Weather

Weather looks potentially *really* interesting Tuesday.

Looks (at the moment) like we will have a really interesting and potentially pretty active cold front sweep the country on Tuesday. looks like it could be an 'ana cold front' where warm air ahead of the front is lifted above the cold front. This can create really good convection - pretty clouds - squally storms - and possibly tornadoes

Will update as we draw closer.

Just got home.
Very quick update then I'll read once I've got some lunch in me.
Looks pretty much on track. TORRO have issued a tornado watch Southern coastal counties (esp hampshire and Sussex prob at greatest risk) Timings tricky - the worst stretches in a line from west of the IOW up to Yorkshire and extending north at around 3pm, hitting the SE through mid afternoon, with EA seeing the orst at about 6pm.
Ok refreshments and then back.

Lots of racing grey clouds here in South Derbyshire and some pretty heavy gusts. I bet the rain waits until the school run

thetasigmamum · 29/11/2011 12:54

Big ploppy rain here now.Full fat rain. But not huge amounts - still squally rather than continuous

NightLark · 29/11/2011 12:58

South Yorks here (Sheffield) and the weather is getting worse. Quite dark now and the wind is picking up. Just waiting for the school run then all hell will break loose, I calculate...

MotherPanda · 29/11/2011 13:00

Anyone know whats expected for oxfordshire/midlandsey area? its just begun to me very windy here - noisy windy. wondered if storms are ahead?

Lisatheonewhoeatsdrytoast · 29/11/2011 13:01

AWW lostinwales so sad :(

Well i'm in East Lothian, just outside Edinburgh, and its friggin dark, freezing, blowing a gale and torrential rain is not the word!!

blackeyedsanta · 29/11/2011 13:07

w mids

11.30am-12pm gusty winds (ranging from fluttering the leaves and uppermost twigs to blowing larger branches. flags limp and fluttering at corner to horizontal with collapsing top corner. ) scudding clouds moving sw to ne ish in a patchwork of cream to mid grey. mostly light to mid grey. no rain.

1pm... looks much the same. just been a largest gust waving the long main braches of the lime tree. still no rain.

interesting post from christmas lights in north wales. is that the sort of thing we are expecting to see sweeping across the country? . I have 2 hours before venturing out. it is definately going to get chickens and me at school run time as we are both about half way between nwales at 12ish and east anglia at 6 ish.

blackeyedsanta · 29/11/2011 13:09

nightlark and motherpanda look like they are in the scchool run firing line too.

ChickensThinkYouCanGetStuffed · 29/11/2011 13:11

We're so gonna get got, blackeyedsanta. I'll be flying the puppy like a kite.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 13:12

blackeyedsusan and motherpanda- yes, in general what those have experienced in the west is coming over east. The line is a little bit fragmented so some areas won't see such extreme weather.

Thank god my baby isn't in school yet - was thinking of popping into town for some shopping, but might put it off till tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up!

MotherPanda · 29/11/2011 13:16

lostinwales - I didn't see your update, sorry about your poor birds.

Labradorlover · 29/11/2011 13:19

Just been out walking the dogs by the Firth of Forth and it's officially "horizontally, w**king it down", with some incredible gusts.

I think Calataliesisters at the start of the thread isn't far wrong about Scotland being wiped out. Certainly flooded out......
Can we have snow instead please?

thetasigmamum · 29/11/2011 13:20

It's still pelting down in the West.

lost - so sorry about your birds. :(

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 29/11/2011 13:23

Still very windy and rainy here (Devon).I'm identifying lots of new draughts in my house - the airing cupboard door just flew open, there must be a gap there into the chimney or the roof Grin.
Yuck, now I have to go out Sad

blackeyedsanta · 29/11/2011 13:24

just starting fine rain again in w mids.

ChickensThinkYouCanGetStuffed · 29/11/2011 13:30

Yep, fine rain here too. Just enough with the wind to sandpaper your face.

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 29/11/2011 13:37

Squally patchy rain with gusty wind in Warrington.
Please don't let it snow yet. Certainly not next weekend when I'll be driving to parents in N. Norfolk in a teeny tiny rollerskate Ka.

YouCantTeuchThis · 29/11/2011 13:41

wet n windy in inner hebrides, but then it has been for about 10 days!

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 13:41

Just read that Polruan in cornwall had a gust of 75mph.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 13:43

maryz - weather is going west-east. It will still be very windy for a time after the front goes through.

I see from the Met Office radar that the band of rain is due here (Hampshire) within the next hour. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the temperature as it goes through. The temperature yesterday rose about 4 degrees in the afternoon and stayed around 12 degrees throughout the night, which felt rather strange for this time of year.
