Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

@OhYouBadBadKitten thanks yes will be going equipped!

Furries · 03/01/2023 04:02

@OhYouBadBadKitten - thank you for all your posts and threads. Always appreciated.

Im hoping for “Goldilocks” weather this year. Just the right amount of sun, win, rain etc.

Wishful thinking, but it’s worth a try!

Happy New Year to all.

Judelawsnanny · 03/01/2023 23:19

Have you seen the latest news on Europe's ski resorts? I find it so alarming. Warmest January all over the continent

Msgrieves · 03/01/2023 23:23

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2023 21:07

I agree Colouring Europes winter heat wave is extremely alarming. It isn't hyperbole to say that this is unprecedented. Our weather and climate are truly broken now.

How many years have they been keeping records for?

Msgrieves · 03/01/2023 23:24

I'm not being antagonistic, I genuinely don't know.

A few years ago they reopened the ski slopes in June due to unseasonable snow

colouringindoors · 04/01/2023 00:46

@Msgrieves good question, I didn't either. Answer is over 100 years depending on location in Switzerland.

But there is conclusive data showing dramatic warming across the world since industrial revolution, but especially in last 30 years.

colouringindoors · 04/01/2023 00:48

@Judelawsnanny me too. Records are being broken by significant margins - like the NW USA heat dome last year broke records by over 4 degrees. US rainfall in some parts this week has broken all records.

It's a good question Smile In the UK the CET has been continuously recorded since 1659. I think that's the olderest continuous record, but may be wrong. By 1781 the Societas Meteorologica Palatina was formed which was an international society predominately based in Europe that recorded observations across the network. That implies other countries would have been recording data by then. I guess the answer depends varies some for each individual country.

However, from a climate change point of view, we refer to climate records starting in 1880. This is because it is considered that this is when a globally widespread reliable network and set of records was established.

On a different matter, flooding is becoming a concern, especially in the west. If you live near a waterway please keep an eye on the Environment Agency flood alerts.

Oh well then that's fine then, climate change isn't a thing, I'll stop worrying shall I? 😒

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/01/2023 15:58

I think justasking was pointing out the brokenness of our climate, or that weather can be really unseasonably odd on top of the background of climate change.

If you've seen the beast from the east rubbish in the papers again over the past couple of days, there is no sign of an imminent SSW or of somehow the recent extreme cold in the States transferring magically over here. The weather looks pretty much the same as it is at.the moment, mild with wet and wild periods in the south and colder with wet and wild periods in the north and especially Scotland.

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten I was pointing out the vagaries of the climate.

Rain and wind here and my tumble dryer went kaput on Monday first load in, second in the washing machine. First load didn't dry in the conservatory after two days so now on radiators. Second load now in conservatory. I really need a clothes horse. I've turned into a 50s housewife only it's a log burner now instead of an open fire.

At least we have wind for our windfarms again. Mind you our offshore one according to the guys that maintain them are deteriorating much faster than anticipated rotting from the inside out. The sea is a cruel mistress

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2023 14:22

Are they really rotting Justasking? Bugger! That's one of the issues, there is a lot of innovation to create alternatives to carbon produced power, but that leads to unforeseen issues that need to be worked out. We will get there, but its expensive, though needed.

In utter astonishment I managed to get a set of washing dry on the line yesterday and a second set is drying today, thanks to the wind. Feels like I am gambling with rogue showers.

In the mean time, the Met Office have declared 2022 to be the hottest year on record in the UK and modelling suggests that by the end of the century it could be this hot every year. www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/press-office/news/weather-and-climate/2023/climate-change-drives-uks-first-year-over-10c

Yes they're rotting. Funny thing sea water. Like a boat with electrics requires sacrificial anodes. Or that too will fall apart. They've been taken by surprise by the speed of decay. They should have asked the sailors not relied on computerized models.

In happier news we're finally moving on wave power in Anglesey

amp.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/24/could-angleseys-tidal-energy-project-drive-a-new-energy-revolution

There's been so much resistance over the years. A Dutch mussel company financing the objectors. But having destroyed the mussel beds they've lost interest now

colouringindoors · 05/01/2023 18:20

BBC news covered the hottest year record. They said that without climate change last year's heat would only occur once every 500 years. The average temperature record would have been broken by more if it hadn't been for the extreme cold in December. Depressing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2023 20:59

That's exciting news Justasking It's been mooted for a long time that one.

Quite a feisty looking squall line due to cross North Yorkshire in the next hour or so.

We were whipped by the very top of that squall line on your screenshot at 8.50pm last night. (NE Coast of England) It was brief, but the noise was scary. Cat ran and hid under the bed. Me and Mum both texted each other as it took us a few minutes to work out what the sudden noise was (crazy wind and lashing rain)

We are back to annoying but typical levels of wind now. Which we seem to have here on the coast 90% on the time.

hoochyhag · 06/01/2023 10:01

Oo thanks for the heads up about the squall Kitten my washing is currently about to take off from the line Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/01/2023 14:59

I do like a good squall. Grin

Alas, more rain warnings. For the SW and parts of south Wales, particularly so on the western side of hilly ground.

I'm glad the sub zero temps have gone but it would be nice to have some dry days to clear the laundry pile.

TheRubyRedshoes · 07/01/2023 17:37

South East near London and we've got an extremely feisty wind here!
