Ham are now asking to be called "public figures".. wtf! They wanted to be private citizens which is why they left the RF..Is this to try & get security.
Good on King Charkes nipping their shit in the bud & reminding them of their station!

Harry and Meghan ‘caught off guard’ by King’s decision over their status

The couple were reportedly ‘surprised’ by the memorandum issued by King Charles

People can talk about WORKING royals and keep a straight face so nothing can beat that😂

Such an ignorant and ill-informed view.

BruFord · 11/09/2026 13:14

TheBayHorse · 09/09/2026 13:37

Well surely it's up to other people to define them that way. They can't demand it. What's the definition of a "public figure" anyway?

I agree @TheBayHorse.

second they can’t just try and do ordinary work bc the press would ruin it for them, so what do you expect them to do?

@Greygreenlandscape654 They could if they wanted to. You never hear about Princess Margaret's children, for example, they do ordinary work, I believe (albeit not to the extent that we do, they lead v. comfortable lives :-). It would take time, but the older William's children become, the less media attention will be directed towards H's family.

Cucurella · 11/09/2026 13:24

What they always wanted was to monetise their position in the royal family and accept the free stuff. And that’s what they’re now about to do.

ProfessorofDarkArts · 11/09/2026 13:26

the older William's children become, the less media attention will be directed towards H's family.

And I think that’s at the bottom of this - they can’t bear a lack of attention despite saying they don’t want it. We all know someone who claims to hate being the centre of attention then does everything to make sure they are. This is no different. I honestly wish they’d just STFU and get on with their lives, life is hard for a lot of people and I think tolerance for these two entitled wingers is rapidly running low.

IcedPurple · 11/09/2026 13:28

Greygreenlandscape654 · 11/09/2026 12:09

But that’s an even more absurd argument to say that the son of the monarch and the brother to the next king doesn’t qualify as a public figure.

I think people are being deliberately obtuse about this bc they almost gleefully want them to fail at anything they do

And when people say they want to be private citizens; first they never wanted that, they always wanted to continue doing charity work in some capacity and second they can’t just try and do ordinary work bc the press would ruin it for them, so what do you expect them to do?

Edited

What do you mean by 'ordinary work'? What qualifications do either of them have for said 'ordinary' work?

As for the press 'ruining' everything. Do you know where they are living? Where the children are at school? They came over here a few months ago and nobody knew, although Meghan did insist on sharing family holiday photos on her public social media. Even the biggest stars, people far more famous than these two, manage to keep things private if they want to. IF they want to.

It's not, but I love that you feel the need to jump to defend them.

Have you not read the article! Yes they originally said that they wanted to be private citizens but now they want to be public figure😂big difference! @thepurpleshark

Now that Harry's announced his 'September Schedule', it's all clear to me: He's planning to carry on like a 'working royal' until KC and PW give in and take him back in an effort to control him.
PH (and MM is she's in tow) going to all these events will make them/him a de facto working royal and will make RF's insistence that PH is NOT a working royal look ridiculous because, in fact, he will be working and doing exactly the same 'work' as the 'working royals'.

Be working royals. Or not. What HMTQ said years ago. It's not tricky. But they don't want to be working royals so they can go do their own thing, as private citizens.

I am flattered 😂 but I doubt they have nothing better to do than go on MN.

It's amusing that some little people cannot comprehend that not everyone hates them, but it's odd that they take so much space in some people's head.

No it won't.

It will just make Harry look pathetic, and emphasise his non royal status.

I mean, how dumb do you have to be to flounce out of a royal role, jet off across the Atlantic, fail in almost all your ventures, only to come back to England 7 years later, trying to play faux royal in the face of an explicit statement by the King that you are not, in fact, a working royal?

That's pretty sad.

Hopefully they will just remove the Sussex titles. Harry will always be a 'prince' but that's all.

No it won't be the same. They haven't penned in Grimsby town hall meeting the OAPs, Milton Keynes bingo club, Middlesborough cub scouts new hall ribbon cutting. They're just picking and choosing their own select choices so they actually aren't doing much at all. There's no way the taxes will pay for that level of grift.

@ThePurpleShark Are you sure about that?! I know that's unkind but still....

@tarheelbaby They can do what they like, I doubt it'll change anyone's mind at BP. It's a classic case of you made your bed and now you have to lie on it.

I think you've muddled things up. As far as the King's letter goes, it's irrelevant whether they are public figures, d-list celebrities or completely anonymous people who no one ever hears anything about. The point is that as far as the royal family goes, they are not working royals but private citizens. The King's letter even notes that they are perfectly free to carry out whatever charitable or commercial activities they wish.

They can be both public figures and private citizens at the same time. What they are patently not is working royals who represent the monarchy or the King or the British state in any way.

I’m not remotely muddled about it.

The statement changes absolutely nothing.

And while they are not official working royals, Harry remains the son of the current king and the brother of the next king. He is also Diana’s son which will always spark press interest.

He is part of the family whether they like it or not. So he will be invited to the King’s funeral and the coronation whenever those two things take place and presumably other family events?

(Let’s hope they don’t cost cost British taxpayers a combined total of approximately £233.7 million this time.)

So Harry will always be associated with monarchy as long as he lives. It’s strange how the hereditary monarch himself, his heir, and their supporters don’t seem to understand this.

So many people claiming to be knowledgeable about how they spend their time… their motivations … their aspirations.

It’s most peculiar!

This is true. I feel sorry for those children in some ways. They'll get a bit of a free ride until they finish university or whatever and then the british press will be unleashed on them - they will all three get it in the neck but I wouldn't want to be Louis for anything. The daily mail is already polishing its headlines for him.

I’m not sure, that’s not what happens normally. I mean Harry was an arse growing up but much of what he did was not reported.

BruFord · 11/09/2026 23:21

@Greygreenlandscape654 I agree that he'll always be associated with the monarchy, but in decades to come, I imagine he'll be similar to KC's cousins in terms of his profile, i.e., he won't get much attention. Unless, of course, he does something noteworthy in his own right, which would be great. I suppose Invictus is noteworthy, but that's not exactly thriving atm. If he finds another cause and makes a success of it, good on him.

They literally said they were coming back as private citizens (using those exact words) and would not be undertaking any royal duties.

AspiringChatBot · 12/09/2026 00:20

They are public figures and private citizens. The King is right to emphasize that they have the rights of private citizens, as the courts also confirmed via the Mirror Group lawsuit verdict which acknowledged that both statuses impacted his situation and legal rights. The rights of being a private citizen AND the reality of being a public figure are relevant to the way they are formally treated and regarded by the law and policy, not just one or the other. This simply isn't contradictory, nor legitimately controversial.

Prince Harry resigned from his office as a working royal, but he can't resign from his identity and history as the King's son. His status as a private citizen COULD change, for example if he becomes a working royal again or is elected to public office. His status as a public figure is unlikely to ever change as it stems from his global profile growing up in the public eye. The King himself could become a private citizen, if for example a referendum ended the monarchy. He would still be a public figure. (And being "Royal" in any sense, has never been a requirement to be a public figure; most are not.)
