Today is the start of meteorological Autumn and the weather this week, certainly looks like it's going to match up to the new season! As for the rest of Autumn, there aren't any strong signals either way as to what to expect but here are some thoughts from….
TheWeatherOutlook.
And Netweather's thoughts for the week ahead...

@JacknDiane ~ (it's a bit far ahead in 'forecasting land') at the moment, it's looking rather unsettled. Friday overnight and throughout Saturday ~ quite wet and windy (Friday night especially), Saturday ~ chance of showers and Sunday, slightly better.

gingercat02 ~ it was 6 or 7C this morning. Another sign of Autumn.....

Thank you @GloriaSmud

Sunday afternoon and overnight into Monday, there's a low pressure system that looks like it will sweep across the country. There aren't any weather warnings at the moment and it hasn't been named yet but it could bring strong winds and a lot of rain, especially to the south and SW.

Very windy and wet in Northern Ireland yesterday and today (my family are all there)

The metoffice has issued a wind weather warning for Sunday night/throughout Monday.

(It isn't named at the moment but looking at the GFS, it wouldn't surprise me if it does become 'Storm Amy.' I think there might be some more weather warnings issued ~ maybe a rain one for Scotland?)

Just checking in.

Was it absolutely necessary for the autumn switch to be flipped just because it was the 1st September. We seem to have gone from summer to autumn immediately last Monday. The grass is loving it and is no longer brown. Me standing at the bus stop not loving it so much.

I know here we woke to a nippy morning on the 1st September, the skies emptying daily, but sunny spells. DH moaning that the grass needs cutting, but it's thick lush green blades.

I can't see an Indian summer, just stormy weather here.

One thing the fishing locally has been dire this summer, the mackerel never arrived, nor the sea bass. They've been in deeper water. Well this last week they've returned not in huge numbers but a huge improvement.

Delatron · 12/09/2025 08:40

Thanks for keeping us all updated @GloriaSmud I guess at least the jet stream is stuck over us now rather than in the summer which can often happen.

I shall cheer myself up by browsing autumn clothes!

Hope the storm isn’t too bad..

@Delatron ~ Smile
Updated warning ~ Wind warning covers most of England and Wales.

Thanks @GloriaSmud hopefully it will push through quickly on Sunday and not be too destructive.

justasking111 · 15/09/2025 15:18

It's absolutely screaming outside. Awful racket. Too many leaves on the trees. Not good.

MotherOfCatBoy · 15/09/2025 17:56

Must be worse up with you @justasking111 - it’s persistently blustery here but not howling. A fair few branches have come down, no trees yet. Can’t wait for it to settle down, I don’t like high winds.

GloriaSmud · 16/09/2025 07:19

A bit of calm today before more wind and rain arrives tomorrow ~ justasking111 you'll get some strong winds and heavy rain but hopefully not as bad as yesterday, when it comes to the wind. The NW coast of Scotland though will especially be in line for gales.

When it comes to the rain ~ that'll be moving from west to east, across the middle of the country from midnight but should have cleared through by early afternoon tomorrow.

I know Gloria 🙈. Miraculously no trees or fences came down. DH lit the log burner yesterday and we hunkered down. It's so dark this morning and cold again. No bally Indian summer in sight.

The weather Gods gave us a parasol yesterday, only from next door and at least it didn’t damage itself or my garden on its journey.

That looks decidedly like the sort of parasol someone has left out in the hope of an Indian Summer.

The only damage I sustained thankfully was snapped dahlias. They are now dotted around the place in various bottles and vases. Must do a better job of staking next year!

That's a gorgeous dahlia, RainbowZebraWarrior!

No damage to speak of here, just a lot of leaves blown down.

GloriaSmud · 17/09/2025 07:03

So this wet and windy weather should pass through fairly quickly for most of us although the NW coast of Scotland will get the strongest winds overnight into tormorrow.

A sort of 'Indian summer' returns for a day or two from Friday, with temperatures around 20C (mid 20s for the Midlands/SE) before more wet and windy weather returns for the rest of the weekend. Next week looks ok ~ not especially warm but dry.

(And for those who like to plan early and get their gifts in, Aldi have sent me an email this morning to tell me that it's 100 days until Christmas........... 🎄 Grin)

Thanks @GloriaSmud - I’m looking forward to Friday/Saturday, it’s looking warmish. It will be a nice relief from all this autumnal weather..

GloriaSmud · 17/09/2025 07:50

@Delatron ~ Autumn was rather turned on like a switch from the 1st September but at least the rain will go some way towards helping with the reservoir levels. Having a few dry/warm days added in to the mix will be nice for everyone as well though!

I've seen people wearing gloves already. We've skipped September and gone straight to end of October.

21c here today. The rain has finally cleared up
