Poor Jason Donovan. He's still clearly so cut up about being dumped for Michael Hutchence. Kylie lit up talking about MH and didn't express any regret for hurting J. I wonder if she will feel bad when she sees how much he is still affected.

I once heard someone say that Kylie says a lot of words in interviews but doesn't really give specifics.
Big revelations:

  • return of cancer in 2021 (only given 30 secs at the end)
  • She did IVF. Didn't give any details tho eg was it just egg freezing or was it embryos, did she ever get pregnant. (Not suggesting for a minute it's any of our business but i know from my own experience you have to decide whether to do just eggs or ask your partner to use his sperm as embryos freeze better so might have been a hell of a conversation with Olivier Martinez.) I got the impression she didn't get too far with it sadly - the implication with the song lyrics being that nothing ever came into being.
Inferences I think we are to draw:
  • she took drugs with MH (not news)
  • she had a boob job in the early days. Remember how Britney got such a hard time for the same many years later!

I’ve got this on my watchlist, I was never a huge kylie fan but I did like some of her stuff and saw her in concert many years back. Can’t blame her for running off with Michael though, he was my pin up for years, I’d choose him over Jason any day.

Delatron · 25/05/2026 10:08

Exactly @vxixv it’s really glossed over that he was a serial cheat and basically unfaithful to every woman he was with. But now she is left thinking ‘what if’ and also she hasn’t felt that intense love again.

They would never have worked long term.

Yes i agree that she talks but doesn't seem to say anything much. Or rather her speech is stilted and doesn't flow or hold me.

I’d agree - most seemed rather performative. But maybe she was doing it for the money at what is essentially the twilight of her career, and I couldn’t blame her for that.
i also got the sense that she’s still a little girl in many senses, maybe due to her mother accompanying her many times, and never having to face the normal adversities in life. That said, she fought through her cancer which the treatment in those days must have had a terrible effect on tiny body.
Finally - JD. I still morn a love affair of 38 years ago, something my husband has always known about (and that he was no good for me). I suspect there’s more of you that do.

PuppyMonkey · 25/05/2026 10:19

The doc was okay - but I’d heard most of this story before (although the home videos/ candid footage was lovely). I actually felt they didn’t include enough clips of the music tbh.

LethargeMarg · 25/05/2026 10:39

I really enjoyed the doc had forgotten how many great songs she had even in the PWL era.
imo Jason ruined his career by suing the face for libel when they said he was gay. There was quite a backlash for that and I would imagine alienated a lot of his potential audience.

SomethingFun · 25/05/2026 10:41

I love Kylie and I’m really pleased she has had the success she has had. It was shit how she was treated in the 80s when she was getting going, especially by all the men that were making loads of money from her.

Kylie didn’t owe JD a relationship because he loved her, it didn’t necessarily look like a healthy love anyway. MH seems like the kind of man who had a profound impact on anyone he decided to give his attention to. Tbh I would love something that intense and life changing to reminisce about myself 😁

I loved the doc, binge watched it in one sitting!

I was 10 when I should be so lucky came out and was a huge fan of Neighbours and both Kylie and Jason (had all their albums on cassette and posters on my wall. I wanted to be Kylie:)

I'd also cut Jason some slack though, he was clearly so much more into her than she was to him and that really showed in the doc. I actually think he's just being pretty honest, wasn't going to sugar coat how he felt at the time, and was really hurt by the very public break-up(both heart and ego). Just like a part of her has never properly got over MH, I'd say the same could be said of him for Kylie.

I warmed to her so much in the doc, as others have said, she must be incredibly resilient. All that shit she got at the start of her career from middled aged men (and also from Paula Yates who did a really prickly interview with her, obviously didnt like the fact she was an ex of MH!).

I found it very sad she never had the family she desired, especially seeing how important family is to her. But (even subconsciously) trying to recreate what she had with MH was never going end in 2.4 children and a white picket fence I guess.

