Amber snow warning for 9th and 10th March in the Pennines and Peak district.

I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

Doing a happy dance here,OP! 💃🤞

WhatCanWeDoNext · 08/03/2023 17:58

I’ll join you in that dance but more as a way of keeping warm than anything else! 🥶😅

Ineedwinenow · 08/03/2023 17:59

Thank you 😊 I’m near Belper so I think it might just miss me but we have got small flakes coming down now, it’s definitely not settling! How is Matlock and Buxton doing if your that way ?

Railwayroad · 08/03/2023 18:08

Manchester swerved as usual

Yeah we never get it in Belper either! Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 18:25

Grin Manchester has done much better than my area over the past few years.

Where are you? Have you got any yet?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/03/2023 18:29

Sheffield is in parts of the peak Dustrict. It akways bloody snows in that bit ( which I’m in)

I hate it!

LividNC · 08/03/2023 18:33

I’m in the zone and shitting it.

I work an hour away (teacher) so if it starts before home time I’m fucked.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 18:35

I did get some this time Ineed. Not a lot but more than I've had for a few years, which isn't hard.

LividNC has your LA or HT not made a decision to close it yet?

OP posts:
stayathomegardener · 08/03/2023 18:37

What are my chances of getting to Manchester Airport from Chester Bad Kitten?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 18:39

When are you hoping to go stayathomegardener?

OP posts:
DangerPigeon · 08/03/2023 18:39

Waiting for it to hit tomorrow, I have multiple fingers crossed that it doesn't screw up the trains.

I work out of area in a high school.

No chance at all they’ll close. All the schools near home will close, but mine won’t.

If I’m at work when it starts I have no choice but to battle over the hills home.

Have people lost the ability to read their own weather forecasts?

IkBenDeMol · 08/03/2023 18:40

As someone who suffered through the Beast from the East which hit central Scotland about 5 years ago, please please PLEASE take these warnings seriously. Don't travel. That means no "popping" anywhere. Stock up on your milk/bread tomorrow. Be prepared for the Council to take a while clearing roads - gritters are useless with very heavy snowfall. It took about 5 days before we could get out of our street.

Look out for your elderly neighbours or people who are vulnerable. Local social media sites are great for information.

Yes it can be fun, but it's really not anything to be doing happy dances about.

Hoppinggreen · 08/03/2023 18:41

Think we are getting it, DDs college is doing online lessons tomorrow and Friday. We only live a 15 minute walk away but some kids travel quite far.
DSs school is a 5 minute walk so he will be going in

Have people lost the ability to read their own weather forecasts?

Have people lost the ability to scroll past threads that they're not interested in?

Unescorted · 08/03/2023 18:42

We have had a very light dusting this afternoon. It barely settled here. We are lower than Buxton so they might still have a bit.... although I have yet to see the usual Facebook updates on our local traffic watch, schools and snow watch pages.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 18:44

I'm hoping Ik that because much of that area is used to winter snow, that people will treat it more seriously than people in other areas might in the same situation.

LividNC you might need to talk to your HT tomorrow first thing and ask them about your options. It won't help them at all if you are stuck in a snowdrift Thursday night!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 18:39

When are you hoping to go stayathomegardener?

I need to do the same return journey as stayathomegardener Friday afternoon.

Manchester doesn't look like it'll get much snow (snow shield strikes again!) but West Cheshire looks like it'll get a pasting according to Met Office. I hope I'm wrong and that if it does, it's clearing by Friday afternoon 😬

You do! Even if there isn't any in the town centre there's normally tonnes around Shottle and Alderwasley. I have pictures of massive snow drifts that look like something from Canada!

There was a decent dump of snow up there in January.
