Poor Jason Donovan. He's still clearly so cut up about being dumped for Michael Hutchence. Kylie lit up talking about MH and didn't express any regret for hurting J. I wonder if she will feel bad when she sees how much he is still affected.

I once heard someone say that Kylie says a lot of words in interviews but doesn't really give specifics.
Big revelations:

  • return of cancer in 2021 (only given 30 secs at the end)
  • She did IVF. Didn't give any details tho eg was it just egg freezing or was it embryos, did she ever get pregnant. (Not suggesting for a minute it's any of our business but i know from my own experience you have to decide whether to do just eggs or ask your partner to use his sperm as embryos freeze better so might have been a hell of a conversation with Olivier Martinez.) I got the impression she didn't get too far with it sadly - the implication with the song lyrics being that nothing ever came into being.
Inferences I think we are to draw:
  • she took drugs with MH (not news)
  • she had a boob job in the early days. Remember how Britney got such a hard time for the same many years later!

@Discardedbutnotlost8it was the coronation, not just a royal variety. She said she didn't feel it was appropriate, or words to that effect iirc. Which, like I say, would be fine if she had never benefitted from royal performances. But she has, so it feels a bit 'off' to me

Where did she say that? All I can find on the interwebs is that her spokesperson said she would be out of the country at the time of the Coronation. There was no reference to the event being 'inappropriate'.

Stars like Kylie have calendars booked months in advance so it's not surprising she wasn't available at relatively short notice.

BTW today is Kylie's birthday! She's 58 (!) today! Happy birthday Kylie!

You probably had to be there around 1989-1994 but for me he was totally beautiful. It helped that I loved INXS too. He was a little rugged but also had beautiful eyes and was magnetic on stage. I'll never forget seeing INXS at Wembley Stadium on my 18th birthday in 1991. Those tight trousers...!

Yes it's definitely one of those 'you had to be there' things. As I said above, MH wasn't really my type but I could absolutely see why so many women went weak at the knees for him. He was a rock star of the type which just doesn't exist anymore, and hasn't for a while. I doubt anyone much younger than 40 would get his appeal.

Finished! 🤩 Very good. Director had only done one thing prior so kudos. Might have to watch Beckham now. Lovely to see how close Kylie and Danni are, and her mum - in a shot where they were together, their eyes were identical.
I enjoyed it a lot. Happy birthday Kylie! 👏🏻💪🏻💐🪩🥳 And a shame it was cut out, but as Jason said in his interview about her : "She's got real 🔥."

SequinsandSolerosInTheSummertime · 28/05/2026 10:54

Although it's weird Netflix didn't push it back a week and release it on her birthday. Would have made more sense to me.
To those saying she hasn't wanted to be tied down, she has been in two five year relationships and was engaged once (20 year age gap aside, not sure that one would ever have worked out).
Although some of the other splits were amicable/mutual/blamed on long distance, doubt any would have wanted to appear on camera and it would have taken away from the heart of the documentary, that music is and was her first love (there's a song in there somewhere!)
Essentially the story arc is the phoenix

  1. Rise to fame, treatment by tabloids
  2. Reinvention, treatment by tabloids
  3. Recovery from cancer, treatment by tabloids
As with the meaning of her name, she has bounced back several times. You have to admire the resilience and tenacity. It is interesting how long she can keep going for. At 58, Madonna brought out Rebel heart. At 67, she has a new album (confessions 2) out in July. I adore Madge but have only liked a couple of tracks in the last decade, whereas some of Kylie's output has been infectious. Both have had cosmetic work done, their right to do so but another example of pressures on women in the industry (there must be a male counterpart other than Cliff/Barry Manilow!) It is true that others (Springsteen, Macca, Joel, Jagger, Pet Shop Boys) aren't/weren't asked as frequently when they are/were going to stop. It is a legitimate question I guess for those of us thinking that looks knackering, I'd take retirement. 😉 The acting vs singing was always weird though, as I thought the phrases "double threat" and "triple threat" were in usage, even back then. Kylie has dabbled/cameoed (Delinquents, Dr Who, The residence) but the hill I'll die on is Madge should have had an Oscar nom for Evita. I want to watch the documentary Paula now, it was on ch4 a few years ago. If anyone has a link to where I can find it, please let me know. I do remember watching one on Michael some time back - as Kylie gave them some personal footage iirc - I did feel for him as the accident left him with no sense of smell, so for someone who adored wine and food and women, that huge sensory loss left him vulnerable to needing to fill it with something else. And, for those who remember the drama where David Tennant faced a head injury, the change in personality and depression post head trauma is damned tough.

You forgot her all time career highlight.

I am of course referring to her star turn as Epponnee-Raelene Kathlene Darlene Charlene Craig.

I've got one word to say about that appearance. Iconic.

SequinsandSolerosInTheSummertime · 28/05/2026 13:07

"Kylie as Epponnee-Rae in Kath and Kim | NFSA" https://www.nfsa.gov.au/collection/item/kylie-epponnee-rae-kath-and-kim

Thanks for that 😁
Cheered me up. Have just finished the documentary Paula, which I found on YouTube. Good lord, what the press put her through, was abhorrent.
You forget just how bad it was back then. The Kylie doc brought that to the forefront (the budgie thing had passed me by at the time) but what they did to Paula Yates was incomprehensible.

