Amber snow warning for 9th and 10th March in the Pennines and Peak district.

I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

I knew we were getting some snow but I didn't realise that Leeds was right in the middle of the amber warning! Thanks for the thread OP! ❄️ ❄️

UrsulaPandress · 08/03/2023 18:51

Nooo. I don’t want snow. Make it go away please.

ListenLinda · 08/03/2023 18:55

Just posted on the other thread that my parents are due to land at LBA tomorrow at 7pm.

I reckon the chances are slim!

You do! Even if there isn't any in the town centre there's normally tonnes around Shottle and Alderwasley. I have pictures of massive snow drifts that look like something from Canada!

There was a decent dump of snow up there in January.

Are you sure 😆 I’ve lived here all my life and work from home and in January we had it for two hours one afternoon, maybe it did up towards wirksworth /matlock as it’s higher up but in my village next to Belper we definitely don’t get snow dumped regularly

When are you hoping to go stayathomegardener?

DD's flight is 18.00 but the M56 tends to get snarled up at the best of times.

Dd is happy to take her laptop and work so I could go anytime.

Have people lost the ability to read their own weather forecasts?

Errrr Bad Kitten is my weather forecast!
Countless times she's saved our harvests when haymaking.

As someone who suffered through the Beast from the East which hit central Scotland about 5 years ago, please please PLEASE take these warnings seriously. Don't travel. That means no "popping" anywhere. Stock up on your milk/bread tomorrow. Be prepared for the Council to take a while clearing roads - gritters are useless with very heavy snowfall. It took about 5 days before we could get out of our street.

Look out for your elderly neighbours or people who are vulnerable. Local social media sites are great for information.

Yes it can be fun, but it's really not anything to be doing happy dances about.

Nevertheless, I am 😜 🤣

That's tricky! You might find that it turns to rain on the way in the afternoon as warmer air pushes in, but as we found today it didn't really go to plan. I think local radio and highways will be your best bet tomorrow.

Take a trip up to The Bear now and I guarantee you will see some. The roads are drivable but white over in places. The grass and walls are well covered and it is still falling.

If you are down towards Milford you will get less granted.

I regularly see a snow line halfway up Belper Lane as you go up the hill. Literally at one end of the road rain, at the other proper snow.

We haven't had much this year, but I'm grateful, driving in it isn't much fun.

Without telling you my village 😆 I live near the dead poets and we now have some on grass but not the roads or pavements yet! But usually It seems to miss our village entirely! Kilburn and denby don’t get it much either, it’s really bizarre

TokyoSushi · 08/03/2023 20:30

Checking in, although we're too far over in Cheshire!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 20:39

I should say though Stayathome it looks like you ae out of the worst of it.

Joining, we are due to get it on the morrow.

HereHereSheSays · 08/03/2023 20:49

I've planned to be driving Bakewell to Liverpool at 5am tomorrow Confused and back again around 2pm.
The roads through Monsal Head, Tideswell onto New Mills are enough to make me want to stay in bed! Hoping it's white over when I wake up, then the decision isn't mine to make

Thecatisboss · 08/03/2023 20:50

I live in on the edge of the Pennines and keep looking out the window to see what it's like out there. Roads round here were bad earlier very slippy.

DH meeting in Leeds tomorrow has been cancelled and I can walk to work. Dd is very hopeful though for a snow day from school.

ScarletPower · 08/03/2023 20:55

DS2 meant to be flying from Leeds Bradford to Poland at 7am on Friday. What do you think are the chances the flight will go ahead, we also need to leave home around 4.30am (only 10 miles) to get him to the airport 😭😭😭

Hoppinggreen · 08/03/2023 20:57

@ScarletPower I think it’s supposed to clear by then. Fingers crossed for you

ScarletPower · 08/03/2023 21:05

Thanks, it's his first ever lads trip. I don't want him to go but on the other hand I don't want the poor lad to have his trip cancelled

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 21:06

I don't have a feel for how resilient the airport is Scarlet but I do know it has a particularly high altitude and bring right in the amber zone I'm afraid that it is very likely to have some significant disruption at least tomorrow.

OP posts:
ListenLinda · 08/03/2023 21:12

@ScarletPower my parents are flying into that airport tomorrow - I have told them to prepare for disruption.
Friday morning is still in the amber zone and heavy snow still forcast.

Yerroblemom1923 · 08/03/2023 21:24

@LividNC I'd take your sleeping bag, just in case! At least schools are always warm.

DangerPigeon · 08/03/2023 21:34

We've already got about an inch of the white stuff, just popped out for milk and the roads are very quiet.

Restlessinthenorth · 08/03/2023 21:37

Desperately need to be on an early train out of leeds to London on Friday. Absolutely shitting myself it won't happen. Do we know if trains get easily disrupted? Never had to take one in a blizzard before!

DangerPigeon · 08/03/2023 21:40

The train companies are quite good in Twitter about disruption. I need to catch one Friday to London too so will be keeping an eye on them
