Weather looks potentially *really* interesting Tuesday.

Looks (at the moment) like we will have a really interesting and potentially pretty active cold front sweep the country on Tuesday. looks like it could be an 'ana cold front' where warm air ahead of the front is lifted above the cold front. This can create really good convection - pretty clouds - squally storms - and possibly tornadoes

Will update as we draw closer.

it's been very dark in south south devon today. does this tell of what is to come tomorrow?

thetasigmamum · 28/11/2011 18:36

It's not been any darker than normal for this time of year, surely? Last Monday, now that was interesting weather. As in terrifying.

AlmaMartyr · 28/11/2011 19:04

It's been really dark here this afternoon Piratecat (just north of Dartmoor). Last Monday was totally unremarkable here though, did I miss something?

OhYouBadBadkitten · 28/11/2011 19:12

I do mean the west. IM(NSHO) I think Devon and Cornwall should be included but the met office have very strict criteria for when the issue their warnings, so perhaps they dont think it will meet them.

Piratecat, not really, though it was pretty humid and mild really wasnt it, so it is one part really in the story of tomorrows development. (warm mild air meets vigorous cold front=potential decent convection)

Will still be worth keeping an eye out for updates for those away from the warning areas. Will try and do an update first thing in the morning.

Alma We were driving. Along the A38 from Plymouth to Exeter at about 10:30pm (been to see John Barrowman) and the wind and rain was incredible. I've never seen such heavy rain. It was well scary.

OYBBK The most westerly bit of the country is Cornwall How can that not be described as the west in favour of other, less westerly, places?

OhYouBadBadkitten · 28/11/2011 21:26

I'm not following you thetasigma - I am including all of cornwall in my thoughts, the met office has just part of it included , I think that more areas in the west will end up being included in the warnings by tomorrow am.
sorry if I've been muddling.

Ah, ok, I understand now! Sorry. Am thick. :) I hope the really bad weather doesn't affect us though- we have another long drive in the evening.

AlmaMartyr · 28/11/2011 22:38

Thetasigmamum - sounds scary Shock We're just off the A30, funny how much weather can differ across the moor.

lostinwales · 28/11/2011 23:12

In my role as far west Wales reporter I have to say it's incredibly warm and moist outside. A good cold front hitting that should be interesting. I've done one tornado though, please can I be excused another one OYBBK?

thetasigmamum · 28/11/2011 23:29

It's not warm here at all. Hasn't been all day. Flipping freezing, so it is. The cats have been in all evening, a sure sign of it being proper cold. Wind picking up now.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 29/11/2011 07:19

by evneing it will be much colder sigmatheta - but the dramatic weather will have passed you by by then.

So what can we expect? Many will see very heavy rain. Severe gales are likely on many west coasts this morning. Further inland strong-gale force squally winds are likely. Seems to be travelling a bit slower than it appeared to last night so by 3pm it will be approx half way across the country, starting to hit east coasts by early evening and by late evening it will be clearing the UK. As it crosses the UK it will narrow. After the cold front passes temps will drop several degrees.

Windy, cold, dark - but it aways is dark here this time of year (this is why changing the clocks would be a disaaaaaaaster for people living down here). The wind is pretty blustery. But not constant. It's squally.

Elliott · 29/11/2011 08:22

Pretty quiet here in Newcastle - but I gather the fun starts for us around rush hour tonight?

piratecat · 29/11/2011 08:28

very very windy here in southernmost Devon!! guess the rest of those leave will deffo be in my garden today.

dd and i still ill so glad to be in.

AlmaMartyr · 29/11/2011 08:31

Very very windy here early morning. Still pretty gusty. Bouts of occasional heavy rain but black clouds moving very fast with occasional blue sky.

From Okehampton.

Northernlurker · 29/11/2011 08:32

york - windy, some low cloud but also some very high, cold looking cloud.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 29/11/2011 08:37

West Dorset - very very windy here (although we're also very high up - I live on top on a massive rock! Grin). Lots of big patches of very dark clouds but no rain this moring that i'm aware of. The cloud is moving very fast and seems to be pretty clear blue sky behind it. Looks quite pretty, actually. We did have a few heavy showers last night too.
