Today is the start of meteorological Autumn and the weather this week, certainly looks like it's going to match up to the new season! As for the rest of Autumn, there aren't any strong signals either way as to what to expect but here are some thoughts from….
TheWeatherOutlook.
And Netweather's thoughts for the week ahead...

Just seen that the Metoffice updated, now there is wind warning for all of Scotland, NI and the North of England.

It looks like the storm has tracked further north than was showing over the last few days.
(MotherOfCatBoy ~ you might get a bit of walking in before the strong winds hit around mid-afternoon.)

Don't walk on the cliff sides though. 😳

Very true, Justasking111. Western coastal areas look like they're going to be places to avoid.
Scotland looks like it's going to be badly hit and it looks like weather warnings will change as we get nearer to the weekend.

Yep here the trees are still leafy not great in high winds.

MotherOfCatBoy · 01/10/2025 20:54

That’s exactly where we are headed! I think @justasking111 may know the area - Caernarfon to Trefor tomorrow, if we get out early we should beat the rain; Trefor up over the mountain pass to Nefyn on Friday, again if we get out early we’ll miss the worst but will likely get some heavy rain late on; Saturday is the big one for winds, we were hoping to walk Nefyn to half way down the north coast that day, but might sit it out if it’s very windy. Sunday we’re rounding the headland to Aberdaron, it looks back to normal-ish by then.
We’ll take it day by day and bail if it’s not safe. I am a wuss, no fighting the elements here!

granite on Trefor mountain. DH and a stone mason once bought and collected a pile for a log burner surround very pretty colour. Our dog came from there as a puppy. Interesting walk

We have a 73 mph peak at about 6 pm today from the SW, we have no shelter whatsoever from that direction.
Looking at the earth wind map with the pressure overlaid it, that low pressure system covers most of the North Atlantic.

Gosh. Whereabouts are you? I'm just asking some time to update myself with the latest forecasts and weather earnings now. (I'm NE coast of England and we are looking at 50mph from 3pm today until tomorrow evening)

Took all the apples from the trees last night and this morning. Going to move the bins etc now.

In Argyll&Bute right by the coast. My house is at the edge of the mouth of a sea loch so wind coming from the Southwest comes over a large stretch of open water without anything in its way to slow it down.
The people who run the facility I work in have just announced they are closing reception in an hour and they are urging everyone to go home before the storm properly starts. It's raining heavily at the moment but the wind isn't very strong yet.

Urging everyone to get home before the storm starts proper sounds like a sensible plan. I spent all my summer holidays in your region as a kid. My Dad used to go diving in Loch Long (among others) It's such a beautiful area. Hope you stay safe.

We're just dripping here, wind not expected till later tonight. If the trees were bare wouldn't be concerned. Full leaf is a strain on the trees.

Wonder how our walkers are doing.

Thanks :) it's lovely here when it's not stormy.
It's the start of the October holidays here today, I bet a lot of people want to get away today or tomorrow. Two years ago we had heavy rain (no wind) when the holidays started that cut us off in all directions, landslides a bit further South (one of them still not completely fixed) floods to the North and East.

It's rather grim here, my volunteer shift on St Mary's ain't going to happen @RainbowZebraWarrior
We have a uni open day in Leeds tomorrow which won't be much fun.

Yes I'm quite surprised at how quickly its all kicked off here. Pretty much exactly time wise as was forecast. I guess it goes to prove that we should all take heed of weather warnings. I see my next door neighbour hasn't secured anything like their trampoline so hope it doesn't end up causing damage. Volunteering at St Mary's sounds like a good thing to do. I may have to look into that.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 03/10/2025 16:11

We're too far south, in Oxfordshire, to feel much of this storm, but we are getting lovely and very much needed rain! 10.8mm so far today and I'm very glad to see it. I was putting in some new plants at a garden yesterday and the soil was dust dry a foot down, but it should be starting to look a bit better by now.

Hope all those in the north are safely tucked up and no trampolines go on their travels!

Igneococcus · 03/10/2025 17:45

Horrendous now, the dormer is groaning

MotherOfCatBoy · 03/10/2025 19:32

@justasking111 we are fine, thanks for thinking of us! We set out at 06:45 this morning to get the window in the weather, crested Bwll y’r Eifl about 8am in clear skies and were at Nefyn before 11, in the rain by then. Been tucked up in our pub rooms all afternoon listening the wind howling down the high street.
We’ll decide tomorrow on whether to walk or not - currently thinking we’ll sit out the morning til the weather warning is over then maybe poke our noses out for a shorter stint mid afternoon when it’ll be blustery rather than gale force.

justasking111 · 03/10/2025 20:24

Very wise. It's eased up a bit now we're in the eye of it. Will increase again overnight.

Poor Scotland though.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/10/2025 20:33

Looking at the Windy app right now, it looks like the West Coast of Ireland are getting it worst. As usual, we seem to have some sort of vortex effect here on the NE coast of England too. I don't think the weather warnings do justice sometimes as it obviously depends on how exposed you are.

Every time I think "it seems to calm down ever so slightly" another massive gust rattles the house. Local FB sites are full with reports of fallen trees and blocked roads.

justasking111 · 04/10/2025 13:42

Stopped raining around 11am. Now it's picked up again.

gingercat02 · 04/10/2025 14:44

We're in Leeds for a uni open day, it's pissing down
