I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

Definitely coming down in preston but as always, not sticking
(Preston doesn't do snow!)

PuppyMonkey · 09/03/2023 12:14

I’m in ilkeston in Derbyshire and it’s been quite heavy and settling all morning, easing off now. Colleague’s kids are being sent home at 1.10pm but no word yet from DD’s school.

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 12:23

@OhYouBadBadKitten I know, I was a bit huffy with them on the phone when I told them DD wasn't going to be in. They just told me rain roads are clear and school is open so she should be going in. I said my childs safety is more important than your attendance target.

stayathomegardener · 09/03/2023 12:43

Airport run was fine, still snowing but getting slushy in Cheshire now.

RampantIvy · 09/03/2023 12:45

I'm near Penistone. The snow is very wet and slushy so the roads are clear. Woodhead is still open.
It has settled in the garden and there looks to be about 2 - 3 inches.

DelilahBucket · 09/03/2023 13:02

I've had a message from DS's school to say the buses are picking the kids up at 1:45. It's snowed none stop but lighter now and the roads are still clear. I can't tell if it really is going to get as bad as it says. Even the M62 peak looks fine.

Em3978 · 09/03/2023 13:03

I'm in Chesterfield. One secondary was closed all day, others have finished at lunch. Primaries are open but the one I work at had freedom to pickup from lunchtime onwards.
Roads are ok if you're careful, my drive (on a slope) was not. Nearly parked sideways across next door's and ours together!! 😱

If he can't land at Manchester, Leeds would be the nearest one. I'm keeping an eye on LBA as my parents land there this evening. Hope you DH gets home safely!

Unfortunately the current Leeds Bradford airport forecast (chance of periods of heavy snow and quite poor visibility throughout the night) is slightly worse than the one for Manchester for the same period..

TBH none of the airport forecasts for the north west are great so if there any diversions they might end up being to places quite distant....

Hope it all works out OK.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 09/03/2023 13:17

@RampantIvy i believe Woodhead Pass has now been closed but I think they’re hoping to reopen mid afternoon. Snake Pass shut too (I wouldn’t fancy negotiating the landslides in this weather!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2023 13:19

Remember that the amber warning doesn't actually start until 3pm, so just because things are manageable now, doesn't mean they will continue to be.

@notimagain Yeah, usually even a light fog at LBA is enough to divert to another airport - i've had that experience a few times!

I have advised them to expect disruption!

cheshirecatssmile · 09/03/2023 13:47

My weather map says 31mph gusts of wind
By the looks of the trees I agree
Today was in my top 10 worst dog walks
Reasonable flakes coming down

Ineedwinenow · 09/03/2023 13:58

It’s just slushy here in the village next to Belper!

Yes. I heard it on the travel news after I posted. DH managed to easily get to his hospital appointment. The roads everywhere else are clear, and the trains are running.

The snow is wet and slushy.

TokyoSushi · 09/03/2023 14:07

Crazy snow just started again here in Cheshire, if you could have torrential rain, but in snow form then that's what we have. But it's that stupid snow that's blowing about all over the place and not settling anywhere. Sigh.

Daftasabroom · 09/03/2023 14:18

I can understand cigarettes coming with a health warning, but amber snow? Really?

Yeah. Bloody snowflakes at the Met Office forecasting possible disruption. Worlds gone mad.

It was more that I thought everyone knows not to eat amber snow

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2023 14:41

I always find it a bit mad that people take offence at weather forecasting!

You can't understand that deciding to "pop out" in the car in the middle of a snowstorm, getting stuck on an impassable road and spending the night in -10 temperatures might not be the best for your health? 🙄

Notonthestairs · 09/03/2023 14:42

Ah.
My sarcasm was unnecessary in that case. I apologise.

@IkBenDeMol I'm sure you'd survive on the amber snow if ignoring warnings is your thing

Cyclistmumgrandma · 09/03/2023 14:55

A fair few drifts here in Staffordshire Moorlands. Royal Mail have decided my address is "inaccessible", my yoga class was cancelled and the local farm shop has closed early. I suppose this could be classed as disruption. Ah well.

Insheerpanic · 09/03/2023 15:10

His flight was delayed due to some sort of strikes so he's not long left.. very annoyed as that means by the time he's now due to land the weather could be much worse... ahh going to be a stressful evening!!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/03/2023 15:13

My back garden. It’s been snowing all day.
