Amber snow warning for 9th and 10th March in the Pennines and Peak district.

I feel that this warrants it's own mini thread as it could be a pretty severe event. Blizzard conditions and snow up to 40cm over higher ground are possible. This could cut off isolated communities and lead to power cuts

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-03-09 is the Met Office warning.

Please do not take either the exact location of the amber warning, nor the timings as exact. If you live just outside the warning area, think of it like a fuzzy boundary, not a hard boundary.

If school finishes at 2:45pm, don't think that's ok, the warning doesn't start until 3pm. The area will already be under pressure from snow through the day with a yellow warning already in force. Don't be that person stuck in a drift somewhere!

Friday afternoon may see a partial thaw, but with freezing conditions overnight on Friday night, ice could be a real issue on Saturday morning.

My parents are in Greater Manchester and have called me this morning to say they aren't coming for childcare reasons because of the snow warning.

We're not even in the amber area

GloriaSmud · 09/03/2023 07:02

RedPandaFluff Where are you going from?
This website might be able to help.

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 07:04

@NatMoz the snow will be heavy and distruptive even in the yellow area, unfortunately.

ListenLinda · 09/03/2023 07:06

Just reading/watching sky news - with the possibility of blizzard like conditions and 20cm - how likely is it that the warning could be upgraded?

Beamur · 09/03/2023 07:07

Pennines here. Woken up to a very pretty dusting of snow and a text from high school saying that the school is closed today! DD is made up as this is the first time in 5 years..

DelilahBucket · 09/03/2023 07:14

I'm slap bang in the middle of the amber warning. I am a few minutes walk from work so that won't affect me, am awaiting a text to say school is closed. DH works miles away and is self employed so he's going in and planing an early finish.
We've had about an inch over night, I've called it the pre-snow snow.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 09/03/2023 07:17

Snowing in South Cheshire.
About 5 miles from the M6 if anyone is travelling up/down.

LP9 · 09/03/2023 07:26

Not read the full thread so may have been said before but for this site gives updates on roads in high peak

We had snow in Manchester yesterday early afternoon, but it never stuck!

Not expecting anything today, but our office has closed and asked staff to WFH as we do have staff who live in the Peak

I think unlikely ListenLinda unless more than expected falls. If you look at the impact grid, there would have to be an unforecast increase in severity of impacts to take this to a red.
I think people underestimate the potential impacts of amber warnings. Red warnings are issued very rarely because they need to be taken incredibly seriously.

Our snow in a yellow area yesterday was enough to cause quite a few bumps. If an area isn't generally used to and prepared for driving in snow, especially in congested urban areas, then it doesn't take much to create chaos.

Urgh. I'm supposed to get the train down to London today, then back up north tomorrow. Bad idea . . . ?

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier. There will certainly be train disruption through the amber area and also quite possibly in some of the yellow areas. It depends on where you are travelling through and how patient you are.

Penistone here right on the edge of the Pennines, coming down thick and fast, just had a msg from school to say it’s closed today, the roads look passable at the moment but prob not for much longer

RampantIvy · 09/03/2023 07:55

I'm near you @vickibee and the trains are running to time. One has just gone past our house. I'm surprised school is closed TBH as the roads are clear. Maybe it is because the forecast is for lots more.

The snow is light and not settling on hard surfaces, but it is settling on the grass.

TokyoSushi · 09/03/2023 08:00

Snowing now in Cheshire, loads of it but small flakes, settling a little bit on the car but nowhere else. DH is treating DS to a lift to school, seems a bit mean to make him go on his bike this morning!

RampantIvy · 09/03/2023 08:16

Our local Facebook pages are full of school closures. We have teachers coming across the Pennines, and if Woodhead is closed they are stuffed.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/03/2023 08:19

Isn't it the yellow snow that we should be wary of?

I'm sure that is what the eminent meteorologist Frank Zappa said.

Hoppinggreen · 09/03/2023 08:20

West Yorkshire here.
Snowing very lightly but the sky looks full of it. DDs college made the decision yesterday to close for 2 days and work remotely as a lot of the kids travel from quite far to attend. DS school is closed and lessons will be on TEAMS. We live a 5 minute walk away but they are worried that if the snow gets worse they will be trying to send everyone home by lunchtime.
Me and DH WFH so no issues there. Ocado due later but if they can’t get here we can walk to Aldi for some bits and do a proper shop at the weekend

cheshirecatssmile · 09/03/2023 08:25

East Cheshire it's coming down but doesn't appear to be sticking as blowing about more. But still early. Sky looks grey and heavy

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2023 08:26

Sensible school Hopping it's a nightmare trying to send kids home when parents can't get in and teachers are left looking after the few remaining children while desperate to get home themselves. (was a parent volunteer in this situation once!)

For those who want to see what's happening snow wise, here is a nice collection of webcams. www.jamesgphotography.co.uk/peak-district-webcams/

I especially like the Winking Man webcam as it's live and shows the road condition there. Looks like it's settled a bit on the road.

I like that one as well, OYBBK! 30 minutes or so ago, the road was clear and now it's got a slight covering.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2023 08:38

A plough just went through!

Oh no, this is not good. I've a tonne of work to catch up with and now I'm hypnotised by snow falling on a road.

OP posts:
DangerPigeon · 09/03/2023 08:58

That is quite hypnotic.
Few roads closed already...
