Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

GloriaSmud · 02/06/2026 06:27

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

OH it's summer @GloriaSmud I've been posting on spring still. 🙈

justasking111 · 10/06/2026 09:10

All our summer planting is sulking instead of proliferating. I'm looking forward to the dryer warmer weather.

GloriaSmud · 10/06/2026 10:00

@justasking111 ~ Grin yes, we've had a change of season although the weather hasn't changed that much! Tomorrow looks a bit of a wash-out for many places but looks like things dry up over the weekend (although I think that the temperatures that the GFS were showing, have come down a bit so it's looking more like 20-25C at the moment for the south rather than the 25-30C that it was. But hopefully everyone will get a bit of warmth....

So for today, it's a day of sunshine and thundery showers and Netweather has issued one of their 'thunderstorm watches.'

Thunderstorms and rain apparently 5pm today SE London was supposed to be tomorrow. They got thunderstorms day wrong last week too. Where’s that big yellow thing supposed to be in the sky?

GloriaSmud · 10/06/2026 10:02

Is this in real time?

Is this in real time?

I think more or less it is ~ we're having a few rumbles of thunder at the moment (here in Leicester) and a few minutes ago, the lightning strikes weren't showing but they are now, so I think some strikes don't show up straight away at times.

I don’t mind the temperatures being revised down slightly from the high 20s but no more revision please - I need 23-25 for it to feel pleasantly warm! Low 20s just seems average for the time of year. And then we may be plunged back in to rain. Just want to be able to sit in the garden.

Anyway, the sun is warm at this time of year so as long as we see it over the weekend….

Delatron · 10/06/2026 15:05

It’s also very annoying that they (the forecasters) keep getting it so wrong. This weekend’s forecast has changed so many times. I have an outdoor event on Saturday and a boat trip on Sunday. We needed to cancel by tomorrow if the weather looked dodgy. It has looked amazing for the past few days - sunny and high 20s. Now we have cloudy and 22. Far less pleasant.

They have one job!

GloriaSmud · 11/06/2026 08:08

The GFS certainly overdid the temperatures for this weekend ~ it's looking ok but not the heatwave that was being forecast a few days ago. Next week, the east/south/SE will see the warmest weather (23-29C on some days) but everywhere else struggles to get into even the 20s at times. And still the unsettled theme continues.

Woke up to rain again this morning.

Big event in Conwy this weekend. I hope it's dryer for them.

< hides on the thread under a big winter duvet, please wake me up when summer finally arrives >

Summer starts with the equinox. Meterological summer is just another one of the sadly increasing attention seeking behaviour, which detracts from the real issues there are with our changing climate. Goes alongside only having women deemed attractive to present the weather on most tv channels.

I know what you're saying and agree. As a sailing family we go by equinox and tides as mother nature does. But the met office have other ideas.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/06/2026 22:38

Oh a new thread. Was still looking at spring.

The meteorological seasons have been around for over 200 years so I don’t think they are that attention seeking. Further back than that the traditional start of summer was Mayday with the solstice festivals being midsummer festivals. So it all depends on exactly what you are measuring really.

Thoroughly pissed off that the nice warm weather forecast this weekend has been taken away. I can’t believe forecasters can get it so wrong. Every forecast was saying high twenties and sunny. Now we have about 20 degrees which isn’t that warm.

GloriaSmud · 12/06/2026 07:42

It's what the computer models were saying ~ even the metoffice (with their supercomputer/s) were saying temperatures in the high 20s. At least it's going to be sunny for most of the country <clutches at straws>

Sunnyish here tomorrow and Sunday, but 17 and 15 respectively. I had to put the heating on last night. The thermostat was reading 17!

Delatron · 12/06/2026 09:39

Yeah @GloriaSmud it was strange that all the models were in agreement and now it’s gone!

I am also clutching at straws but surely with the sun out it will feel warmer…

GloriaSmud · 12/06/2026 09:50

@Delatron ~ I hope so. It can feel warm in the sun even when temperatures are in the 18-20C range with very little wind <clutches even tighter to straws!>

Yes we're the same temperatures and it'll probably be windy 🙈😁

Delatron · 12/06/2026 11:22

I’m going with the forecast I like the most which is The Met office - sunny and 22. It also has a bit or warmth next week.

It does feel a bit warmer/more humid outside so I can imagine when the sun comes out it may warm up more.

Yep same for me in SE London. Will grudgingly take that I guess.
