Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

Ice warnings out for today now. As we go through the next few days, these probably won't be the only areas to be affected.

Thanks for the advice as always Kitten. Last nights wind seemed particularly bad. It blew my heavy Lutyens bench over which has never happened before. Must have been a directional thing.

I've also sent off for some of the over shoes. The prolonged spell of icy earlier in December was treacherous. I'm planting some bulbs out later today (better late than never!) I will collect enough logs for the week from the wood shed and grit my path to the car before sunset.

The sunshine here is beautiful at the moment, and my gang of goldfinches are chirping away in the front garden. Yesterday the starlings returned to their nest in the eaves outside my bedroom window - very early for them. The hellebores are blooming, and my willow tree is adorned with it's silken fluffy buds. There is a frisson of Spring being just around the corner. Of course I know that winter still has a say for a long while yet.

As an aside the few times we've been between rain and gales the bird song has been amazing. They must be hungry. Our bird feeder has crashed out a few times if it stays up it fills with water.

Anyone in in marine maps. There's little fishing in the Irish sea. The fish heads out into deep waters in this kind of weather. Faroe Islands and Iceland are busy

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2023 14:13

This will cause some consternation for some!

Met Office warning about the potential I highlighted earlier.

It only seems to be the met office giving snow though. I've checked BBC Ventusky they're giving light flurries mainly. We'll have to wait and see I guess

crosspusscrossstitcher · 15/01/2023 17:33

BBC rarely get it right for us (Cheshire).
Met Office is normally closer...although never as accurate as OYBBK, especially if there's a storm or squall line. Grin

Overnight is tricky! It will all depend on things like how heavy the rain falls and whether any dry air gets pulled in and where all of this happens. I still think it is most likely over the higher parts of the Downs.

Tuesday might see more prolonged snow along the south coast. Where and when? Models show different solutions. But its something to keep an eye on.

@crosspusscrossstitcher that made me laugh a lot!

Farmers forecast concurs @OhYouBadBadKitten 🤣

EmmaEmerald · 15/01/2023 19:56

Temperature has plummeted very fast here.

Smoky1107 · 15/01/2023 20:28

I live on the edge of the north downs, getting my train into work tmrw could be tricky as even if no snow here if there's any further down the line it'll delay me! Luckily I can work from home but it'll be a wait and see for the morning I think

HaroldeVwilliam · 15/01/2023 20:42

Checking in, south east and temperature dropping here but I don't think we are due snow

AlphaAlpha · 15/01/2023 21:38

Meteoradar looks interesting from midnight onwards (I'm mid Sussex!)

SW London here - I don't think we're forecast to get any snow, but it's noticeably colder this evening. We went out at 7.30pm and came back at 9.15pm and it was really chilly.

nannynick · 15/01/2023 21:45

The recent weather is causing problems in some places.

Hook near Basingstoke has seen a railway embankment collapse. This will impact rail services for several days this week, on the Southampton to Waterloo via Basingstoke line.

I'm also in london and .i have a feeling your "chilly" is my "shit freezing" 😂

BIWI · 15/01/2023 21:51

Well, I did have my Big Coat on! Grin

nannynick · 15/01/2023 21:52

Noticed a lot more potholes in roads the last few days. It has not been icy so is it the rain getting under the tarmac and eroding the road structure below that causes the pothole?

More rain on the radar, so river levels may go up over the next day or so. Some localised flooding perhaps at the usual points... in my area some streams flood the roads in winter, especially one near Fairoaks airport (Surrey).

Snow may come this week but I suspect it may be mostly rain. As night temperatures drop, ice maybe an issue for my early morning drives to work. Are icy conditions likely?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2023 21:59

Icy conditions are very likely nannynicks.

Last night went to a big party on a farm. We were mostly indoors in an old stone building but food was served outside. I'd worn many layers, thick socks, rubber soled boots. Came home had a cup of tea. Swear I was frozen to the bone and my back was killing me. Went to bed in long nightie and a massive fluffy dressing gown under a duvet, thick bedspread and throw. How do they cope in places like Russia -25 yesterday 🥶🥶

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2023 06:49

That sounds like a very ambitious party for January.

Lots and lots of transport disruption for much of southern England today with multiple flooding incidents. Snow in parts of Kent and sussex too. Check before you travel.

Seeing flood reports on Facebook and Waze. Chobham:"car stranded in water between RSPCA and Carthouse Lane and it is impassable."

River levels: www.gaugemap.co.uk/#!Map (Not live data. Often delayed by many hours).
