Storm discussions week beginning 12th Dec

apologies if you've seen this info on a couple of threads but this week does look rather concerning weather wise - with the possible for repeats of more severe gales and I think it would be helpful for people to have an idea of what may be coming up.

It is looking a pretty concerning scenario this week: The storm system Monday/Tuesday looks potent for first the SW and then the north. Then Friday. A long way off but at the moment the storm looks stronger than last weeks. At the moment Scotland looks most at risk but the track is still uncertain. All I can say is be prepared and if your property has suffered damage then I would do your utmost to effect repairs asap.

Wind is picking up on the SE coast of the Isle of Wight and it's bloody freezing.

I have just watched rain fall from a blue sky, standing open mouthed looking at the sky with a puzzled expression on ones face is not the best way to reassure the neighbours that one is not as insane as one appears.

I think, after much pondering, that the rain fell frrom the cloud that had just blown over. they were moving so fast that it had probably passed before the rain hit the ground. only explanation I can think of.

Do you think we'll be OK driving from Norfolk to Warrington on Friday night?

Report
OhYouBadBadReindeer · 14/12/2011 17:33

I think so ProfYaffle, there'll quite possibly some snow lying on your route through the midlands area. Keep an eye on it in case it comes later than expected, or lingers. I think it is being quite well forecast so the gritters should be able to keep up earlier in the day.

ermmm. storm seems to perhaps be back on for those in southern coastal counties. Worth watching in case its a sign that the storm is going to end up further north expected.

ice warnings for all

Thanks Kitten Smile I always find it hard to get a weather forecast for a route rather than a fixed location.

Good plan.

There seems to be some concern as to how much snow this storm may bring on friday to the Midlands area. One to watch.

Reindeer just to let you know my flight from LHR to Manchester on Tuesday was absolutely fine. Not delayed and only a bit bumpy (no more than usual).
Due to fly back Friday night, let's see...
So far weather up here is cool and bright but no snow or howling gales.

Spoke too soon! Snow predicted here for Friday morning.

Really worried about how my big bus will handle the snow coupled with the windey, hilly roads out of the village.

Dc's only have a half day on Friday, am thinking I might just not take them. A bit worried that I'll manage to get them there but if the snow carries on till lunchtime that I wont manage to get back for them.

So kitten, any ideas how bad its going to get?

TC - I'm glad :)

sb - I really don't I'm afraid - its an utter nightmare to forecast. It entirely depends on a)how much the storm deepens (and when) and b)the track it takes. It could either be nothing or 10-20cm. Hopeless lack of help I'm afraid.

There is snow warning on Friday on the Met Office page which takes in the Northern tip of Wiltshire - lets hope it sticks as its been sleeting and wet snowing here on and off today. I just want one day of snow thats all :)

Will be lurking for more updates.

Secretly, I'm a bit excited as I wont have to worry about school runs and Christmas shopping so it'll just be fun for the kids.

Poor HumanCatapult is supposed to be moving house on Friday.

Checking in for oybbk predictions.

Nearly ordered a sleigh from Amazon last week but changed my mind. Have just ordered now but obviously it will be too late if snow hits tomorrow.

I think we are okay here in Cornwall though. Any thoughts OYBBK?

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. Looking at other weather websites, the metoffice is the only one that's going for a possible 'snowmageddon' for us in the Midlands. Everyone else is saying light snow/sleet. I guess we won't know until we wake up tomorrow morning!
