How is winter looking?

Will it be properly cold?
Will there actually be a frost?
I've not had the winter duvet out in an age, just didn't need it last winter.

I do feel for the met office - although it does show it is more likely to be colder than usual, it doesn't say it will probably be colder than usual. But everyone is so excited about the prospect. If it doesn't happen guess who they will blame....

Been right proper cold though for november this weekend though. Wore my thermals for the fireworks last night and by heck this evening when I popped out, it felt like winter with very cold rain and wind.

Been sorting out our wood. It seems that we had stashed it in quite a lot of places hidden under bushes over the past couple of years when seasoning it! A really good supply. So I'm ready :)

This year I'm also going to look into winter tyres for my little car. I think it might be worth the investment.

Snow gates closed at Tomintoul earlier.

Winter is definitely here!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/11/2016 21:10

It does look reassuringly cold to our east too :)

misson · 06/11/2016 21:35

I have no idea about forecasting weather but berries reflect previous conditions and birds migrate based on previous and current conditions. Neither berries or birds can predict the weather.

Am very excited about the prospect of cold. We haven't bought a sledge since the last snows. Ds2 is 4. I will go shopping for his sledge this week. Will have to do it in secret though or the anticipation will be ridiculous!

BaggyCheeks · 06/11/2016 21:52

Winter is definitely early this year. 2010/11 was the really bad winter for us - The snow fell on the 28th/29th November and stayed until February (east coast Scotland). I still remember the Thunder-snow storm I sat through in Dundee!

Not sure if anyone has come across Windy Wilson on Facebook before, his forecasts seem fairly reliable, though he doesn't tend to explain too much. He's hedging early bets on a 2010-alike year.

The Dave the Weather link is fascinating!

There is a very definite shift over the past week.

It was still warm for the season last weekend. But cooler this week to downright COLD this weekend - but great clear bright skies for starwatching on our overnight hike/hostel adventure with Cubs, and the wood was sooo dry for the campfire it was great for marshmallow toasting and very little smoke!!

This morning, it was 4 degrees by the sea, and there was frost on the car yesterday morning in the mountains. I actually got to use 2 pairs of thermals! (1 for Saturday, the other yesterday) - last year, I think I used 2 pairs all winter. I need to remember to layer up better for work again too.

GloriaSmud · 07/11/2016 11:08

According to netweather, some places could see some wintry stuff tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 07/11/2016 11:24

Metoffice have issued a weather warning for snow in some areas Xmas Smile

InMySpareTime · 07/11/2016 12:28

Fingers firmly crossed that we actually get snow in Manchester tomorrow, we're usually the last to get a glimpse of the white stuff!

DoItTooJulia · 07/11/2016 12:44

Place marking while we wait for a snow watch thread

Fingers in ears & singing Lalalala & praying that you are all wrong Grin

BaggyCheeks · 07/11/2016 13:52

It looks like the snow will miss me tomorrow, we're only 90m ASL so probably freezing rain/sleet. Going to be freeeeeezing though! Need to get DD mittens today!

MadisonAvenue · 07/11/2016 13:55

Weather warning for possible snow in Staffordshire for Tuesday into Wednesday.
I hate snow! Or rather the thick ice it turns into. I hate ice!

magimedi · 07/11/2016 14:16

MadisonAvenue - You are my friend. I hate snow, ice, winter & temps below about 24C!! I live in the wrong country.

megletthesecond · 07/11/2016 14:33

I don't mind snow, although we're usually last to get it in the south. As long as it waits until I've tidied the allotment up for the winter though.

MadisonAvenue · 07/11/2016 14:47

magimedi we were on holiday in California until a week ago - you can imagine what a shock to the system it was coming back to frosty mornings and car windows that need scraping!Sad

magimedi · 07/11/2016 14:59

Not nice, madison. I am escaping some of this winter & going to forrin parts for 4 weeks. I can't wait.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 07/11/2016 16:12

I dont care how cold it is, but Id like to have as little snow as possible. I live in the sticks and have just been offered a new job. I dont want to start somewhere to only turn round early on to have to ring in cos I can't get in.

Apart from work reasons cold, crisp and dry would be lovely.

notsomanky · 07/11/2016 21:26

Very cold here in Manchester. Not mentioned the S word to the manky tribe. We are disappointed too often!

nannynick · 07/11/2016 22:01

No chance of S where I am, least I doubt it will get to Surrey.

Waiting for first S picture from my mum - in Aberdeenshire. Plenty of sleet, no S yet.

GloriaSmud · 08/11/2016 06:37

-1.8C here (Leicester) at the moment. No snow forecast later, just a lot of rain. Sad

PrancerForHoney · 08/11/2016 06:43

It was -2 here yesterday morning. Today it's dead on Zero. Snow is forecast for today. Fingers crossed here as I love snow.

megletthesecond · 08/11/2016 09:27

Hampshire - neighbours pond was frozen over. DD wore a coat.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/11/2016 09:29

sorry about the lack of snow forecasting. Bit preoccupied with a certain election going on. Normal service will resume soon Grin

GloriaSmud · 08/11/2016 10:22

Rain band showing up nicely here.
Our temperature's risen and we've reached the dizzy heights of 3.7C.
