Weather looks potentially *really* interesting Tuesday.

Looks (at the moment) like we will have a really interesting and potentially pretty active cold front sweep the country on Tuesday. looks like it could be an 'ana cold front' where warm air ahead of the front is lifted above the cold front. This can create really good convection - pretty clouds - squally storms - and possibly tornadoes

Will update as we draw closer.

oooh sounds exciting

starsintheireyes · 27/11/2011 22:00

Ah I see. I was shocked to see a gritting lorry on the way home at 7pm tonight, considering it was a mild 6degrees, this must be why!

CalatalieSisters · 27/11/2011 22:02

Ooh, is The Day After Tomorrow really going to happen -- the day after tomorrow? Will we have to live in the British Library and burn books? Will Scotland be wiped out? [excited face]

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/11/2011 22:02

It does sound exciting. I clicked on this thread thinking 'please dont be snow, dont be snow' I'm relieved it's just pretty clouds and tornadoes

Moodykat · 27/11/2011 22:02

It's not going to snow in the south-ish is it?!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/11/2011 22:04

Did I read it wrong??
Please don't let it snow!

midnightexpress · 27/11/2011 22:09

It was pretty blimmin 'interesting' up here in Scotland last night. Howling wind. Look forward to the next instalment.

There are flood warnings out for the Norfolk and Suffolk coast tonight as well I think. Stay safe people.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 27/11/2011 22:09

It is exciting - its very exciting!!! It could be a really classic example of this kind of cold front and it's very similar to the one that produced this which turned out to be a confirmed tornado

OhYouBadBadkitten · 27/11/2011 22:12

not snow - snow not expected in south in forseeable future. Some for Scotland and perhaps hilly Wales as we move through into next week.
Just a lovely exciting dramatic cold front (possibly)

Yes, but Oybbk, is it going to snow???? (Please say yes!!)

TheRepublicOfDreams · 27/11/2011 22:16

X post. Sigh.

BIWI · 27/11/2011 22:18

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! No snow, please, until after Christmas. I can't be doing with the same kind of journey down the M4 as we had last year!

StealthPolarBear · 27/11/2011 22:19

OYBK I love you
no snow
NO SNOW

openerofjars · 27/11/2011 22:22

Snow on Xmas eve, for long enough to make everything pretty, after everyone has got to their destinations, then for an hour or so on the afternoon of Xmas day, but just to be lovely to walk in, not enough to strand anyone.

Please?

DarknessSoothes · 27/11/2011 22:22

Damm it. I want snow. Lots and lots and lots of lovely snow which means I can avoid contact with the fuckwit ex.

Will it be high winds and branches type weather then? trails of destruction rather then dump of snow?

GiganticusBottomus · 27/11/2011 22:23

No. I love OYBBK after I experienced and was able to identify graupel last year. Oh yes, a weather bimbo no longer, OYBBK has educated me

lostinwales · 27/11/2011 22:24

I experienced the tail end of the tornado you linked to OYBBK! It was just out to sea when it went past where I lived at the time (about 500m inland) there was hail like you wouldn't believe and constant lightening, my bedroom windows were moving and rattling like mad, I hid under the bed Blush and was terrified because it was at night and I watch far too many sci-fi films. When I saw on the news there had been a tornado it mad a lot more sense as I though I was about to be abducted by aliens. I've seen a couple of funnel clouds since then where I am now, but never anything that has touched down, fascinating stuff.

StealthPolarBear · 27/11/2011 22:25

oh yes pretty snow on the grass. Enough to build a snowman in, but melts to nothing under the wheels of one car on a road. Provides a firm, steady underfoot substance for elderly people to walk in.

lostinwales · 27/11/2011 22:27

Graupel was my favourite new word and I used it all the time, OYBBK is my favourite ok

If I am allowed a vote I would like snow on the last day of term so that we don't have to travel 300+ miles on Christmas Eve please.

MaureenMLove · 27/11/2011 22:31

The discovery of the word graupel was my favourite word, from my favourite weather forecaster too!

And I'd like snow not before 20th December please. Make it so Number One! Grin

OhYouBadBadkitten · 27/11/2011 22:32

oh wow lostinwales - you lucky bugger! It sounds amazing, if rather scary.

TROD - Depends where you are! Grin

Darkness, if it comes off as models suggest then yes, it will be a pretty dramatic change in weather that will leave people talking and wondering what happened whilst possibly surveying some damage.

some people are getting excited about snow prospects in the midlands in about 10 days time. Can't see it myself, but I am sometimes (quite often??) wrong.

Hmm. hopefully thurs /fri weather wont be too wild and dangerous. ds is traveling. Unless the almight Kitty can manage to get that huge snow dump to block travel just prior to it.

Sod a small bit of snow. i want enought to be able to use my skis to get to places and make people look Confused

Grin Yeah i know the uk is shit at handling snow but i happen to like the white stuff. I need to move me and ds to a colder clime.

bushymcbush · 27/11/2011 22:48

Please educate me someone.

WTF is graupel and how is it pronounced?