Aiming4Optimistic · 28/05/2026 13:54

The Beckham documentary on Netflix is well worth a watch - we forget how much society has changed in what is considered acceptable to say about/to young people in the public eye. I thought VB came out of the Netflix doc much more sympathetically than she has been perceived historically. There were moments where I really felt for DB, but largely I thought he came across as incredibly selfish and hard to live with!

Have now seen the first two parts of Kylie. Agree that her treatment in the tabloids was pretty awful.
I can kind of see why JD is still a bit sore - it's got to sting a bit lot having your girlfriend run off with MH and to have people still ask you about her 30 odd years later! He was honest, which is refreshing, but I don't think I'd like to be his wife. That he's still bitter would annoy and upset me, if I was in her shoes.

miserablecat · 28/05/2026 14:27

I agree, and I had a lot of sympathy with Victoria in that one, especially when they were expected to up sticks and move to a different country - literally overnight! I actually think she came across a lot more likeable in Beckhams documentary than in her own one!

Its interesting to see how damaging and how much impact print and old analogue media had, even before the Internet age

I will never understand MH leaving Helena for Paula. She was stunning and seemed so lovely.

JuliettaCaeser · 28/05/2026 19:26

Was she fun though? You can be beautiful and “lovely” but dull as ditchwater. Paula Yates did seem like a right laugh.

I think the head injury played a huge part. He just wasn't the same after. This happened while he was with Helena

ZenNudist · 28/05/2026 20:27

I think she didn't give much details of her later life. It dwelled on the things we already knew. Her early relationships and illness. I liked the nostalgia.

I don't think JD came across badly and he's being paid to talk candidly about something that happened a lifetime ago. He fulfilled the assignment. I doubt he gave a shit any more.

SequinsandSolerosInTheSummertime · 28/05/2026 22:25

Oof, that was the headline in GQ in 95 "Would you trade her in for Paula Yates?"
Misogynist clickbait.
Her friend Catherine Mayer's Dear Paula, is well worth a read.

When she did Desert Island Discs she really swooned over Joshua Sasse - and then the engagement didn’t work out. He wasn’t mentioned at all in this, in fact no love interests were mentioned after OM. It made me wonder whether she felt ‘burned’ after speaking so openly about a lover only for the relationship not to last.

ismiledather · 28/05/2026 23:30

I agree with you op. Lots of words but saying nothing. Like the Beckhams documentary it is highly controlled. We learn nothing new from watching it.

I remember this!
She actually chose a poem he wrote about her as one of her 'discs' 😳

Disasterclass · 29/05/2026 06:19

Having watched this, the Beckham documentary and some of the boy/ girl band ones one of the themes across all of them is how awful the tabloid press were in the 90s/ early 2000s. Not sure if they’d get away with it now, but so many stars were built up then to be ripped apart.

Aiming4Optimistic · 27/05/2026 08:23

This is on my watchlist. Am not really a fan although I do think she's done amazingly well for someone whose voice isn't fantastic (imo). Something I don't like is that she declined to perform at King Charles' coronation, which would be fine if she'd always been anti monarchy, but she has performed at numerous royal variety performances etc in the past, when she had something to gain from it. To me, it seems wrong to refuse a request like that from the monarch - it feels disrespectful when she's had a lot of support within the UK over the years and has generated a lot of wealth from her popularity here. Idk, but that just doesn't give me good vibes and I'm not even staunchly pro royalty.

That would have been about the time she was recovering from her 2nd cancer, so I think we can give her a break for that!

Delatron · 29/05/2026 07:01

I guess she didn’t want the documentary to be about all her boyfriends but I did find the huge focus on MH then barely a mention of any subsequent boyfriends (who she was with for much longer) a bit strange.

Olivier was mentioned briefly then he obviously disappeared. Did he actually leave her when she was going through chemotherapy? There did also seem to be a big gap from around 2005 until 2019? So it really was focusing on her younger years and the cancer which took us to her late 30s. Then it skipped to 2019.

Didn't she end it with him because she suspected he has feelings for another woman. Maybe there's bad feeling between the 2 of them

Indigovelvet · 29/05/2026 09:12

The MH part of her life made the doc. more interesting. Moving on from good looking Jason to Michael tossing his curly hair and making those pouts. The other guys might be boring.

But it's true that Kylie didn't have a lot to say generally - sat in her chair smiling about it all, and some tears.

Yes agree I found it really dull. Tbf I wasn't a big Kylie fan anyway she seems like a nice enough person but not particuarly interesting or charismatic imo.

Yes, these NF celeb 'documentaries' really are not documentaries at all. They're essentially PR puff pieces and need to be viewed in that light.

I agree that away from the stage, Kylie is not very interesting. Though perhaps it would be more accurate to say she is very guarded. She's one of those people who just lights up and transforms into a shining star the minute she steps on stage. She must have something going for her, to still be relevant and successful 40 years on from 'Neighbours', despite being not that talented in the classical sense.

MiniCoopers · 29/05/2026 12:02

The point I took from it was they focussed on the MH bit but not so much other partners because in her words she’s always been searching for someone like that but didn’t find it. I did find it odd she clearly talked about ‘doing chemo in Paris’, was living with Olivier Martinez, photos of him with her etc but she didn’t talk about him at all?

Yes i thought the same. She didnt really go into detail about OM when that was probably one of her more serious relationships, and one in which they attempted ivf. Maybe that was too difficult to talk about....
