Amber snow warning for 9th and 10th March in the Pennines and Peak district.

I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

I was meant to be driving from the Cotswolds to Hull tomorrow viaM1/M18 what do you think of my chances?

WhatCanWeDoNext · 09/03/2023 15:28

@RampantIvy glad your DH made his appointment!

Our house battery system has just announced that it’s expecting a snowstorm and started to frantically charge itself from the grid. I’m hoping it doesn’t actually get as bad as the battery thinks it’s going to. 🤞🤞

I'm not sure I understand. 😕 I'm guessing you have solar with a battery? I didn't realise they could take power out of the grid, I thought they just sent any excess one way.
I'm interested in how the announcement was made, though.
Was it a siren, a ping on your phone or a page dressed in velvet with a trumpet? Grin
Sounds very clever...I've just dug the candles out of the drawer and found the matches.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 09/03/2023 16:46

@pussycatinfluffyslippers yes it’s a battery attached to the solar system. It fills itself up overnight at cheap rate if we’re not forecast enough sun.
The announcement was a push message on phones iPads etc. Presumably the velvet clad pages were stuck in snow on the Pennines 🤣

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 09/03/2023 16:51

@WhatCanWeDoNext I'm just stunned that it's linked to a weather forecast. I may have to do some investigating...

WhatCanWeDoNext · 09/03/2023 16:59

@pussycatinfluffyslippers I assume it’s linked to a forecast. I just know that some nights it charges and others it doesn’t. I think there’s some sort of AI involved. It’s a Tesla.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 09/03/2023 16:59

Our snow is currently rain.

Just posted on the other thread that my parents are due to land at LBA tomorrow at 7pm.

I reckon the chances are slim!

Did they get in? It's a high airfield that one!

From the Hull end, it's been raining most of the day with occasional sleet. If you can get to the end of the M18 onto the M62 you'll be fine from there. Can't speak to the earlier part of the journey though, sorry.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 09/03/2023 18:08

Our snow is currently wind. 🙄
All the snow has melted.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/03/2023 18:18

Still coming down here and forecast all night. I took another picture of my garden. About 2 or 3 more inches fallen since then

3 seconds after posting that the arch fell down from weight of snow.

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 18:30

@topofbighill they’re due to land at 7.15pm, so still remains to be seen! Snow still falling heavily here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2023 18:59

Just seen that some flights are being diverted from LBA within the last hour.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/03/2023 19:13

Yes, my beautiful arch😭

Just been on local Yorkshire news that west of Sheffield has had most snow😞been coming down all day with hardly a break. And predicted same all night😣

The A380 that's just arrived at Manchester had to go round again before landing. Not sure if it's the snow or wind. It's gone really rough out there.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow Sorry about your lovely arch.

Half an hour ago:

Snowing (can't tell if the runway is being kept clear), visibility isn't great there but the real kicker is probably the cloudbase which is down at 100 feet AGL.

SeeTurtle · 09/03/2023 19:56

Well I’m thoroughly disappointed. Bang in the amber warning area and in high peak and we have barely even got a couple of millimetres😢. And that only came down around 6.00 pm. Every road around us is closed except the road to Manchester. Where’s my snow! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/03/2023 19:57

@SeeTurtle we seem to have got your share. Probably 20 miles away or so.

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 20:17

@notimagain they landed. The two flights in front were circling for ages, and ended up diverting to other airports. The captain said if he missed his approach they were off to Birmingham! He nailed it 😂

hope they gave him a well deserved applause and I don’t mean that sarcastically!

Glad to hear it worked out..

I was watching briefly and NB’d Ryanair heading off to (?) Liverpool…

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 20:57

Yeah that one diverted to Liverpool, the Paris one diverted to Birmingham.

Railwayroad · 10/03/2023 05:30

I’m in Salford. No snow. Well some fell but just not significant. Every other local borough seems to be full of snow.

pawz · 10/03/2023 05:39

I'm north west (more coastal) in the yellow area, we've got a good few inches this morning!!
