Kylie documentary on Netflix

Poor Jason Donovan. He's still clearly so cut up about being dumped for Michael Hutchence. Kylie lit up talking about MH and didn't express any regret for hurting J. I wonder if she will feel bad when she sees how much he is still affected.

I once heard someone say that Kylie says a lot of words in interviews but doesn't really give specifics.
Big revelations:

  • return of cancer in 2021 (only given 30 secs at the end)
  • She did IVF. Didn't give any details tho eg was it just egg freezing or was it embryos, did she ever get pregnant. (Not suggesting for a minute it's any of our business but i know from my own experience you have to decide whether to do just eggs or ask your partner to use his sperm as embryos freeze better so might have been a hell of a conversation with Olivier Martinez.) I got the impression she didn't get too far with it sadly - the implication with the song lyrics being that nothing ever came into being.
Inferences I think we are to draw:
  • she took drugs with MH (not news)
  • she had a boob job in the early days. Remember how Britney got such a hard time for the same many years later!

@TheOliveDreamer I’ve just found the documentary available to watch on YouTube! So thank you for that @IcedPurple

I was such a huge INXS fan. The thing I loved the most was that they had the same line up for 20 years, which is very unusual in the music industry. You could see just how much these guys loved each other.

Me too now thanks @IcedPurple

I LOVE this song, reminds me of Trade a million years ago ✊

I love it too. Kylie is so sexy and grown up!

Hutchence's mother Patricia, who was a makeup artist, did Kylie's makeup for the video, and she's wearing one of his rings.

Wow I had no idea! Everyday's a school day....!

@IcedPurple it's a bit different making a documentary after someone's death compared to someone who is still with us and still has a career to think of. Kylie has obviously been very much involved with hers, Michael Hutchence not at all.

Remember how much came out about George Michael after he passed? He kept things close to his chest (maybe not quite so much as Kylie but still!)

Yes of course. That's kind of my point.

A 'documentary' made with the cooperation of the subject, especially if they still have an active career, is never going to tell us very much of interest. It's essentially a PR exercise.

I don't remember much coming out about GM after his death. What sort of stuff?

Oh yes I heard about that. I thought you meant horrible stuff. As if!

Thebinisrightthere · 01/06/2026 15:40

Yes. She's always been a pretty crap interviewer imo.

I also remember Paula Yates interviewing KM on that famous Big Breakfast bed and asking her if she'd ever slept with Prince! KM very politely skirted around the question

Yes, but that was the sort of show it was and the sort of question that Paula would ask. It was supposed to be an `edgy' and 'sexy' show.

It was horrible how Cat Deeley was asking her about kids when she was just recovering from cancer! It’s like “read the room!” 😩

I wonder what Cat's thoughts are on that now. It was such a standard interview question back in the day (probably still is), and Cat was very young so it's feasible that infertility after cancer treatment being very likely didn't even enter her head.

I really enjoyed the doc, I wasn't expecting hard hitting investigation so just appreciated it for the nostalgia. I was obsessed with Neighbours and subsequently Kylie as I was about 10/11 when I should be so lucky came out.

Did anyone else notice the clip of noted sex pest Frank Bough quizzing 18 year old Kylie about her sex life? 👀

No I didn't notice the Frank Bough part. Which episode was it?

Cat would have been told what to ask. She probably didn't even think. Hopefully would now though?

I finished the MH doc Mystify last night & it was so good so thanks once again @IcedPurple @metalmum15 & @TheOliveDreamer Jaysus that head injury really messed him up which is so sad & anecdotally it does seem to be quite common

Helena Christensen comes across as such a lovely person as well as being stunningly beautiful

I love Kylie but i was disappointed with the documentary. There were too many video clips and not enough of Kylie talking. I didnt really learn much about her life.

I learnt nothing about her at all, they only time I thought we saw a glimpse of the real her was at the end when she revealed the news about her second cancer diagnosis. Everything else was just odd overly fake smiles .

I thought she had to contend with appalling comments about her career/ babies/ marriage. Quite shocking.

Helena was/is otherwordly beautiful. Like an ethereal creature from a different planet.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 05/06/2026 13:33

Poor Kylie, you could see MH had checked out completely and was on to his next conquest when he was interviewed in the back of that taxi.

All these new Netflix docs is like the beckhams an Ramsay etc they’re just a huge well paying pr exercise, they pretend it’s a tell all but it’s just them being their persona pretending to be their real selves, boring as all heck

RubieChewsDay · 05/06/2026 22:44

I suppose instead of calling them documentaries they should really be called retrospectives or maybe visual autobiographies. In the olden days they would have just gone on This is Your Life.

Having watched this, the Beckham documentary and some of the boy/ girl band ones one of the themes across all of them is how awful the tabloid press were in the 90s/ early 2000s. Not sure if they’d get away with it now, but so many stars were built up then to be ripped apart.

Yes, and while it’s true the tabloids were horrendous (let’s not even get into the phone hacking scandal, eh?), I did think that the fans and fan obsessiveness are the other problem that none of these documentaries want to touch because it would be poking the bear.

The tabloids aren’t as strong or vicious as they once were, but instead we have internet connectivity and all the rage and bile that used to be channeled through the media is just EVERYWHERE. Turns out the tabloids really were just publishing what a portion of people wanted to read about someone they didn’t rate!

The flip side of that is that fans can be pretty tribalistic and unreasonable, even (especially?) when they adore someone. I thought the documentary brushed over how badly a lot of Kylie’s fans reacted to her efforts to “find herself” artistically after her early pop records - it was left to Nick Cave to mention it, but they left it as more of a reaction to HIM rather than that weird sense of ownership fans can get.

springbabydays · 10/06/2026 15:57

@PineappleSunrise interesting you say that. As a primary school kid I moved away from her myself! Found her again at Confide in Me 🫶

Thebinisrightthere · 10/06/2026 19:43

@PineappleSunriseI must admit I went off her when she left PWL. I just didn't feel.that she was being true to herself with Confide in Me etc. And that video for Put Yourself in my Place I found extremely irritating, with her clothes falling off! I went right off Madonna when she released Erotica too, though I admire them both for taking a chance

SequinsandSolerosInTheSummertime · 10/06/2026 20:44

Love Put Yourself in my place. Video was meant to be homage to Barbarella, surely?

If you say so. Never seen it. At the time I just thought it was another excuse for Kylie to show her body

She does say so it was influenced by Barbarella.
As far as I’m aware Kylie isn’t the only female artist to wear skimpy outfits.
What I do find interesting is that she’s moved with time. The outfits are much more covered now.
I think she controlled her own destiny when she moved from PWL.
I am not the world’s biggest fan but she took her talent and ran with it, and works really hard. I have a good friend who works with her in an adjacent industry and I am told she’s just lovely to be around.
I lived the trouser suit she wore at Glastonbury. She certainly knows style and what suits her. Like everyone she will have made some visual mistakes. But overall I think she’s presented herself well through each era.

Edited

Yes she does seem lovely & I was surprised to see her in rehearsals practicing her dance routines, looked really hard going. She has honed her craft very well over the years & is a great entertainer. She should stick to pure pop, disco songs as that's where she's had the most success. I don't like much that she's done in recent years but I quite like Padam Padam
