Today is the start of meteorological Autumn and the weather this week, certainly looks like it's going to match up to the new season! As for the rest of Autumn, there aren't any strong signals either way as to what to expect but here are some thoughts from….
TheWeatherOutlook.
And Netweather's thoughts for the week ahead...

Aurora showing right now on the NE coast of England. For anyone not that far North, you can see them live on the Shetland webcams

RainbowZebraWarrior ~ I often look at the webcams here and towards the winter, especially when they get 24 hours of darkness, you can often see some great displays of Aurora.

Thank you. I saw the northern lights at two locations 💗

There's a good show again right now on the Shetland Burrafirth cam.

It really is.

Missed the aurora display on the Shetland webcams again!

I often look at the Longyearbyen webcams ~ in the summer they have cruise ships stopping there and my face is often >> 😮at the size of some of them!
Winter seems to have arrived early this year as they've had some snow already.

So it's been a quiet few days and that theme continues into the weekend. There's a band of rain that moves from west to east overnight into tomorrow, with the worst of it being over Northern England and southern areas of Scotland before a return to dry and settled weather next week.

Thanks Gloria. We have to move our beehives back from their holidays tomorrow morning (Durham to Newcastle) so fingers crossed we make it before the rain. We shall be starting very early!

Edit: Just looked at the radar and it should hopefully be out of our way by 1am.

WillowTit · 27/09/2025 08:48

the weather remains mild this week for me with that forecast, 19 on wednesday

GloriaSmud · 27/09/2025 09:40

Yes, you should be ok for transporting your bees, RainbowZebraWarrior. (beekeeping ~ what a lovely thing to do! Smile )

WillowTit ~ it does look mild for some areas next week, with temperatures heading towards the 20C mark.

Beekeeping is great when it goes well but moving hives can be tricky, especially if you end up having to do it in the dark because you've been waiting for late returning bees.

Hope you get your girls moved okay, RainbowZebraWarrior.

Incredible Aurora show on the Burrafirth shetland webcam right now

GloriaSmud · 29/09/2025 21:17

Some nice shades of green showing there!

So far I think it's only Saturday that's forecast with gusty winds. Fingers crossed!

GloriaSmud · 30/09/2025 14:07

From Friday lunchtime onwards and across the weekend, it's looking rather stormy for quite a few areas (we're off to the SW on Friday and I'm trying to get down there by lunchtime/early afternoon!) Looking at the GFS, I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a named storm (and reading here, Netweather raise that possibility as well.)

MotherOfCatBoy ~ enjoy your walking break but I'd pay special attention to the weekend weather and look out for warnings.

Two ex-hurricanes causing trouble this week in Spain and later the UK

The low pressure remnants of ex-Hurricane Garbrielle could bring flooding to the Valencia region, the areas hit by catastrophic flooding less than a year ago. Also, ex-Hurricane Humberto looks to head towards the UK by next weekend, bringing a risk of...

GFS run Tue 30 Sep 2025 12:00z looks interesting for Fri 3 Oct 18:00z.
ICON is showing similar, as is ECMWF.
So some model alignment but it could change.
ICON looks to me to track the low going further north than ECMWF and GFS.

Definitely something to be aware of and to keep an eye on.

nannynick · 30/09/2025 19:12

Where Humberto goes is a bit of an unknown, but tracking towards the UK is looking possible, so may become a named storm here on Friday/Saturday.

GFS tracks, from ryanhallyall tropical storm tracker tool.

I really hope it goes further north.. will be keeping a close eye and if necessary we will sit out a day’s walk. We did that on Anglesey last year when we had the pleasure of Storm Lilian’s acquaintance.

Looks like the rain will be in the evening, you should be okay

Igneococcus · 01/10/2025 09:12

I'm in Argyll&Bute and we have weather warnings for rain from today to including Friday but nothing showing at the moment for Saturday when according to the BBC we are forecast up to 58 mph winds.
