How is winter looking?

Will it be properly cold?
Will there actually be a frost?
I've not had the winter duvet out in an age, just didn't need it last winter.

It's been pretty cold where I am - loosely I'll say rural NW England - for the last 4 weeks. Certainly colder than usual in November. My car has needed de-icing more often just in the last 4 weeks than it did the whole of last winter!
We had awful fog last weekend, two whole days of freezing fog that didn't lift at all during the day. It's been about 20 years since I remember fog like that here.

It's cold again tonight but milder weather is moving in overnight and is forecast for the rest of the week. It will be very welcome as I'm already dreading my heating bill this year.

Just looked at OYBBK's link and looks as if I'm just on the edge of the area forecast for that fog for tonight and tomorrow. Fun drive to work tomorrow.

Perihelion · 05/12/2016 23:29

Gloria I think OYBBK always speaks sense, however I hope DD does change her clothes as activities/getting soaked opportunities include, kayacking, caving and gorge walking.... but at least the heavy rain seems to be holding off till Friday. But the temp rises to possibly 12C on Wednesday and 40mph gusts.Forecast has been all over the place.

Bag wise, settled on a monster rucksack which was probably the same size and weight as DD Grin

De-iced my car twice today.....

the forecast accuracy is crackers at present!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2016 07:09

GFS (and other models to some extent) has been really struggling and the weather up to the middle of the month looks much less active and more settled, with little incursion by the atlantic. Then mid month, blocking looks increasingly likely to set up with cold dry weather settling in. No real snow showing, but lots of proper cold. Fingers crossed!

When it's foggy and cold, why is there that smell of wood smoke in the air? It's not wood fires afaik!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2016 09:17

I think there may be wood fires in the area, but an inversion layer stops it from dispersing further into the atmosphere so it stays closer to the ground.

nannynick · 06/12/2016 12:09

Fog is lingering in West Surrey. Wonder what that means for tonight - be the same, thicker fog or maybe the sun will appear this afternoon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2016 13:20

nanny nick, I doubt you'll see sun. Going to either remain foggy, or lift a little to leave thick gloom. Hopefully the sun will be back by Sunday. Even though the temps are a bit warmer outside, house is much colder without the solar input.

I am flying from Gatwick to Orlando on the 20th and I keep dreaming that it snows so we can't fly. Please tell me there's no chance?!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/12/2016 01:39

-16 and snow here today

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2016 08:01

brrr Moose! 10c here!!!

GFS is being all stupid - it clearly hasnt got a clue at the moment. In fact there is no model consistency between any models. Tits - I think you should be ok though.

BiddyPop · 07/12/2016 09:13

We're forecast to get to 15c here! It certainly is warmer today - I am only in a light dress and had my coat open on the commute, and I am still sweating!

Perihelion · 07/12/2016 13:05