I also loved her relationship with Nick Cave - which i didn't really know much about previously (just aware that they had duetted together). But these were some of my favourite moments in the doc.

Going to have to listen to her early pwl albums again, as they are such comforting nostalgia for me!

Bravo !! This sums up what I wanted to say

Watched it last night . Not a big fan of hers but did like - Confide in Me and her collab with Nick Cave . Hated the Stock , Aitken and Waterman stuff .
But I have always admired that she seemed to have been good to and loved by her fans .
She is very beautiful and especially after the split with Michael Hutchence .
I agree that JD didn’t come across very well . I wonder why he agreed to be interviewed . I am not sure his current wife would be chuffed , as he did seem slightly bitter .
Michael Hutchence was such a sex god - so would have been difficult for JD to lose Kylie to him
. JD also admitted he was a fan of MH too .

Kylie did seem to view MH as her one true love and I also got the impression that no one else matched up to him .

It was very difficult to see the paparazzi hounding her when she was undergoing her cancer treatment . Also very sad to hear that the cancer has recurred , but thankfully due to. covid , Kylie could deal with it privately at this time .
There wasn’t much mention of Oliver Martinez , other than the footage on the motorbike .

I think her family came across as very loving and a close and down to earth family . Danni seemed very close to her , although I did think that it was difficult to see any facial expressions on her as she has had quite a lot of work done , although does look good .

Loved Nick Cave in it , he was very sweet about her . Have read a few articles about him recently and was impressed about the support he gives to other bereaved families . He tragically lost two of his sons .
I was quite surprised that K did seem to have a decent voice and able to hit some high notes .

I think she came across well in it .

Edited

Mirroring my thoughts on it perfectly. Not a ‘fan’ as in following her career, I’ve not bought a record or concert ticket and don’t like the early Waterman stuff (and cannot stand Pete Waterman). Really liked Confide in Me and used to watch it a lot on The Box (if anyone remembers that). Was very impressed by those high notes and the fact she could actually sing! That was a bit of a revelation to be honest. I thought she looked absolutely gorgeous in that gold dress at Glastonbury.

Same here. First episode was dull, it improved in other episodes slightly eg the MH years but I don’t feel she revealed anything of her true self.

It's interesting. She's been hugely famous for about 40 years but we know very little about her. It might be partly a generational thing in that her peak fame was long before the age of social media and oversharing. But I also think she prefers it that way. Behind the campy, gushy exterior she seems quite hard nosed and very protective of her public image. That's not meant as a criticism at all, just an observation.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2026 16:43

vxixv · 25/05/2026 10:03

I thought the same: that she’s romanticised the whole relationship. This often happens when someone dies young. They’re immortalised forever as young and beautiful and a part of our carefree youth.

In reality MH might have gone on to have a few marriages and divorces, a few more children, possibly a realisation that he couldn’t carry on with the lifestyle, or possibly not. If he’d lived, Kylie would’ve seen him age like she has. MH would be nearly 70 if he’d lived.

She’s glamourised that relationship. It’s frozen in time. It’s become something larger and possibly more meaningful than it would’ve been if she’d lived through it all together, rather than looking back at that gorgeous 37 year old rock god.

Absolutely. As I said above, they were only together 2 years, and 'together' would probably have meant spending weeks or even months at a time apart from each other. It was essentially an extended fling.

No way would they have lasted even if it hadn't been for the cheating, which I don't doubt he was doing from the start of their relationship. He didn't seem like a guy who was into long term relationships, a bit like Kylie herself. I don't think he and Paula Yates wouldn't have lasted either.

But of course she's going to look back on their brief relationship with rose tinted glasses. They were young and gorgeous, at the peak of their fame and hotness.

As a woman of a similar vintage to Kylie, if I'd been lucky enough to have had such an intense love affair, I too would be looking back at that time with a wistful sigh over a glass of Kylie's best Rose!

