stormy weather forecast for Weds 14th/thurs 15th

I think that this weeks weather now needs its own thread. Can I first apologise for not creating a separate thread for the Scottish twin storms. Although I was posting forecasts on a general weather thread, real life has conspired to give me less weather watching time than usual.

So anyway, as ever with these systems the details are not yet tied down. Models are coming up with a range of depths of the low pressure of between 945hpa (and filling as it comes on shore) - 968hpa. It looks certain that a deep low pressure will cross the UK weds/thurs and that at the very least some areas will see gales. Worst case scenario is storm force winds.

At the moment the areas I personally think most at risk is Wales, the Midlands and perhaps southern England too.

I'll do my best to update when I can.

It does look like the central pressure will drop to about 945hpa which actually was what GFS forecast. Will have a look at my station.

I'm a loooong way from the centre and down at 995 from a high of 1009 at lunch time.

Is that giant scary circle thing coming towards us? Shock

It's definitely getting stronger here (winds) - it quite often seems to be worse overnight.

xcweather wind map

Click on the map where you are interested and it will bring up the pressure in a box on the left side. If you click on earth it brings up a big box and you can toggle to what you want to see, wind is fun right now but I love the waves one, very chilled.

I think we are getting our band of very windy wind right now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2015 22:35

Remember that the numbers in the table are mean wind speeds not gusts.

Very cool Lost - didn't realise that about the toggling to see waves :)

Well, see you all on the other side!

JillJ72 · 14/01/2015 22:39

Oooo another weather website to bookmark - thank you!

Newbiecrafter · 14/01/2015 22:40

Very windy here. Our side gate has broken again and it's swinging and banging into the neighbours fence. Do says he'll deal with it tomorrow. It broke in last years weather and our makeshift repairs lasted for a year. Have no idea who I even call to get a new gate Confused

Lost thanks for that. I'm off to click. Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 14/01/2015 23:05

it does not sound too bad at the moment, but this is mainly due to the wind direction. we are forecast gusts up to force 8 we are not in the windiest part of thewind yet. tis cold though.

goodasitgets · 15/01/2015 00:48

So Heapey (Lancs) is a place that seems to have its own blinking weather system, there can be nothing 5 mins down the road and yet they will be under 6 inches of snow Confused
That scuppered doing anything with the horse, however it was sunny and lovely
Howling wind in preston tonight, can hear bins flying down the road

SpottyTeacakes · 15/01/2015 02:19

Dh has gone to rescue the bin....

SpottyTeacakes · 15/01/2015 02:42

Wasn't the bin it was the dc's play house. Surprised we still have power although it looks like it's been off at some point

meglet · 15/01/2015 06:59

bloody hell. what was that last night. I daren't look at my fence.

meglet · 15/01/2015 07:01

spotty - I heard bins going over last night. I think north Hampshire got a battering.

youarekiddingme · 15/01/2015 07:06

South hampshire got a battering too. Heard some very dodgy sounds of things being blown down roads. Grateful it's still too dark to assess the damage! Leaving for work in half hour - not looking forward to it!

SpottyTeacakes · 15/01/2015 07:08

We're sussex so not far from you. About 3am it went quiet then it all started up again. I didn't sleep well

booface · 15/01/2015 07:23

Same here in West Kent, I'd drop off to sleep and then another huge gust of wind would batter the window. Waiting for it to get light to see if trampoline etc still in one piece! Hopefully worst is over for all our commutes/school drop offs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2015 07:35

It's taken me ages to get online this morning as a power surge took out my UPS - my internet and my weather station are on that so I've lost about 6 hours of data at the height of the storm :( However I'm grateful the ups was there to protect my equipment. Somewhat sleepless too with the wind, it wasnt a very bad storm, but it was quite lively.

will take a gander at whats been going on....

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2015 07:41

Ok, so peak gusts were 70mph along the south coast 50-60mph widespread inland. Still pretty lively in Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland. Finally the met office caught up with the weather up there and have issued warnings for today. I'm curious as to what held them back!

OP posts:
LostInWales · 15/01/2015 07:56

I'm quite new at following weather in depth si can I ask a stupid question? Is that (very beautiful on charts!) low pressure spot moving really slowly or do they all move at that speed?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2015 07:59

It is quite a slow moving storm, but if you think about it, its massive! It affected the whole of the uk.
You do get much speedier ones, think of the little ones that zip along the English channel.

OP posts:
MixenLane · 15/01/2015 08:17

I don't have a barometer but my neighbour has a little weather station and tells me pressure went down to 979 overnight.
It really didn't seem too bad last night. Today is bin collection day, and none in my road have been blown over.
We're expecting worse later today, during rush hour this evening especially. Geographically I'm in south Cheshire, but the Met Office calls the area around my village East Cheshire.

LostInWales · 15/01/2015 08:19

I haven't ever really thought properly about it before but now I've started looking at charts and venturing into new websites and looking at stuff, you are a gateway drug OYBBK Grin. I can't think of much better to obsess over! Yes though, it is massive, like a big ponderous elephant of a storm, or a very large lady doing an elegant waltz with her skirts all spread out. I need to get out more Blush

SpottyTeacakes · 15/01/2015 08:24

Dd's bus driver managed to drive through the river which has formed in the road to get here. I'm so grateful to her Smile it's only a mini bus and had it been a car there's no way she's have got through!
