Are Netflix secretly playing Harry and Meghan?

H&M think they are dictating the Netflix narrative, but I wonder if Netflix are actually playing a longer game? This was billed as their story, but they are so tone deaf and are exposing themselves to ridicule with their ham fisted attempts to justify their behaviour. It's so full of ridiculous unsubstantiated statements and generalisations with no evidence to back it up. It's using stock photographs of photographers that have nothing to do with them. Why not show real photographers? A ridiculous car chase with a lone photographer on a moped provoking panic and faux fear in the couple is laughable. And as for Harry's face as Meghan takes the piss out of the queen? This was definitely seen by the editors who chose to leave it in.

Will Netflix get a double helping from this series with the candy-floss fluff that's the first airing, with a second being the dissection of this sad and deluded pair?

Possibly the producers will have rubbed their hands when she did the mock curtsey.

3catsandcounting · 10/12/2022 20:19

I thought she was taking the piss out of herself with the curtsey? (I'm no Meghan fan)

thenightsky · 10/12/2022 20:21

Netflix will be rubbing their hands in glee for sure. H&M have played into their hands.

SaltyCrisp · 10/12/2022 20:25

I found the opening scene of the 2nd episode quite chilling.

"Haz" is clearly disturbed by the pap on a bike (real or imagined) whereas Megan seems to be relishing the drama. Harry says something like "in ten minutes we will be with friends..."

It was pitiful.
Netflix have peak Sussexed me.

SirChenjins · 10/12/2022 20:27

I’ve wondered this - esp when they left up the (very funny but quite cutting) comments about H&M on their official trailer on YouTube Grin

I think they’re going for both markets - the people that like them and their recollections won’t be disappointed, while their critics will be delighted by their unintentionally comedic antics and will pick apart their inaccuracies. Win/win from NF pov.

Flapjackquack · 10/12/2022 20:27

It’s aimed at an American audience and from what I can see on social media they are lapping it up.

garlicandsapphires · 10/12/2022 20:28

I really don’t think so. They came across much better than I thought they would, and I wouldn’t consider myself a fan at all.

Slimjimtobe · 10/12/2022 20:29

It will end in tears

I can send why the queen said never complain never explain .. she had grace

im no royalist but when you take on that life you know what you are getting into

This in particular made me realise this isn't the documentary Harry and Meghan envisaged and were not given editorial rights to. I wonder if this is why Meghan has recently tried to distance herself from it? It's clear Meghan plays to Harry's paranoia where his mother is concerned, and this shows it far more clearly than any number of interviews.

In a few years time Netflix will be using this series in another documentary about their downfall. After all they own the series and can do what they want with it. Very sneaky of Netflix and a reminder of why saying nothing is really the right response.

I actually warmed to them and am "on their side".

His mum was killed at the hands of he paparazzi.

He's got his wife away to stop that happening to her.

He's doing what any decent man should do!

I found that scene quite odd too, she seems to be chatting through some kind of advanced driving/alternative route safety plan, totally feeding into Harry’s paranoia, meanwhile the “pap” on the scooter (who is never actually shown) is probably just someone delivering a pizza nearby.

mrsmarmalade12 · 10/12/2022 20:41

I found the scene where Meghan is clearly pointing out them been followed by a photographer really odd, like she was playing on his insecurities. I can't see why they would keep that in, if not to make her look bad.

Supersimkin2 · 10/12/2022 20:43

Netflix are only able to want content that makes them money. H&M ditto, but they have a reputation to protect, although it may not be the one they think it is.

There’ll be various agreements about who gets control of the show that the public sees. In case of conflict during the edit - the show’s too boring, say, cos H&M won’t dish the dirt - they’ll ask for their money back. Happens, this. Usually the result is dirt flung wildly. Sometimes the money goes back, but I can’t see M doing that.

To be honest, I don’t think H&M are being played - they don’t need to be manipulated to make themselves ‘watchable’. That’s the glory of reality TV.

hattie43 · 10/12/2022 20:44

I think the wheels are coming off with all these things they are saying proving to be un truths . I can't think what Netflix was doing paying such a some for a production not telling us anything new.

Huh, won't making a documentary like this thrust them even more into the limelight???

By taking his family to a country with nearly 400 million guns in circulation? Remember John Lennon?

Is it just me or is the series wildly boring?! Ep 2 or 3 has all these people begging Meg up and telling her life story. Yawn.

ArcaneWireless · 10/12/2022 20:47

Absolute win for NF.

H&M? Not so much.

MarshaMelrose · 10/12/2022 20:51

It took so long for Netflix to get this off them, I doubt Netflix care whether it results in good or bad publicity for the couple as long as it makes money. Unless, of course, they have agreement for more programmes from them. In that case, I guess they'd prefer them to be popular.

Snugglepiggy · 10/12/2022 20:56

I'm still thinking about that curtsey scene was sending herself up it just seemed so disrespectful to the late Queen. And it's only weeks really since Harry stood in uniform keeping a silent and moving vigil at her coffin.Contrast that to him sitting next to a giggling overacting M and it feels all wrong.

I agree. I thought they came across very well in the doc and it doesn't match the headlines I've seen all week.

liarliarshortsonfire · 10/12/2022 20:57

I suspect that although M&H have some say over the content, I bet they've not got the final say on some of it.

They won't have realised that they needed to sense check all the photos (such as the paparazzi one), or that some scenes they'd rather weren't in there (the curtesy one) will be left in. No one in their right mind would have left that in there, not so much M taking the piss, or thinking she's being funny, but the fact H definitely doesn't look happy, and a tab embarrassed.

I think Netflix don't care who is right or wrong, just that dirt being dished on the RF and M&H looking stupid sells. Much like the tabloids M&H have so much hate for.

PeaceJoySleep · 10/12/2022 20:59

Netflix can't be pleased that there are no new scoops

Quarique · 10/12/2022 21:00

I usually like a royal documentary but I found this one a bit boring. I agree that its aimed at the American audience.

mumda · 10/12/2022 21:00

Who keeps a video diary?

Who makes a TV show about themselves after saying they want a private life.
