Weather looks potentially *really* interesting Tuesday.

Looks (at the moment) like we will have a really interesting and potentially pretty active cold front sweep the country on Tuesday. looks like it could be an 'ana cold front' where warm air ahead of the front is lifted above the cold front. This can create really good convection - pretty clouds - squally storms - and possibly tornadoes

Will update as we draw closer.

I'm in stockport but can't open the link on phone for some reason. A friend who lives localish has had his windows smashed, roof tiles torn off and his shed is lying in pieces. All cos of the wind! It was horrible where I am but no damage done.

PaperView · 29/11/2011 17:43

Heaton moor is stockport. The address would be 123 my street, heaton moor, stockport.

GiganticusBottomus · 29/11/2011 17:45

Torrential in Kent late afternoon, A21 slowed to 40mph (usually 70 mph). A bit scary I can tell you

blackeyedsanta · 29/11/2011 17:46

had heavy showers and blustery winds, but not that spectacular. what was spectacular was just as we were coming out of school, at about 3.50 the settting sun broke through the clouds and lit up some distant autumn tress and the grey-black clouds so that the trees looked like they were on fire and the clouds like billowing orange smoke. unfortunately it did not last long and I could not get a photo because the boy refused to walk back to the car.

hugglymugly · 29/11/2011 17:58

Not much happened here (Hampshire), though the temperature did drop quite noticeably after the front had gone through. Not much in the way of rainfall, and we still have leaves on the trees.

Not so good elsewhere, though. From the BBC link that mankyscotslass posted, it does seem like a tornado at Heaton Moor. Interesting eye-witness report (quoted here for those who can't open the link):

"It went almost pitch black. The wind suddenly turned up about 20 notches to the point when it became quite frightening. It felt like you were in the middle of a hurricane and then it all died down and outside you could just hear car alarms."

bilblio · 29/11/2011 18:11

Just reading about the Stockport tornado. We're not far from there either. I guessed it must have been that time. It went grim, really, really heavy rain, strong winds blowing in every direction and empty wheelie bins clattering down the street. They've put a community notice board up across the road this afternoon and I half expected it to blow down.

We're used to seeing interesting weather over the moors opposite, but this one was worth commenting on.

DH also reminded me that I'd promised to pick DD up from school this afternoon. Hmm

Meglet · 29/11/2011 18:23

The good news is we didn't drown. And it wasn't cold rain.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 18:45

Paperview - please can you or your friend contact TORRO they are the Tornado and storm research organisation and are very interested in the events that happened in Heaton Moor

(ps I didnt actually predict a tornado in Stockport but did raise the suggestion generally that today would be good weather conditions to create them)

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 18:46

Manky - that's the same event we are trying to find info about :)

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 18:53

remember -its not officially been declared a tornado yet. It may be declared one, but evidence is required first that it wasnt severe straight line winds.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 19:28

If anyone was near Breighton, E. Yorkshire and was witness to any severe weather events today then please can you contact TORRO. Thank you.

(they are going to be quite busy I think)

Well that explains the effect of someone effectively turning the lights out about 2:30pm and the complete downpour that was more like being under a waterfall. very interesting. I'd forgotten about this thread Blush

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 30/11/2011 09:36

Today is lovely and sunny. Dry but very cold. It was a really clear night though, so I imagine that would explain the chill.
Very concerned mum at school telling me it would snow next week.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 30/11/2011 18:15

Well to be hair it probably will Kreecher - on high ground in scotland and perhaps the Pennines too. No widespread snow event though next week but the temps will be closer to a december norm and so after the past month it will feel rather cold.

thought I saw a couple of snow flakes today (NE Fife) but nothing came of it. Damn you, snow shovel.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 03/12/2011 07:09

habbibu - tomorrow.......(perhaps, you might be a bit close to the coast?)

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 03/12/2011 07:13

Just really wet and cold here today. No snow thank goodness.

habbibu · 03/12/2011 13:17

Think we might be, tbh. Clear and cold today.
