Poor Jason Donovan. He's still clearly so cut up about being dumped for Michael Hutchence. Kylie lit up talking about MH and didn't express any regret for hurting J. I wonder if she will feel bad when she sees how much he is still affected.

I once heard someone say that Kylie says a lot of words in interviews but doesn't really give specifics.
Big revelations:

  • return of cancer in 2021 (only given 30 secs at the end)
  • She did IVF. Didn't give any details tho eg was it just egg freezing or was it embryos, did she ever get pregnant. (Not suggesting for a minute it's any of our business but i know from my own experience you have to decide whether to do just eggs or ask your partner to use his sperm as embryos freeze better so might have been a hell of a conversation with Olivier Martinez.) I got the impression she didn't get too far with it sadly - the implication with the song lyrics being that nothing ever came into being.
Inferences I think we are to draw:
  • she took drugs with MH (not news)
  • she had a boob job in the early days. Remember how Britney got such a hard time for the same many years later!

Bump

Yes it was so evident- she wasn’t really that in to Jason even though she was fond of him. But really expressed no remorse for running off with Michael. And yes completely lit up when speaking of him.

Jason did seem a little bitter and angry still.

Only watched the first episode

Greenspaceskeepmecalm · 21/05/2026 22:38

She clearly loved Michael. I’ve watched the first two episodes. Love Kylie!
I don’t remember there being so much dislike of her in her early days.

CuntOfTheLitter · 21/05/2026 22:41

I thought his bitterness was completely obvious and I felt a bit disappointed about that. I did wonder if maybe he was fairly bitter and jealous when they were together?

Greenspaceskeepmecalm · 21/05/2026 22:41

I think she broke Jason’s heart- he talked about on a recent podcast.

I wondered the same. She must have been travelling loads. I guess he didn’t like that. She did go on about liking to be ‘free’ quite a lot!

LovelyCoconuts · 21/05/2026 23:04

I think Jason must have been pretty humiliated being so publicly dumped for another man. Someone he had looked up to, in fact. And then having to see pretty sexualised images of them together in the media. Did he really say that Kylie "went into a bathroom" with MH the first time they met, whilst J was outside? I'd be pretty bitter after all that too! He admits he wanted to marry and have children with her. I wonder if part of her wonders "what if..."

MH is a classic case of "if he'll do it WITH you, he'll do it TO you" (he cheated on Kylie with Helena Christenson, supposedly).

I myself had the "boring boyfriend I could have married" and the "passionate whirlwind toxic relationship with a tortured but worldly man" and am quite glad to just be on my own now!

I think JD came across really bitter. I think he was lucky lucky lucky to get the fond nostalgia treatment he got from Kylie, because he was probably jealous, from way back then.

She lit up the screen most of the time but talking about MH - well that was something else. What a perfect time to be young, look like her, whirlwind like that - no wonder it has such an effect still.

I was a HUGE Kylie fan when I was 10. I have always liked her music but I like her even more now after seeing the documentary. She carries a strength, femininity, sexiness and joy which was evident through the doc.

CuntOfTheLitter · 21/05/2026 23:06

Well I also thought it was shit if him to say that about the bathroom.

Honestly, this is 40 years ago…she still seemed quite angry! Jeez

Thundertoast · 21/05/2026 23:09

I havnt watched the doc, but just intrigued- i thought they were together for about 3 years when they were 18, have I got that wrong?

Empress13 · 22/05/2026 06:07

i watched it all. TBH her and Jason were very young when they got together it was young first love. It was never going to last. I found Jason quite bitter he’s moved on also found true love and had the kids K never got to have. What I found awful was that we were all led to believe by the press that she was career minded and too selfish to have kids when the truth was so very different. To the PP saying we werent informed enough about her IVF/second cancer it’s none of our business. The second cancer came in lockdown and I’m guessing hit her harder than the first diagnosis. I’m impressed at how she kept it away from the gutter press. She didn’t have to mention it in her documentary. I for one like Kylie she comes across as hard working, genuine, family oriented and a lovely person who has had plenty of knocks but comes back fighting and to be still going strong in the industry after 40 years is bloody impressive. I do wonder if Michael would still have been alive today if he’s stayed with her and not ended up in the toxic relationship with Paula. Oh and I forgot how bloody gorgeous he was!

miserablecat · 22/05/2026 07:26

Ive watched the first 2 episodes.
Kylie has been my girl crush since I was 10!
I found the Jason interview clips a bit awkward - both from the point of view that she, maybe put less emphasis on their relationship,(but was a lot more forthcoming about MH) but also that hes (hopefully, happily) married. He seemed quite bitter, almost a bit aggressive. In a way I think theyve both got something the other desperately wanted - she became a global superstar....he had a family. Whenever I hear him in interviews I feel like JD takes himself really seriously.

