Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

It's been sticky here the last few evenings, but in the day so windy. We've had heavy rain showers the last two days, absolute deluges.

We're not forecast more than 23c unlike the south and east. It's still been too hot for the duvet the last couple of nights.

Remember last year's thunderstorms. I think Dover was the best one to view. Someone on here announced it so I found a webcam. It lasted for ages.

Woah look at Belgium.

Wow ~ it looks like Belgium really caught it!
That's the only thing that can be said about the heat in the next week ~ it might spark off a few thundery downpours/thunderstorms.

Although the weather was lovely here yesterday, it was quite gusty and Leicester's having its first balloon festival this weekend, so the gusty winds put a stop to the balloon launches around 7-7.30pm. Should be lighter winds today and tomorrow so hopefully ok for this evening/tomorrow evening!

Yesterday was sunny during the early afternoon, but always with some cloud bubbling up, and by early evening it was very grey and overcast, almost eerily so. Hard to believe it was June when there was only a half light at 6pm. I expected thunder but there was none. This morning it’s rained overnight and it’s reasonably fresh and cool so far. Expecting it to warm up steadily today.

We're at Wembley next weekend. Getting water during the gig and for the way home is going to be such a faff. I understand security reasons for strict bag policies but making it hard to take drink and snacks makes gigs a pain in the backside to be honest.

justasking111 · 20/06/2026 09:26

Luckily it may be cooler for Wembley.

I'm glad Wimbledon isn't this coming week.

EmeraldRoulette · 20/06/2026 10:47

I'm coming up to needing to make a decision about this

I'm away at the moment and due to come back on Tuesday - crap timing

I can stay away until the end of the week. I can't say I want to, but I can.

If it's really going be that bad, and for days on end perhaps I should stay away.

I suppose tomorrow I will know whether I really really want to go home (I generally do). I don't have any work next week though. And if I'm just going to be stuck in the flat because it's too hot to do anything outside... can't decide.

looking at my local forecast the temps will not drop off after Tues but continue around 33/34 until Saturday.
any idea why the weather warnings don’t continue beyond end of Tues?

Wondering if my kids sports day will be postponed or cancelled on Thurs.

secondary schools don’t seem to care as much about this as primary schools!

I’m on the South West coast, Lyme Bay to be precise, and we have been under a sea fret/haar/fog for the last week. This photo is from yesterday and the cloud has simply hung around on the high ground with very few breaks. If you look carefully you can see the white line of fog/cloud all along the horizon on the edges of the bay.

We finally caught a break on the beach yesterday and made the most of the sunshine, but walking home inland we were soon back in the damp cloud/fog! We spoke to a number of visitors who were very disappointed to find they were camping/caravanning in a big cool damp cloud having driven down here in sunshine.

It has finally eased around lunchtime today and the temperature has soared from the mid-teens to the mid-twenties. Just shows that in the UK we have so many micro-climates that blanket weather forecasts are often very inaccurate!

Looks glorious in the photo but as soon as we rounded the cliff on the right we lost the sunshine again.

From what's written here, it looks like the metoffice doesn't think warnings are necessary beyond Tuesday, although it notes that the heat will hold on in the south and east so maybe warnings could get extended closer to mid-week, when things are a bit more certain...

Thanks @GloriaSmud
Will keep an eye on the warnings from
Monday / Tuesday

@TheNoWord . We're on the coast. Weirdly we haven't had a sea fret yet this year. I hate the dank cold mist. Bbrrr

PaperTyger · 20/06/2026 20:50

@EmeraldRoulette it's late July so things msy have calmed down but I'm dreading the thought of hot air ports stuck on a hot plain hotels with no air con ...

GYo · 20/06/2026 21:29

Mine says 38 on Tues and Wednesday now. It seems to increase every time I look….

EmeraldRoulette · 20/06/2026 21:34

@PaperTyger that's ages away

I hope you get whatever is you want

We have quite a dramatic change after the May heat wave - we did in the Southeast anyway

GloriaSmud · 21/06/2026 07:00

It looks like Friday is when temperatures ease off, when (as usually happens after a hot spell), it looks like thunderstorms cool things down a bit. Saturday, temperatures look more 25C for the south. The week after that, it's still going be warm (mid 20s again) but a bit more unsettled as well.

High pollen seems to have been a significant issue this year so far.

I'd be quite glad if the 1976 record topples as I am truly fed up of those 'resilience junkies' saying 'it's not 1976 you know!'