ThisJadeBear · 25/05/2026 18:07

@IcedPurple I think MH changed so much after that head injury he incurred when he was with Helena. She said it changed his personality.
For the last few years of life he looked awful.
I think he was always going to be a bit of a different memory. As you say he’d be a pensioner by now.
I think Kylie has never settled with anyone and we’d been sold the story she was wronged every time but I felt that she has never really wanted to settle down.
MH was absolutely beautiful in his prime. If you watch the Wembley 90 gig he was just glorious to watch.
Whichever Gallagher called him a has-been had no idea of how adored he was.

Yeah that's what I think too.

She consistently chose very physically attractive men (good for her!) and prioritised her career over all else. Which is perfectly fine, but I don't think she wanted to take the time out of her career to 'settle down', and I can't say I blame her.

MH was absolutely beautiful in his prime. If you watch the Wembley 90 gig he was just glorious to watch.

It's funny. Even in his prime, he often looked a bit geeky in photos imo. And apparently he was quite shy and sensitive in person. But once on stage, he just transformed into a sex god. He wasn't particularly my type (yes I'm sure he would have been devastated to hear that) but there was something undeniably magnetic and sexual about him.

Not really surprising that all those years later, Kylie just can't get him out of her head, is it?

HoldMyWine · 25/05/2026 21:22

Don’t forget Kylie wasn’t with MH when he died. When he died he was in a destructive, drug addled relationship with Paula Yates. Kylie probably had him at
his best. I haven’t watched yet but will
do so.

ScotiaLass · 25/05/2026 21:30

Do you really think she had a boob job? I thought the mention of that was a comment on how ludicrous and sexualising the press intrusion was in the early days.

I also didn't think Jason Donovan was bitter. He seemed broken hearted and I think he's still a bit in love with Kylie. I wonder what his wife thought when she watched it.

RhannionKPSS · 25/05/2026 23:02

TBH who would not dump Jason for Michael… he was a beautiful man, sadly missed

Completely agree. Sums up my thoughts on it. Both DH and I thought they could have got another episode out of it though. Felt like the last few years were quite hurried.

JuliettaCaeser · 25/05/2026 23:11

She came across as a Peter Pan like character I thought. Odd that she was still so stuck on MH that was never going to last you’d think all these years later she would have the perspective to see that.

I was horrified at how she was treated the questions she was asked in interviews and the cruel criticism in the press.

ScullyD · Yesterday 01:45

@IcedPurple but what do you mean by settle down? If you watched the doc she said she underwent IVF. So she clearly did want to have kids at some point but couldn’t. The cancer obviously also upended a lot for her.

rivalsbinge · Yesterday 02:00

Loved it, was a big weirded out by nick cage and his massive hands. He really was an odd choice for her but was so lovely how he talked about how special she was, she literally said yes to every opportunity and for the best results, she just shows what people can achieve even with hardships, oh and I enjoyed the family clips her parents seem such great people.

Yes I thought the same and you could see the pain when she was (quite unreasonably) asked about wanting kids in an interview.
Interesting though that Olivier Martinez wasnt really mentioned and yet it presumably was with him she started ivf.
And then later he married Halle Berry and had a child with her....and that must have hurt a lot.

GloiredeDijon · Yesterday 08:05

My main observation was that Jason Donovan had tried to control her and minimise her career opportunities in order to keep her with him.
That isn’t love, it is typical male selfishness.
How many young girls are persuaded to put their life second in order to please their boyfriend?
I’ve never warmed to JD and this was a great insight into what a nasty little man he is.

Reading all the comments with interest

We don’t have Netflix but I’d love to watch this, need to work out a way!

I loved Kylie so much in the late 80s when she hit the big time, my primary school memories involve lots of Kylie songs, I had her album on vinyl and played it so many times I must have driven my family mad!

I still love Kylie now and think she is such an amazing woman and obviously has achieved so much as an entertainer, she certainly has that je ne sais pas 😄

It came across as though MH was the love of Kylies life … and she was just one of many
to him sadly.
