apologies if you've seen this info on a couple of threads but this week does look rather concerning weather wise - with the possible for repeats of more severe gales and I think it would be helpful for people to have an idea of what may be coming up.

It is looking a pretty concerning scenario this week: The storm system Monday/Tuesday looks potent for first the SW and then the north. Then Friday. A long way off but at the moment the storm looks stronger than last weeks. At the moment Scotland looks most at risk but the track is still uncertain. All I can say is be prepared and if your property has suffered damage then I would do your utmost to effect repairs asap.

calmer here, sunny -ish but cold :(

Ginfox · 13/12/2011 15:17

Wind steadily getting louder here (Dunfermline), with a bit of sleety rain. Went out at lunchtime and it was a bit of a battle with the buggy, but nothing major. Puffy I think it's due to really hit the central belt around rush hour.

Sw Scotland here, have just been out in car bringing dds home and it was scary! Very windy, could feel our car shaking, and some trees down on the road.

Lexilicious · 13/12/2011 15:58

Had some hail earlier near Watford. Lovely day otherwise - crisp and bright. Proper windy and rainy last night though. I was glad my wheely bins were in the side return.

Concerned a bit about the snow risk on higher ground Thurs/Fri. I work on top of a hill in the Chilterns and need to get away easily to make it for childcare pickup. Will be watching this thread closely then!

moonmother · 13/12/2011 16:14

Had all weathers here in South Bedfordshire, gusty winds and heavy rain overnight.

Blowy this morning, rain which turned into quite a heavy snow shower at lunchtime.

Just walked home in rain,hail/graupel (not sure which) then snow.

jgirlmummy · 13/12/2011 16:40

is it just me or is anyone else freaked out by the wind in edinburgh just now...it sounds a lot worse than last week to me but maybe it sounds a lot worse than it actually is...?

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 13/12/2011 16:53

Thursday/Friday storm is back on according to the 12Z GFS Xmas Hmm It has it as a deep low with the centre across southern UK which would give France the strong winds and parts of the Pennines northwards probable snow.

wish the models would hurry up and come to a consensus!!!!

winnybella · 13/12/2011 16:58

On Meteox it seems there'll be strong winds for France.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 13/12/2011 17:13

Im sure these winds are as strong, if not stronger, than last weeks! All the bridges round here are closed, so commuters have a very long journey home tonight :(

PuffOfSmoke · 13/12/2011 17:25

Winds definitely stronger today than last week, DH just out with the dog and nearly got hit by someone's ariel coming off their roof! Shock Snow hasn't come to much, its not getting the chance to lie as its being blown about so much!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 13/12/2011 17:57

Edinburgh seems to be gusting to 60mph, which is down below Friday's readings. I wonder if it is the direction of the wind this time, or perhaps the gusts are more prolonged? Certainly will be testing anything that only just survived last week.

Mum says the wind today feels worse thanlast week - she was at a bus stop and the sides were buckling with the wind.

That's in Renfrewshire.

Have to say today has been glorious here.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 13/12/2011 18:16

Just to back up I've been saying about the uncertainty Xmas Grin

Think it's a slightly dif direction wrt the Edinburgh wind. DD window was not howling last week....is now.
First time I've heard on national radio, snow due to fall in high parts of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

I'm down low so always the last to get it. Will be rather a lot considering how much it's raining.

youarekidding · 13/12/2011 19:19

Oh it got very windy here last night (near Portsmouth) and plenty of rain! DS (7) wanted to know why there where wheelie bins in bushes this morning. Grin

Got quite cold here tonight and wet and windy again but despite Friday looking realy bad for the South the met office isn't saying too bad atm. Gusts to 5mph Thurs night is the worst we're expecting.

PuffOfSmoke · 13/12/2011 19:26

It is snowing horizontally here. Never seen anything like it. There is barely anything on the ground but one side of house is completely covered.

MarriedToTheGrinch · 13/12/2011 19:51

howling wind - quite frightening at the moment. Have drawn the curtains and turned the telly up so as not to hear it.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 13/12/2011 19:56

Just been out in the wind here in Angus, and I swear it was harder to walk in than last week. The wind has sleet in it too, so its absolutely freezing :(

sb6699 · 13/12/2011 21:24

So strange that everywhere else is getting these extremes of weather yet there has been nothing here.

Yes, its cold and it was wet and blowy overnight but nothing you wouldnt expect in December.

We did have hailstones for about 30 seconds today, unfortunately it was while I was attending DD2's nativity play and came down just as the children were crossing the playground in their costumes Sad

mankyscotslass · 13/12/2011 21:43

Dry and cold here and a bit breezy but not bad.

Will see if tomorrow brings a little snow.

headfairy · 13/12/2011 23:04

Lovely sparkling but cold day here (east Surrey) but clouded over this evening and just had the loudest crack of thunder I've heard in a long while in the UK. Just very dd weather at the moment!

headfairy · 13/12/2011 23:05

Very odd weather even...

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 14/12/2011 07:14

sb - its cos low pressures dont usually have a very wide impact in terms of severe weather.

All of the models I've looked at do produce a low pressure moving across southern England, bringing severe gales to France but leaving many of us at risk for some white stuff, perhaps even a small amount in the south as the low pressure leaves us. However, worth noting that if the low pressure moves 100 miles or so further north that predicted at the moment then the winds would hit southern UK.

Well, apart from for ice the warnings have gone
I'm not at all surprised - its been a difficult week for forecasting!
