stormy weather forecast for Weds 14th/thurs 15th

I think that this weeks weather now needs its own thread. Can I first apologise for not creating a separate thread for the Scottish twin storms. Although I was posting forecasts on a general weather thread, real life has conspired to give me less weather watching time than usual.

So anyway, as ever with these systems the details are not yet tied down. Models are coming up with a range of depths of the low pressure of between 945hpa (and filling as it comes on shore) - 968hpa. It looks certain that a deep low pressure will cross the UK weds/thurs and that at the very least some areas will see gales. Worst case scenario is storm force winds.

At the moment the areas I personally think most at risk is Wales, the Midlands and perhaps southern England too.

I'll do my best to update when I can.

OYBBK when you say 'the south' do you mean the actual south ost parts of england or do you mean places like Sussex and Hampshire? Or everything below the Midlands?

BobblesAndBells · 12/01/2015 07:28

Blowing a gale in N Wales, kept me awake most of the night

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 08:04

very briefly.
rough old day in Scotland expected today!!! warnings

Wednesday night into thursday still look very stormy - 70-80mph aouthern coast, 60mph inland. More later running very behind.

Sounds stormy here in Edinburgh. Noise from the wind woke me a few times last night.

LostInWales · 12/01/2015 08:24

The shed still stands . Need a bit of dry before weds to do final bit then I will proclaim myself a DIY goddess!

Right, my biggest conundrum is football training on Weds. My team love being out in the wind and rain, they think it's the most fun to be on the Astro turf in horizontal hail whilst I tether the smallest ones but are we talking dangerous to be out wind and rain weds evening or bracing fun makes your heart beat weather?

lordStrange · 12/01/2015 08:27

Already blowing a bluster here on SE coast. Have tethered the trampoline after it flew into the neighbour's garden recently Blush.

GloriaSmud · 12/01/2015 11:57

Ooo well done, Lost. I'm a little anxious about my honeysuckle archway in the back garden ~ it's wobbling all over the place at the moment and think it might need a bit of help to keep upright this week.
Re the football training ~ having had (an extremely amateur) look, it looks like the really strong wind and rain is supposed to hit between 6-9pm and the fact that Wales has just about everything the metoffice warns about Shock, if it's possible to call it off, it might be wise to (otherwise, I think everyone might need tethering!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 12:01

Well done Lost!
Fraid this is a flying visit. I'm so sorry, the weather is going to be horrendous and I seem to just have no time at all at the moment :(

updated warnings

can you make out which bit of yellow goes with which warning? I have no idea looking from the map.

Looking nasty for parts of NW scotland today - gusts to 80-90mph. Really wound itself up this low pressure. Sorry for those of you whose power is precarious. Couple it with a snow and ice warning that lasts until Wednesday!!! and its not very nice at all.

Snow for much of the higher ground in the north through til wednesday.

Further south, we have heavy rain along the south coast and now and ice for a good part of the west tomorrow

Wednesday, severe gales, snow, heavy rain, hail, lightning. Its all on the cards. Horrific day.

I promise I'll come back this evening for a proper synopsis. Ever so sorry that I'm being rubbish at the moment.

Can confirm the weather is a bit shite at times in Scotland today Grin. Only showers though, not constant rain.

Is it me, or has there been a lot of thunder and lightning around this winter?

Am completely ignoring the snow warnings, as was left totally disappointed the weekend's pathetic attempts at snow.....ended up letting DD and her pal stick a mattress on the stairs for and artificial sledge slope.

OYBBK I was like that with the warning map and then realised that if you click on a particular weather icon on the map, it puts a black line boarder around the included area......still think they could come up with a better way to represent it though. And no need to apologise, real life is more important Flowers

BlackeyedSusan · 12/01/2015 12:32

zooming in is possible as well on the weather map. helps to work out where the border is on the big map.

Wmids here. we have blustery rain here today.

Namelesswonder · 12/01/2015 12:41

Heavy snow forecast for Edinburgh tomorrow

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 12:42

That's helpful Peri :)

Just had a closer look and unfortunately you are looking at severe gales up in Scotland on thursday now as the low goes through.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 12:43

and I seem to be in an area that has gale, snow, ice and heavy rain warnings. Exciting! pity its this week!

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 12:43

oh and I think the met office are undercooking the wind estimates for the south coast - I think more like 80mph.

What are the chances of snow down south? Trying not to get my hopes up as they have forecast every possible weather for us, rain, wind, ice and snow.

oricella · 12/01/2015 12:52

Looks like the warnings have caught up with the weather then - no sign of improvement: wind, sleet, hail, rain, but there is the occasional break (even seen the sun!), power is on (knock on wood) and schools open

42notTrendy · 12/01/2015 13:22

Thanks again kitten. Really appreciate the time you take to keep us all informed.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2015 14:06

Hello all. There seems to be snow forecast for Worcestershire for tomorrow night. I did not ask for any and wish to complain. Sad

it is currently pouring with rain and although that's not great I prefer it.

pinkkoala · 12/01/2015 14:17

Any ideas what its looking like for northampton, today its windy and raining, but overheard warnings for tues, weds and thurs for snow, ice and gales. Can i be expecting this.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/01/2015 14:41

get wafting it further NE sparkling.... just a little bit further will do.

It is now raining heavily here in my part of the west mids. the sky is a browny grey and it really is too dark to see much inside. it looks like someone is hosing down our windows.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2015 14:47

it's a deal Susan.

Rain has stopped here, but it's really dark.

Peedie · 12/01/2015 14:48

Very, very windy here in W Fife. I was out at 1.30am chasing my bin down the street! The good news is that the sun is out!

SpottyTeacakes · 12/01/2015 14:57

Just wind and rain for us by the looks of things. Hopefully it'll stay that way!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 15:06

pinkoala - uncertain about snow I'm afraid. The rest yes.

Endler, depends where you are. Near the coast or on the eastern side? probably not. Towards the west or more central areas, possibly but don't expect it to be long lived.

Perihelion · 12/01/2015 15:53

Namelesswonder I'll believe heavy snow in Edinburgh when I'm building a snowman and sledging Grin
