Nine Perfect Strangers - same author as Big Little Lies - anyone going to watch?

Starts on Friday on Amazon Prime, with Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy and other well-known names.

Trailer and review makes it sound intriguing and I love the first season of Big Little Lies so I'll definitely be watching!

Bobby Cavanale is worth a static episode. Love him in this.
Nobody's gonna steal your nose made me laugh out loud, don't know why. And the grieving parents/Heather's guilt re the asthma meds was well acted. Asher Keddie has been a tour de force in this. Not okay with it always being women as the primary caregiver/mother's job to read the side effects though! He could have ffs.
I also love the fact that it is Melissa McCarthy's husband in real life playing Paul Drabble! Grin and I liked the in-joke of Luke Evans being able to rattle off Cabaret showtunes...

I'm not sure the slower pace for 5 and 6 would have been an issue had all 8 episodes been released at once - I am a devil for bingewatching. Making me wait, doing a slow release, increases expectation so you feel more of a lull when you've had to wait a week for it and it is still dealing with protocol effects but as a study of grief and guilt, it was well done.
Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Clearly Napoleon and Heather are still stuck, as is Masha.

The acting and casting is good, except Carmel, who I just don’t find believable (could be the script’s fault though, not hers).

QueenBee52 · 10/09/2021 01:53

I like Carmel... she's tragically broken from the inside out... now we know why .. I hope she has a breakthrough in this 'weird' therapy 😳

LopsidedWombat · 10/09/2021 03:03

I am still really enjoying it. There's an uneasy feeling that anything could happen and I cannot tell whether they are all going to end up dead or leave feeling healed and like new people Grin

QueenBee52 · 10/09/2021 03:08

Masha is soooooo weird

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/09/2021 11:43

Weirder and weirder

Is Marsha trying to get Zack to come back from the dead

If she can do that, then she can get her daughter back

Is that right ?

waterlego · 11/09/2021 15:42

It’s quite slow but I’m still watching. The highlight of last night’s episode for me was Francis and Tony’s kiss. Epic!

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/09/2021 16:18

Masha has not had any inner peace since her daughter died clearly, despite all the health, meditation etc Using psychedelics to try and commune with the dead is one way to deal with it, I guess, but like all snake oil remedies (mediums, spiritualists etc) is a desperate act of a grieving mother. She is hoping she can visualise her daughter if others can visualise theirs. Am guessing here as I do not recall any of it from the book.

QueenBee52 · 11/09/2021 17:26

Ive not read the book...

But those who have .. do you think its following the book closely or might they take a differing path to the final episode ?

Newgirls · 11/09/2021 18:18

Closely at the moment

Newgirls · 11/09/2021 18:19

Though I don’t remember so much Zack

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/09/2021 18:25

Have just read a spoiler article - allegedly they are taking another tack. There have been a few differences between book and adaptation - will come back to this in a fortnight, once show's over.

charliebear78 · 11/09/2021 19:00

I actually enjoyed it last night when I watched, quite a few funny moments and love Tony and Francis together.
I think she is using the Family has Guinea pigs-then she can try to contact her dead daughter if it works!
Is the past lawsuit something to do with trying this before?

I haven’t read the book but seems most books that go to films the plot changes

Yes looks that way doesn’t it. I don’t remember that from the book but sounds like a good plot
secretangel · 12/09/2021 10:57

Is episode 6 the last one?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/09/2021 11:51

All that could've been condensed into 3 episodesHmm

Egghead68 · 12/09/2021 12:40

Agree

yip

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2021 20:22

@secretangel there are 8

faithfulbird20 · 14/09/2021 03:12

Omg it's really really slow. Why didn't they just release it as a movie or have less episodes?

arield · 14/09/2021 07:06

What's the rush

I’ve just reread the book as I couldn’t remember much about it and I wanted to see how different it is. There’s quite a few differences already (some already noted on the thread):

  • book is set in Australia but TV series set in California
  • Lars was a lawyer in the book, journalist in TV series
  • Tony wasn’t on medication in the book
  • In the book, the retreat started with a few days of ‘noble silence’ where none of them were allowed to speak or look at each other. Understandably they haven’t replicated this in the TV series!
  • the goat/foraging episode, the grave digging and the sack race didn’t happen in the book
  • Masha had a heart attack in the book, but was shot in the TV series

Will be interesting to see what they do with the ending!
