I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

I'm in the Amber area. I hope it doesn't mean that DH's hospital appointment gets cancelled.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2023 21:44

Do you have any alternative options Restless?

That Amber warning area looks a bit like an Easter Island stone head.Grin 🗿

My house is under his chin, just on the border of Derbyshire near Nottingham.

DangerPigeon · 08/03/2023 21:50

It does 😁

I'm in Preston and need to get to just below Birmingham about 2 hours drive

I'm hoping the road are ok tomorrow

I'm from NE Scotland so used to driving in it and I have snow tyres on my car but I'm worried about how people down here will cope if it's bad and they not used to it

Will the roads grind to a halt or are they good at keeping things moving.

I woke this morning to our village blocked with 4ft snow drifts but my 9am the tractor ploughs had been out and cleared them. But we are used to it , so it's generally not too bad delays

How much time should I allow for my journey - thank you

Not without losing a huge amount of money. Seriously praying to the weather gods!

I seriously wish there was reassurance or travel advice that I could give to people that would help. Unfortunately, in the amber area, all I can say is that be prepared for plans to be very difficult, or not to happen at all. I know it's grim and that in March you wouldn't expect to be worrying about this. Sometimes things are out of our control.

We’re in the middle of it. It’s tried a bit to snow today, but turned to sleet on and off. This evening it’s bitterly cold with strong winds and snowing again. We have lots of food and firewood. All the animals have food. We’d be fine staying in, but I care for my mum, who lives a mile away, so I’ll probably have to walk there and back! I’m trying to persuade her to move in, but she’s adamant she wants to stay at home!

Timeforsinging81 · 08/03/2023 22:20

I am fucked. Been waiting over 3 years for a Final Court hearing and everyone who needs to be there has to travel within the amber area tomorrow and Friday 😭

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 08/03/2023 22:30

Ds is due to fly from Southampton to Edinburgh on Friday at 4pm. Both towns look like they're in yellow zones. But, we've had an email from the carrier urging us to reschedule. We can't really, so hope flights aren't disrupted.

LakeFlyPie · 08/03/2023 22:40

Anyone in Birmingham? How's it looking there? Am supposed to be getting train from Manchester to New Street tomorrow morning ❄️

Mehmeh22 · 08/03/2023 22:44

Jeasus this is like the heatwave hysteria last summer all over again.

Let’s hope you don’t find yourself stranded rurally in the Peak District needing help or having to travel during heavy snow!

Everyone on here has to travel, look after the vulnerable or go to urgent appointments, which is why this thread was set up, It might just be a few flakes where you are but it isn’t in the Peak District, certain areas get cut off for days and even weeks in some cases so try and be a little compassionate if you can

It's really not. Those of us who have been through amber/red snow alerts previously know how disruptive it can be and how long it can take for roads to be cleared and things to get back to normal.

Nobody's being hysterical. Just advising being prepared and planning ahead.

Pulling up a seat to join my fellow Derbyshire folk on the snow lookout :). And can't believe how many of you live in and around Belper/Matlock! waves 👋

Hello 👋 🤩

Mehmeh22 · 08/03/2023 23:01

Well I have lived rurally and you just make sure you're prepared for it. Its not like it's happened suddenly. Wondering tonight what public transport is going to be tomorrow is worrying for no reason imo. These threads can lead to pure panic with some too, which is why I find them irresponsible.

Just wait. It needs to build up first lol

Without telling you my village 😆 I live near the dead poets and we now have some on grass but not the roads or pavements yet! But usually It seems to miss our village entirely! Kilburn and denby don’t get it much either, it’s really bizarre

Ah I wondered if you were in that area, you do get less round there.

RenoDakota · 08/03/2023 23:12

This is shit. I live in the South Pennines and have a long and important train journey to make on Friday early morning. Planned to drive originally but changed to train as would rather be delayed on a train than stuck in a car.

RampantIvy · 09/03/2023 06:43

There has been no snow since last night here in South Yorkshire. The roads are clear and the trains should be running.
We are near Sheffield BTW.

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 06:53

There’s a good covering on the ground here in Bradford. Currently sleeting. Waiting for word from school.
A few local have closed in anticipation, and one is closing at 2pm.
i can hear cars and traffic on the nearby main road, so the roads are okay for now.

RedPandaFluff · 09/03/2023 06:54

Urgh. I'm supposed to get the train down to London today, then back up north tomorrow. Bad idea . . . ?
