Today is the start of meteorological Autumn and the weather this week, certainly looks like it's going to match up to the new season! As for the rest of Autumn, there aren't any strong signals either way as to what to expect but here are some thoughts from….
TheWeatherOutlook.
And Netweather's thoughts for the week ahead...

Biblical rain here this morning and into the afternoon. Then sunny. We had thunderstorms warnings that never developed though.

GloriaSmud · 05/09/2025 07:06

We've had some pretty good downpours over the last few days as well. Thunderstorms have been close by but went around us but hopefully after all the rain, DH will be able to dig up the potatoes at the allotment this evening!

Next week looks unsettled and strong winds might brush along the west coast of Scotland, Monday morning, which could bring some weather warnings or the possibility of the first named storm of the season.

And for those with clear skies, there should be a chance to see a total lunar eclipse, just as the moon rises on Sunday evening.

Missed the red moon last night

Stonking thunderstorm up the M5 just south of Bristol this afternoon though! Huge storm cell, loads of vertical and horizontal lightning, torrential rain, and hail. DH was driving thank goodness, I was a passenger. Nuts.

@MotherOfCatBoy we’re about 6 miles south of the M4, 20 miles east of Bristol and the skies were black and swirling in your direction. We had thunder, no lightning and a brief heavy shower but from the village you could see the storm south of Bath direction.

MotherOfCatBoy · 08/09/2025 20:35

Love that map @GloriaSmud , I was actually using it earlier - so many strikes clustered around and south of Bristol!
We were glad to leave it behind when we turned west across the Bridge (we live in S Wales), where it was a completely different day.
Also an extremely low tide - just after full moon and nearing the equinox. Only the central shipping channel had water in it, the rest was all mud and rock.

GloriaSmud · 08/09/2025 22:09

It's looking like quite an unsettled week so there's the chance of some more thunderstorms, for those that like them!

Ah and we are about to embark on a walking holiday - thunderstorms just about the worst possible thing

Delatron · 09/09/2025 08:49

Not liking the sound of all the rain and thunder for the rest of the week. I love September sunshine!

Hopefully next week looks a bit brighter?

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2025 09:17

I would say tomorrow and Thursday look like the main days when it comes to possible thunderstorms. The south might see some on Saturday morning.

Next week ~ the start of the week is looking unsettled but at the moment, it's looking a bit more settled/warmer towards the end of the week.

And Netweather's Thunderstorm Watch for today and overnight.

Great information on this thread, thank you @GloriaSmud.

We are hoping to go to Lewis and Harris in around 12 days, is it possible to get a forecast for that far ahead?

gingercat02 · 09/09/2025 09:47

First frost in Aviemore last night. It's definitely chilly in the mornings now.

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2025 13:17

@JacknDiane ~ (it's a bit far ahead in 'forecasting land') at the moment, it's looking rather unsettled. Friday overnight and throughout Saturday ~ quite wet and windy (Friday night especially), Saturday ~ chance of showers and Sunday, slightly better.

gingercat02 ~ it was 6 or 7C this morning. Another sign of Autumn.....

Thanks @GloriaSmud hopefully it settles back down. I was very much enjoying my sunny dog walk this morning. I feel like a nice September helps with the dreary months to come.

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2025 14:29

Delatron ~ Smile
A nice, quiet Autumn would be nice (with a bit of rain overnight maybe to fill up the reservoirs!)

That would be perfect! I’d like to put an order in for that…!

I fear it’s going to be stormy though..if I have to buy another fence I’ll be cross..

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2025 16:38

@becausetrampslikeus and @Delatron ~ I'd rather not be starting on that list of named storms that was published by the metoffice last week, this early in the season!

Well here storm Amy is set to clobber us Sunday night. Hoping that it's not as bad as the forecast is predicting. 🙈.

becausetrampslikeus · 10/09/2025 09:53

@justasking/ are you around the English - Scottish border region 😳 edit to acknowledge the existence of Wales and apologies to the Welsh including DH )

justasking111 · 10/09/2025 10:28

North west Wales. 😂

becausetrampslikeus · 10/09/2025 10:29

Not far enough away for comfort

Pixiedust1234 · 10/09/2025 15:01

< waves back >

I was most put out yesterday morning to find the windscreen on the car was totally covered in condensation due to cooler overnight temperatures. How dare it dip that low, it's not Autumn enough yet!

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/09/2025 19:46

Just checking in.

Was it absolutely necessary for the autumn switch to be flipped just because it was the 1st September. We seem to have gone from summer to autumn immediately last Monday. The grass is loving it and is no longer brown. Me standing at the bus stop not loving it so much.
