Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

So humid here it's very unpleasant. Only 21c as well

As sort of expected, we've had nothing here today but looking at the Netweather radar, there's quite a lively thunderstorm going on in France at the moment, which is moving this way and will probably make its presence felt along the south coast in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

And Netweather have done an updated thunderstorm watch to cover tonight/into tomorrow...

It’s quite warm out there still.

Heavy, steady rain this morning, the kind we haven’t had for months. Haven’t heard any thunder yet.

Nothing in the way of a thunderstorm so far although last night, we had some sheet lightning (no rain or thunder) for about 30 minutes lighting up a cloud, just after the sun went down.

We've got quite an eerie light this morning and looking at the lightning map and the weather radar, I'm not sure we'll get a storm but rain isn't far away.

It's gone quite dark here and we've just had a rumble of thunder...

DS is off to Leeds with his mates. I'm hoping the thunder holds off until they get the tents up!

gingercat02 ~ Leeds might get a few rumbles (it's on the edge of the metoffice thunderstorm warning area) but I think it's more rain that there'll see later this afternoon so yes, hopefully they get tents up/organised before anything arrives.

DS got his tent up yesterday at Reading. He’s heading back this afternoon. Looks like the rain has pushed through here. I’m hoping it’s not a complete mud bath for them. Saturday looks like the worst day. Hoping the evenings are dry.

Well that was a damp squib (pun intended). We got less than 1mm. Which I suppose is better than nothing. The sun is now out.

We've got a break in the rain here but it's really humid out and I think we'll get one of the thundery showers that are sparking off as a result of the humidity....

I’m holding out for Saturday. That looks promising. Need something to breach the rain shield.

Not a drop here in the NE overcast but no rain.

We had quite a bit of flash flooding here. Think the showers are few and far between but intense when they hit.

We've got lightning and rumbles of thunder ~ think we're about to get a storm that I've been watching move slowly towards us for about 20 minutes or so.

Another thunderstorm warning's been issued by the metoffice.

Last night's storm that I was following was amazing ~ it lasted for 30-40 minutes and in the middle-end of it, lightning and rumbles of thunder were continuous and overhead. So we'll see if we're in for any more as we go through the rest of the day....

We had a terrific storm around 8pm, when it went really dark. The rain was like a monsoon, with continuous sheet lightning. I haven't seen a storm like that in years. The water butt and pond have filled up nicely.

Very humid again now, I wonder if we'll get another storm.

Just looked at the rainfall records for my town and see we had around 1mm in the whole of July, and a magnificent 22mm for August so far! So, in old money, less than an inch of rain in the past two months.

Looking out of the window now I can see heavy grey clouds over the hills but they appear to be whizzing by us as usual and we still have bright sunshine. The plants are a little happier as it is in the mid-twenties rather than 30C, but I am getting very envious of those who have had proper rain.

(Remind me of this when I am moaning about days and days of nothing but continuous rain at some point in the future... 😉)

I'm really looking forward to spending a rainy day in my potting shed sorting out cuttings for next year.

We had a bit of a light show but nothing as amazing as people are posting about. Same with the rain, decent amount that the gardens will appreciate but that's it. I looked in the empty bucket and there's maybe 2mm in the bottom. I'm just thankful the garden is wet and I'm actually hearing birdsong!! The Robin has been singing its little heart out ❤

It has been a bit 'hit and miss' when it's come to these storms. We had another storm yesterday with a lot more rain and it looks like a lot of people will get rain over this Bank Holiday weekend as well, so that'll help. And I've noticed too that since the temperature's have cooled off and rain has appeared, our garden birds have started coming back as well.

As for the Bank Holiday, it's looking unsettled at times ~ I think most people will get rain at some point but there'll be some brighter spells as well. Yesterday's thoughts from Netweaather...

It's currently raining here - it's not torrential, but nice steady light rain, which is hopefully not going to cause any flooding. And yes, I woke up to bird song this morning (before it started raining!).

Lots of rain here - which I know is much needed. Had to go and rescue DS from Reading festival this morning though! Looks like rain all day…
