stormy weather forecast for Weds 14th/thurs 15th

I think that this weeks weather now needs its own thread. Can I first apologise for not creating a separate thread for the Scottish twin storms. Although I was posting forecasts on a general weather thread, real life has conspired to give me less weather watching time than usual.

So anyway, as ever with these systems the details are not yet tied down. Models are coming up with a range of depths of the low pressure of between 945hpa (and filling as it comes on shore) - 968hpa. It looks certain that a deep low pressure will cross the UK weds/thurs and that at the very least some areas will see gales. Worst case scenario is storm force winds.

At the moment the areas I personally think most at risk is Wales, the Midlands and perhaps southern England too.

I'll do my best to update when I can.

As ever thanks Oybbk.

Hoping for snow. But not disruption. Contrary I know.

Roseformeplease · 11/01/2015 16:19

Thanks for all your good advice.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2015 17:12

You are both welcome.

Some snow would be nice, the models are not giving much hope for that.

Some indications that this could be a nasty event for the south as well as Wales.

Thank you OYBBK, I remember last time feeling very smug that I seemed like the only person round here ready for the storm! As it is I have just spent a joyful day repairing the shed roof with DS1 as it was starting to flap so I feel both smug at my preparedness and anxious that it will hold out in bad weather! I suppose it will at least be better than if I had done nothing Grin.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2015 17:51

Oh well done Lost! It is satisfying to be prepared!
We have learned that we can boil water on top of our wood burner recently. It's just a small thing, but given our power was blipping a couple of days ago in the strong winds, it's good to know I can keep us warm and supplied with hot drinks.

It's picked up again here (west Fife) in the last hour or two.! Very noisy wind. We've tiles off the roof from Thursday night and a roofer due tomorrow so I hope I calms down a bit so he can get up and sort the roof.

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2015 19:19

I was looking at some of the wind charts and was Shock at some of the winds forecast for the West and South coasts of Ireland ~ looks like they'll get a real battering too.

(Can I add for those lucky enough to have wood burners , that they can be used to make porridge. You have to be a bit careful not to leave it as if it gets too hot, it does tend to spill over (a lesson learnt from leaving porridge overnight on a narrowboat's woodburner and waking up to a scene that wasn't a lot different from the story of 'The Magic Porridge Pot!') but it is fairly successful made this way.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2015 19:45

Peedie tomorrow's wind warnings I'm sorry.

Friday caught me completely unprepared, I wasn't paying attention at all. Thanks for the heads up this week, I am in a very windy spot in south wales.

SpottyTeacakes · 11/01/2015 19:51

Thanks oybbk lets hope it's not too bad where people have already been hit.

42bunnytails · 11/01/2015 19:56

DH is twitching about this, much comparing of models and he took all the outside fairy lights down today. (It being the first decently warm, still non work, day he's had for the big ladder)

Must check we have petrol for the generator (pesky fish, humans can just about manage without power, fish can't!)

SpottyTeacakes · 11/01/2015 19:58

Oh. I just looked. Looks like we're going to have a wet week. If the road was flooded Wednesday I've got no hope of driving through anywhen this coming week have I?! At least we have supplies for if the power goes.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2015 20:01

I remember the hassle of power cuts with our aquarium and it was just a modest one. Had a little battery air thingy and wrapped up the aquarium in a blanket. They were stressful!
Spotty, it does look rather soggy I'm afraid.

(Btw, why is it darts on when I want to watch the into the volcano program? Grrr)

Endler32 · 11/01/2015 20:07

Hope it's not too bad Sad will make sure I do my food shop before we'd incase we get stuck.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 11/01/2015 20:47

Thanks for the warnings kitten. Also waiting for Kate Humble so I feel your pain. Grin

meglet · 11/01/2015 21:03

the darts has grown on me.

Our single snowflake forecast has gone now. wet week ahead now.

NameForReallyRandomStuff · 11/01/2015 21:16

Forecasting snow here for Oxfordshire, according to the BBC! Yay! Please tell me this is realistically going to happen?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2015 21:36

Name, first thing Wednesday?? It's possible.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2015 21:37

The darts was strangely fascinating, but I'm taping into the volcano as I'm on a no screens after 10pm (ish) to try and aid good sleep.

BobblesAndBells · 11/01/2015 22:04

Ooh thank you OYBBK.

Countryfile gave a hint of the chance of snow in Wales earlier... getting my hopes up.

So N Wales is looking windy for Weds then?

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 12/01/2015 02:58

Thanks for the new thread OYBBK, windy in Edinburgh again tonight.

LostInWales · 12/01/2015 06:12

Gusty night here on the W Wales coast, must be bad if it woke me because I am deaf as a post and take my HA's out to sleep Grin. Anxiously waiting for a bit of light to see the shed roof!

I'm jealous of your wood burner OYBBK, I have a diddy one for my canvas tent (and a portable carbon monoxide monitor of course!) and I love making a cuppa on it in my camping kettle. Slow job but very satisfying.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/01/2015 06:34

Wet and windy here in sussex.

GloriaSmud · 12/01/2015 06:57

Slightly breezy here (Leicester) and 8.9C.
For those travelling up in Scotland, the TrafficScotland website has a list of current incidents and weather conditions and Scotrail is here (except I'm finding their site quite slow this morning.) Edinburgh and Glasgow airports seem to be OK.

Hope everyone stays safe this week ~ it looks like it's going to be quite a week weatherwise.

GentlyBenevolent · 12/01/2015 07:07

Very very blustery in devon, overnight (sufficient to wake us up and stop us going back to to sleep) and now.
