ve put amber warning for here on Friday too now. Not sure why it’s not still red really given, like you, it’s actually forecast hotter than today!

They've given thunder storms as another guess tomorrow

justasking111 · 24/06/2026 13:33

We started today with a thick mist. Much cooler so I cracked on with the cleaning in my night dress. Got loads done in two hours. The sun has appeared but there's a breeze. It's very comfortable. Tomorrow it's thunder and ⚡⚡⚡heavy rain showers predicted.

Delatron · 24/06/2026 14:00

So unbearable in the south. My house is like an oven. Apart from my bedroom where the air con is taking the edge off.

nannynick · 24/06/2026 15:21

Even portable aircon is only helping a bit. 25 degrees inside, 37 outside.