I think she's got a sort of star quality or x factor that he doesnt. She comes across as very likeable, and genuine and hardworking. And not afraid to try new stuff.
It was interesting watching the parts about the early days at pwl, because I recently listened to a podcast with Rick Astley and he also talked about how fast moving and intense it was to be recording, doing totp, then flying out to different countries to promote the records, pre Internet and social media.
I loved all the clips and photos from way back when. she was - and still is - beautiful

catspyjamas1 · 22/05/2026 07:56

I watched and loved it! Teared up a couple of times. Once when they played Never Tear Us Apart 😭 My first song memory as a child was Locomotion, I drove my dad bananas playing, singing and dancing to it endlessly. Kylie is an absolute POWERHOUSE of a woman!

user293948849167 · 22/05/2026 10:52

“Poor Jason” fgs they were teenagers, it was 40 years ago, has he still not got over it?
He seemed really pathetic to me, being jealous of her fame, making little digs, following her around with a camera urgh. Used to be a big Jason fan but really gone off him now

user1492757084 · 22/05/2026 10:56

It's fair that Kylie only reveals what she is comfortable to share about her health.
She is truthful and earnt every bit of her success. Brilliant that she has made this.

Itsanewdawnitsanewdayitsanewlife4me · 22/05/2026 11:52

Loved it. Jason is just bitter his success was never as huge as hers and to be honest he only ever got with Stock Aitken and Waterman due to her so he should be thankful for her. He has clearly also conveniently forgotten that he got himself into drink and drugs and nearly died and it had nothing to do with his 3 year relationship with Kyle which ended in 1989. I mean fucking hell build a bridge Jason.

Yep he really went down in my estimation. They were only 17 and he needs to get over it.

Daisydaisy1313 · 22/05/2026 13:47

I’m watching.

Gosh shocked at Jason Donovan’s attitude. He could have at least tried to hide his bitterness.

However, I wonder if Kylie is a classic case of woman repeatedly going for the wrong men. She clearly was very much in love with MH and even said she’d been looking for that ever since. But he was no good for her

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 22/05/2026 14:02

I love Kylie but i was disappointed with the documentary. There were too many video clips and not enough of Kylie talking. I didnt really learn much about her life.

springbabydays · 22/05/2026 14:16

In Jason's defence if you've seen him live in recent years you'll know he doesn't take himself seriously at ALL.

The interview probably brought up feelings he hadn't had to address in a very long time (in a similar way Kylie's did for her), and maybe he was unprepared for how that would make him feel.

I think we can all empathise a bit if we try - his girlfriend went on to have a more successful career AND left him for another guy. She left him behind in every way possible and that's gonna smart. You don't forget your first heartbreak.

I cried!

Love you Kylie and Jason, just like I always did!! 💔

keepswimming38 · 22/05/2026 14:35

He openly stated his ego was dented. I bet he developed into a right pita! She simply outgrew him. Get over it Jason! I’m fascinated by the OM relationship. He got called ‘Le rat’ at the time in the press for going off with a model whilst Kylie was ill with cancer.

Edited

Ive not seen him perform in recent years but ive heard several interviews where imo he came across very earnest/taking himself seriously.

But yeah it must sting that Kylie and Guy Pearce had more stellar careers after Neighbours. Especially as they started as a sort of golden couple.

nochance17 · 22/05/2026 14:56

I was surprised at how openly bitter Jason D still is , I mean he has been married to someone else for years and has 3 kids I think but he still seems annoyed that she left him, I mean most of us get our hearts broken at an early age but he’s had 40 years to get over it. Or maybe he’s jealous of the success she’s had. The misogyny towards her even in the 90s .. all these old farts interviewing her asking her how long she will last and will she be a singer or an actress (implying she can’t be both) think it was Terry Wogan (a radio host) asking this on his tv chat show… oh the irony .. well you didn't struggle with more than one role Terry so why would she (and I liked Terry Wogan my mum loved him) but she put up with a lot of flack in the early days and handled it well.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 22/05/2026 15:21

I haven’t seen it but, like many of a certain age, Neighbours was compulsory lunchtime viewing at university and I loved Kylie and Jason. I’m not surprised that he comes across as slightly bitter - he has always seemed upfront and honest.

In interviews when he was with his wife, but before they married, he attributed a lot of his recovery to her stabilising influence. I didn’t have the impression that he was “madly in love” but that he loved and respected her and was deeply grateful to her.

Delatron · 22/05/2026 15:22

I was impressed with how resilient she is/was. I mean I knew she was tough but to see all the criticism she received at 19. And watching her schedule - flying back and forth to Australia, filming, flying back to record and gigs. All that pressure that comes with fame. I know she was young but still!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at a similar age to her so felt a bit of an affinity with her. Upsetting to hear she had to go through that again. But pleased she’s ok.
