Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

Well Wales is full we're a wet sponge can't absorb much more rain. It's not if but when we get flooding.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2023 13:13

There's a news report from south Wales. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-64246302 about flooding and I see the Severn is being its problematic self.

Current wind and rain warnings also focused on the western side of the UK www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-01-12

Someone I know is about to move from Arizona to Cardiff. I think they're in for big surprise.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 13:21

that looks prettty heavy

justasking111 · 12/01/2023 13:25

NRW don't know their ass from their elbow according to them North Wales is hunky Dory. BUT they're working from home. Local FB PAGES say different.

Everyone is guessing until the media helicopters show the footage. Then they're playing catch up. The old riverside authority were accurate

RainbowZebraWarrior · 12/01/2023 20:16

Ok, we are used to wind on the NE coast of England, but what the heck is going on tonight? The wind has been gusty and kept us awake for the past 3 nights ot so, but this is something else. No forecast, no warning. BBC and Alexa just say "intermittent showers" and nothing else.

I know I've mentioned this before, @OhYouBadBadKitten but my Mum is terrified of wind, due to it lifting her extension roof off a few years ago.

Can you shed any light on this wind we are having here, Kitten or Gloria? We feel like we are being gaslighted here.

ListenLinda · 12/01/2023 20:27

The wind is absolutely ridiculous here in West Yorkshire tonight. It’s been pretty gusty the last few nights but it’s proper howling down the alley at the side of the house tonight.

GloriaSmud · 12/01/2023 20:43

RainbowZebraWarrior - think it might be down to the jetstream driving weather systems our way at the moment. Hopefully things will calm down as we go into next week (although it's then forecast to get colder!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2023 21:24

Rainbow the met office don't warn for wind speeds, rather they warn about potential impacts. So if it isn't likely to result in issues such as multiple trees coming down or transport disruption, it isn't warned about.

I keep being woken up too pre dawn by wind gusting and shifting a couple of loose tiles that need looking at. Driving me a bit nuts combined with the constant rain.

Weather models are starting to look quite interesting for some snow and cold next week. Hard to imagine after the recent weeks.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64253800 flood impacts.

The media are printing pictures of floodwaters here in Wales. Still waiting for NRW to report it

crosspusscrossstitcher · 13/01/2023 01:45

DH woke me up to tell me it was windy...I might have to do some heavy landscaping to the patio 🤦‍♀️⛏

He woke you up to tell you that?! Wtf.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2023 08:57

It looks like many areas even in southern england will see snow next week from Monday.

Monday is marginal, with rain, sleet or snow for those who see precipitation but as we go through Monday night into Tuesday, the temperatures cool further and snow where there is precipitation becomes much more likely. Upper air temperatures are very conducive for snow.

Some significantly icy conditions are possible, especially where roads are currently flooded.

It looks like a pretty short lived cold spell at present, so for next week, winter returns.

Think I'd prefer a bit of snow now this weather is getting me down now.

TokyoSushi · 13/01/2023 11:19

Snow would definitely be preferable for me to this relentless dark and rain!

And more rain and wind warnings I'm afraid, before the cold weather arrives. www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-01-13

They're firming up the cold snap then

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2023 17:03

Xcweather showing lots of snow for London on Monday <cries>

Kitten what do you think?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2023 21:49

I think it's unlikely Emma. While GFS is going for that scenario, it's unsupported by other models.

Snow showers are possible next week for many and it certainly will be cold with a nasty ice risk, given the state of flooded roads at present.

It looks like the south will at last start to dry out and calm down some.

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2023 21:59

Thanks Kitten
I've got to be in many places next week and it's non negotiable (work)

I took the advice upthread and ordered some non slip socks to put on outside boots. Just really hope it's not an ice rink like last time.

justasking111 · 14/01/2023 22:47

Any more rain in Wales we'll be floating off across to Ireland 🙈

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2023 09:37

Met Office have plenty of snow and ice warnings out mostly for northern Scotland over the next few days.

In EnglandI think it's possible there may be some snow overnight in the highest parts of the Downs in Sussex and Kent.

Then the next main chance for snow is in southern central and SE areas for tuesday when light snow might arrive by around lunchtime.
