stormy weather forecast for Weds 14th/thurs 15th

I think that this weeks weather now needs its own thread. Can I first apologise for not creating a separate thread for the Scottish twin storms. Although I was posting forecasts on a general weather thread, real life has conspired to give me less weather watching time than usual.

So anyway, as ever with these systems the details are not yet tied down. Models are coming up with a range of depths of the low pressure of between 945hpa (and filling as it comes on shore) - 968hpa. It looks certain that a deep low pressure will cross the UK weds/thurs and that at the very least some areas will see gales. Worst case scenario is storm force winds.

At the moment the areas I personally think most at risk is Wales, the Midlands and perhaps southern England too.

I'll do my best to update when I can.

met office warnings

I'm in East Yorkshire. Fairly calm now, but windy last night. We were forecast very strong winds later today, but we are no longer covered by a Met office warning. However, looking at accuweather and bbc weather site, we are still forecast strong winds (Accuweather says up to 70 mph). So I'm wondering why the yellow warning been lifted? Slightly confused....

kippersmum · 15/01/2015 10:07

Well that was a windy night, even by our local standards. Windier than ever here now after a brief lull. We have got 80mph gusts this afternoon, I'm wondering where I can walk the dog! Still, at least it isn't raining :)

GloriaSmud · 15/01/2015 10:51

A windy night here (Leicester) ~ highest gust was 24mph just after midnight (bin day here so lots of rubbish/recycling/bins blown over this morning.) Rain ~ 6.3mm (in the last 24 hours) and the minimum pressure was 980.8 at 2.23am.
Hope everyone managed to get through the night OK.

Perihelion · 15/01/2015 12:01

Windy in Edinburgh, but not brutal, gusts of about 60mph and the Forth Bridge is open only to cars. Pressure is 962hpa here.

The centre of the low is currently 945hpa, which is exactly what OYBBK had it as in the OP Grin

WeatherWatchingWitch · 15/01/2015 12:09

Well, still very wild here - pressure was down at 957 but is now creeping back up to 959 and the sky is a bit brighter even though the gusts are very strong and still raining. Temperature is falling from 6deg at 10am down to 3 deg now. Hoping it will get colder but brighter.

Yes OYBBK very confused about the Met Office as Met Eireann had warnings last night for all of Ireland according to DH.

No damage. Our house gets battered all the time so anything that is wreckable would be long gone :o

helzapoppin2 · 15/01/2015 12:20

North Yorkshire. I didn't notice much last night. It's a bit blowy now. Won't speak too soon. Don't want to tempt fate!

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/01/2015 13:20

Really blowy here. And grey.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 15/01/2015 15:35

Its been very windy here today, the winds have died down a bit from earlier when a gust blew my gate onto my arm.

HesterShaw · 15/01/2015 15:45

Fantastic walk at the coast just now - the sea is HUGE and bright blue in the shards of sunlight. I love winter wildness. As long as it doesn't cause powercuts and so on of course, like the three day one we had last year!

WeatherWatchingWitch · 15/01/2015 17:28

Pressure at 969 but still wreaking havoc with my sinuses Sad Still the odd big gust of wind but calm compared to earlier.

kippersmum · 15/01/2015 17:35

Wind slowly starting ease off slightly, should be down to a F8 for this evening. No damage here, like WeatherWatchingWitch we get battered by storms on a regular basis so anything not windproof is long gone :)

However it was bin day today & I nearly got pulled down the road by my bin!

Ginfox · 15/01/2015 18:31

Yellow weather warning came into force at 5pm for us (i think) but it's been a very calm day, and the wind didn't really pick up until 4ish. presumably a sudden drop in pressure?

Getting noisy outside but nothing unusual so far. Main concern here is for all the poor folks with patched up roofs from last storm. Hope this doesn't undo the repairs. Apparently the insurance assessors are working flat out just now.

WeatherWatchingWitch · 16/01/2015 11:00

Very wild overnight, the wind was loud enough to wake us especially when it hailed. A brief but vicious blizzard this morning but it's sunny now if freezing cold!
