stormy weather forecast for Weds 14th/thurs 15th

I think that this weeks weather now needs its own thread. Can I first apologise for not creating a separate thread for the Scottish twin storms. Although I was posting forecasts on a general weather thread, real life has conspired to give me less weather watching time than usual.

So anyway, as ever with these systems the details are not yet tied down. Models are coming up with a range of depths of the low pressure of between 945hpa (and filling as it comes on shore) - 968hpa. It looks certain that a deep low pressure will cross the UK weds/thurs and that at the very least some areas will see gales. Worst case scenario is storm force winds.

At the moment the areas I personally think most at risk is Wales, the Midlands and perhaps southern England too.

I'll do my best to update when I can.

Without giving too much info as it will out me...
Wednesday. Central London. How much rain?
School field trip to museum on foot and train.
Eek.
And it's the really little ones! My DC has a sensible coat but..... Worried mum alert.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2015 22:22

As ever, complete gratitude from me OYBBK

TheSkiingGardener · 12/01/2015 22:38

I'm a bit of a lurker OYBBK but just wanted to say thank you. Whenever we get a whiff of bad weather DH always asks what you think and you have always been the most accurate source we can find. Much appreciated.

youmakemydreams · 12/01/2015 22:38

Windy mixed day in the highlands today. Swing between glorious and blowing a hoolie. Got a wee smattering of snow lying now. Kids are hoping to wake up to a blanket covering me not so much. Power went out for an hour again today.

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 12/01/2015 22:54

Its the calm before the storm here. Supposed to be hitting over night tomorrow, lull wednesday day then f12 according to guernsey weather forecasting overnight wednesday-thursday!

SwedeDreams · 12/01/2015 22:57

Marking place and doing usual snowdance for London, well aware it's pointless.

Hope everyone isn't too badly affected by the more miserable bits of weather upcoming (sleet, nasty wind, bolts of bloody lightning).

BlackeyedSusan · 12/01/2015 23:54

It is quite nice in the w mids in the day bobbles... Are you sure he is of the right religious persuasion to enter Brum though?

BobblesAndBells · 13/01/2015 07:03

Thank you black, he's on his way to Brum now, coming back tomorrow. There are a few areas on the route that often catch the snow, so fingers crossed he's ok.

Haha yes we did laugh about the news and the thought that he might not be allowed in to Brum!! Wink

youarekiddingme · 13/01/2015 07:42

OYBBK what's the realistic forecast for snow tonight in Hampshire on Coast? Wondering how much preparation is sensible!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2015 07:50

Morning all!

So, plenty of snow for many in Scotland moving south through the day in to northern Ireland and then a wintry mix for northern England and Wales. By tonight snow in many parts of the West Midlands, moving across the Midlands (with perhaps a little escaping further east). It won't be snow everywhere though and some will see rain instead. Later on in the night even parts of the SE may see some snow, or at least a wintry mix of weather, more likely to be snow over hills including the Downs and Chilterns.

By tomorrow morning some central areas, including Oxford may see some decent lying snow. During the morning though the precipitation will recede to leave a sunny day - perhaps the brief calm before the storm. For many later in the day the snow will melt so carpe diem!

And on to the storm.By mid afternoon tomorrow blowy everywhere but especially western coastal areas.By early evening exposed western coastal areas could be seeing gusts touching 70mph. By late evening most will be seeing gusts around 60mph, with southern coastal areas gusting to around 75mph. These peak gusts should not last too long.

To me it looks like the latest forecast path has jigged a little further north, perhaps taking northern Ireland out of the very worst of the winds, gusting to 70mph tomorrow morning and the Glasgow region could see similar.

After the storm clears through it looks like we are moving into some colder air. Perhaps some more snow on Sunday, but that is a discussion to have in a couple of days...

youarekidding - I'd be putting more effort into preparing for the wind. Unlikely to see much if any snow.

WMids today has dawned bright and calm with a lovely crescent moon.

youarekiddingme · 13/01/2015 08:29

Thankyou - wind is fine as prepared for that always throughout winter!
Sounds daft but if snow likely
I'd get sledge out of she's at night - DS has hypotonia and is crap walking in icy/snowy conditions. Add in the asd his danger awareness isn't exactly top notch Grin

GloriaSmud · 13/01/2015 08:47

Temperature's dropped quite a bit here (Leicester) already ~ was 7.7C just after midnight and it's been dropping quite quickly since 6am ~ now 4.5C

OldBeanbagz · 13/01/2015 08:55

Watching with interest as DS is supposed to be travelling to an event with school tomorrow which is over an hour away (and quite remote).

youmakemydreams · 13/01/2015 09:04

Snow day where we are in the highlands. The dc were already out playing in it by the time the school closures were announced.
Not too bad I'm our wee town but we are in a little dip it will only be about a mile or two away on slightly higher ground that I can imagine it's pretty bad.

MooseyMoo · 13/01/2015 09:17

Oooh Oxford might get snow

Peedie · 13/01/2015 09:27

Snow showers in W Fife this morning!

hoochymama1 · 13/01/2015 09:35

Many thanks, OYBBK you are a sweetie..
Why, oh why, a thousand times why, do we always get wind on bin day,eh? Grin

NameForReallyRandomStuff · 13/01/2015 10:03

Snow for Oxford?????? OYBBK, I think I love you! You will make my children and me very very happy.

(Yes I do just about accept that you're not personally providing the snow, but I do feel as though this thread provides us with a direct line to the weather gods. Thank you OYBBK.)

PS: Just how bad is your kitten?

NameForReallyRandomStuff · 13/01/2015 10:57

Mind you, the Met Office seems to think it won't snow south of Oxford. Sigh.

LostInWales · 13/01/2015 11:04

Look! Had to turn back from my run to the nearest big town! There is a longer way there on lower ground but I'm waiting at home now to see if my sons school will be closing because it's quite high up in the hills.
