Amber snow warning for 9th and 10th March in the Pennines and Peak district.

I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

My milkman made it through last night. But then he always does. The milk was almost buried in snow though.

UrsulaPandress · 10/03/2023 08:06

My milkman promised he was setting off late last night. Folk in remoter places put photos of their milk delivery on Facebook. I live on the main road so presume they were leaving us till last and got stuck somewhere.

it’s the newspaper I miss.

ListenLinda · 10/03/2023 08:13

Still snowing. Can see neighbours clearing their steps and stuff, can’t hear any traffic when I stuck my head out of the window a few minutes ago.

PuppyMonkey · 10/03/2023 08:29

School is closed. Grin

Ilkeston in Derbyshire on the border with Notts. Snowed all night, quite a blanket now but it’s a bit sort of sloppy snow, the roads all seem clear if a bit sludgy.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/03/2023 08:41

Still snowing.

19 hours later. Can’t get out of the house.

I'm in the peak park and completely snowed in and cut off and the power cable is so heavy with snow I'm half expecting it to go down. And it's still snowing.

I’m on the border. Can’t remember it like this for years. Can’t even open the front door!

Well Sheffield has had a bit more overnight, buses have stopped altogether and I can see the lights of people stuck on the road up the hill. Will pop out with a ruler in a bit.

What part do you live in?

We can’t get out of the front door!

I'm in the SW and meant to be driving north to the Peak District for this weekend. My destination is near Carsington Water. I don't want to drive 4 hours plus then have to turn back! Or worse. Please can any locals tell me about the roads NE of Ashbourne? I see the A515 is closed but the traffic camera at Hulland Ward looks ok and I won't be arriving in the area until about 2pm if I do come.

Any on the ground reports gratefully received 🙂

At the moment I'd say very tricky unless you're in a 4x4, plenty of roads are closed. I think it is going to brighten up later but stay cold so I don't know how much it's going to clear. I would recommend local Facebook groups, Matlock and District Neighbourhood watch is a useful one which will cover Carsington, there may be an Asbourne one as well. Hope you make it xx

Rosie295 · 10/03/2023 09:00

Thanks very much, that's really helpful. I'm setting off, have a plan b to go to relatives in Cheshire, it's ok there. Will see how things are this afternoon! 🙂

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 10/03/2023 09:10

South Cheshire, not far from M6 and it's melting on the drive and the cars - also the tops of the fences and the shed roof look less snowy than half an hour ago. Patio and paths clear. Just a bit stuck to my poor camellias, I doubt I'll see a flower this year as the buds keep dropping off.

Our milkman didn't make it either! Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/03/2023 09:35

Someone needs to take my tablet away, I am getting rather cross with people on AIBU justifying why it was ok for all those people to be out stuck on the M62, creating a nightmare for emergency services.

Sheffielder signing in, 45cm of snow in our back garden and traffic free silence all around

Thecatisboss · 10/03/2023 09:52

Apparently Penistone has been on BBC news as badly affected. It's up to my knees when I walked to work this morning! Dd is planning a snowman....

Doesn’t look like we’re going everywhere today!

Ineedwinenow · 10/03/2023 10:16

Yeah we’re not going anywhere either! Is there anyone on here from Flash ( or near) if so how are you guys getting on?

ListenLinda · 10/03/2023 11:03

MIL just turned up, said it is up to her knees in places. DH currently digging the car out.

DangerPigeon · 10/03/2023 11:23

We're in the southern hilly suburbs of Sheffield, on a cleared main road and it was okay to drive once we dug out (collaborative effort with the neighbours). A foot deep on the drive and higher in the drifts. The city centre was alright but there's a lot of slush and melt about that will lead to some serious black ice tonight.

UrsulaPandress · 10/03/2023 11:41

Our local mountain rescue were out all night looking after folk stuck on the M62. Junction 22 is the highest motorway junction in the country. Madness to attempt that stretch in last nights weather.

I read a post on Facebook this morning from someone going east on the m62 from Manchester, who’d seen there were problems on the motorway last night so thought they’d try the A roads instead, with predictable results. Anyone familiar that area would know that was utter insanity!

RampantIvy · 10/03/2023 13:41

I'm near Penistone @Thecatisboss. Someone posted a photo of an empty Tesco car park on the local Facebook page this morning. Well, empty except for a load of snow.

It's melting fast in the sunshine now.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2023 13:41

And the first train of the day inched past our house at about 10 mph at about 9.30

Thecatisboss · 10/03/2023 14:01

@RampantIvy I saw that post too! It looks gorgeous now out there pavements look very slushy though.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2023 14:19

I'm thinking of heading to Tesco this afternoon @Thecatisboss I hope it isn't too busy (love the user name BTW)
