How is winter looking?

DesolateWaist · 16/09/2016 23:33

Will it be properly cold?
Will there actually be a frost?
I've not had the winter duvet out in an age, just didn't need it last winter.

For us winter is looking like sweating our tits off in 35-40 Celsius, with Christmas in the pool and New Year under the warm, firework-filled Aussie sky...😌 But alas, only for 3 weeks, when we will be rejoining the rest of you blocks of ice and feeling all the colder for it 😭 I. HATE. WINTER. 😠

SilverGiraffe7 · 20/11/2016 08:03

I don't get how they can think that's actual information - my 4 year old could predict that it's either going to be cold or it's not!!

I hate hate hate driving when it's icy on the roads so all I'm looking out for is if/when that's coming!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2016 08:47

the thing is weather forecasting is all about probabilities and the contingency planners forecast is very specifically designed to help local councils, airports, and other infrastructure providers plan, by quoting the probability of each weather scenario. It's not actually designed for the general public to use. Long term forecasting is still an emerging science and at the moment it simply isn't possible for them to be more accurate. The only alternative would be for them to say nothing at all. But if they did that then it would give infrastructure providers no chance of any sort of intelligent prep.

I wish I had a stockpile of prosecco. I have got a cupboard full of Heinz tomato soup and I'm happy to share. DD opened the cupboard, took one look at all the tins and asked if I'd either been watching too much Walking Dead or if MN are forecasting a bad winter. Grin

In other news the Netweather Santa shaker is back.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2016 14:26

yay!!
and Grin at the soup.
I've been happily admiring my log stash and dh has been sorting out our homemade christmas beer. We are ready!

SideOrderofChip · 20/11/2016 18:16

My feeling is this winter is going to be cold and stormy. Very cold. And very stormy

BiddyPop · 20/11/2016 20:46

Well, it was officially 3 degrees at 2pm today, but there was still ice floating on top of fresh water in the hull of a plastic boat at that stage (in shadow but on a trailer not in the sea).

The dinghy racing went ahead, it was the first time I saw EVERYONE wearing hats (lots of the adults don't bother!).

Sallycinnamum · 20/11/2016 20:57

I work in an industry where weather forecasting is really important and we'be already had a planning meeting where we were advised to be prepared for very cold weather this winter.

This is the London suburbs by the way, not the wilds of Scotland.

I can't remember having such severe weather warnings for the winter, not even in the years I worked for the NHS.

It remains to be seen of course if our weather forecasters are right of course!

Perihelion · 21/11/2016 11:39

I think the last couple of nights, parts of Scotland have already had overnight temperatures lower than all of last winter. Back in Edinburgh after my Fife weekend and it's currently 0C and the ground's just about frozen and some freezing fog/mist earlier......has made the trees and bushes look very pretty.

dementedma · 21/11/2016 19:35

Very hard frost here in Central Scotland this morning and hasn't got above freezing all day! Now very windy!

user1471451684 · 21/11/2016 19:38

First real snowfall here last night, from now there will be snow on the ground until mid April!

Fantasticmissfoxy · 21/11/2016 19:47

It was down to minus 10 here last night (NE Scotland) and hasn't got above -2 all day. It still, clear and frosty and I love it! A cold / snowy winter instead of a wet one would be lovely, and be excellent for the Scottish ski resorts to get another good winter - incredible snow in the alps already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/11/2016 21:36

that's interesting Sally.

Plenty of snow over parts of Wales too.

nannynick · 23/11/2016 10:36

From a couple of days ago - waterfall icing up. Could this be a sign of things to come - colder winter than we have had over the past few years?

How is winter looking?
BiddyPop · 23/11/2016 11:23

There is snow on the hills outside out city - very white on the top from our office window. Usually, even in the depths of January, it is a speckled covering - so that says how cold it is already. I actually wore my ski jacket to work Mon/Tues as it was so cold and bitter wind added to it - I don't think I had that out all last winter as my "winter coat" (Isobelle Joules, Joules Elisabeth....something like that - a good Scandanavian brand so waterproof coat to my knees with some extra lining) was sufficient but it is already proving to be a very different year!

I've decided - I am getting my snowboots out of the storage unit tomorrow night (late opening - no time at the weekend or in the daytime opening hours at present), just in case. And I am GOING to put together the winter car box for my car at the weekend too - I have the box, and most of the bits, I just need to put them together and then into the car.

SideOrderofSprouts · 23/11/2016 13:05

For Jersey evryone is saying its very cold already. The berries are huge up at the yard and the ponies are very fluffy

Perihelion · 24/11/2016 23:20

Proper cold and frost all day ( in the shade ) for the last few days in Edinburgh. Along with blue skies Grin
Biddy I'm enjoying all my winter gear without sweating after a couple of miles and actually needed a fleece under my beast of a coat when I went out to get DD this evening.
Am now waiting to see what the weather brings for the first full week in December as DD has her P7 outdoor residential that week......nice timing school, but at least no midges Hmm

SideOrderofSprouts · 25/11/2016 16:44

Supposed to be very cold here Monday tuesday

notsomanky · 26/11/2016 10:46

DM has said the frost has not lifted in days in Renfrewshire.

Here in Manchester we have had our first frost in ages. DH has just had to scrape the car.

It is beautiful though. I love crisp clear mornings like this!

Although I am off out to watch DS1 referee a football match soon, so I will not be so happy when I can't feel my feet!

Bravas · 26/11/2016 19:04

I live south Manchester and the ground frost has stayed all day today. We've had to scrape the cars 4 times already, that's 3 times more than the whole of last winter.

leesmum · 27/11/2016 07:58

I left for work yesterday morning at 6.45am, the walk to the bus stop was so beautiful there was a clear sky and the moon's reflection was making my street look like someone had poured white glitter all over it ❄❄❄❄

BiddyPop · 28/11/2016 05:15

DH had a lot of cold and frost on the ground all weekend in Cork, but in Dublin we had cloud and temps around 10 degrees. No ice in the boat this weekend at the Den. So it was nice doing backwoods cooking outdoors with the Cubs.

The forecasted calm though didn't materialise as DD had quite tough conditions sailing - not sure of the force but rough enough water to make me say fresh breeze or even strong breeze. Lots of boats going over. Including DD on the very last turn of the race. But she came up still grinning (training the day before had needed paddles as there was no wind at all!).

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 28/11/2016 06:03

Greetings from Canada! Winter is late here. My Facebook posts show we had at least a foot of snow on the ground two years ago and it was -26 this time last year. Currently 11pm and -4 with about an inch of snowfall today.

GloriaSmud · 28/11/2016 11:57

'Tis looking settled for the next week or two, lots of overnight frosts and chilly days ~ we're forecast a 'high' of 4C tomorrow.
Ice scrapers and thermals at the ready everyone!

SideOrderofSprouts · 28/11/2016 13:29

gloriousmud does that include the Channel Islands? I do hope so!
