Nine Perfect Strangers - same author as Big Little Lies - anyone going to watch?

Starts on Friday on Amazon Prime, with Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy and other well-known names.

Trailer and review makes it sound intriguing and I love the first season of Big Little Lies so I'll definitely be watching!

I am reading this book atm - half way through so no spoilers from me.

I think tranquilium place is getting to me. Atm I cant read more than 2 pages without falling asleep.

It is the perfect bedtime book for this reason Grin

Watching episode 2 now..,

it's hilarious ... brilliant cast 🎉

SequinsandStiIettos · 19/08/2021 01:01

Read it 2 years ago so yes, will watch it despite it being batshit. Luke Evans is a decent enough reason!

Do you have to have read/seen BLL or is it totally unrelated?

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 19/08/2021 01:41

I didn't know about this but enjoyed the book so will watch if it's included in Prime

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 19/08/2021 01:42

@BillyBearSpam unrelated - the only thing they have in common is they are both novels by the same author

QueenBee52 · 19/08/2021 02:06

not related at all...

BLL was phenomenal though ... definitely worth watching

SequinsandStiIettos · 19/08/2021 02:58

And Manny Jacinto (Jason in the Good Place) is in it. Be still my beating heart

silkmonkey · 19/08/2021 07:13

I listened to the audiobook for this and really enjoyed it, definitely more so than if I’d read it. I’m not sure NC is right for Marsha but I’ll keep an open mind for now…. Hopefully it’ll be entertaining anyway.

Ahh thank you! Will give it a go

I’ve been binging White Lotus on Sky Atlantic and it’s got a similar vibe to this. Would recommend. It’s got beautiful scenery, an ensemble cast and dark humour.

KillingMeDeftly · 19/08/2021 12:30

@Ulysses I just finished that and thought it was brilliant.

Definitely a Nicole Kidman vehicle I would say. She is an Executive Producer on it.
I find her face so distracting I am sorry to say - and did just as much in the one with Hugh Grant. Her clothes were loveely in that though, as in this.
I haven't read the book, but quite like the premise; I usually avoid Melissa McCarthy but can watch Michael Shannon and Luke Evans in anything. (Oh I sound like a woman-hater - I promise I am not; with NK it's the distraction, and MMcC, just never taken too her, as she just seems to play MMcC.)
Slightly linked - just watched The White Lotus - and that drew me and repulsed me - esp. Steve Zahn in ep. 1 - in equal measure.

Yes, me too. Although some parts were quite definitely a bit off-putting (extras in the suitcase?). I liked the little analysis after each episode - and the last one tied it up somewhat neatly.
SequinsandStiIettos · 20/08/2021 06:56

Just finished episode 1 - very good adaptation so far

Oblomov21 · 20/08/2021 07:19

I liked big little lies, so will record this.

Oblomov21 · 20/08/2021 07:22

Blonde and I agree on all things re NK and her emotionless face, in BLL and with Hugh. Sad

bsquared · 20/08/2021 08:07

@silkmonkey

Whoever reads the audiobook is absolutely hilarious. I loved it! Am really looking forward to watching.

Daisy829 · 20/08/2021 08:13

Oh I’ve got this book to read but given the reviews I might just watch the series instead!

Oblomov21 · 20/08/2021 09:39

9 strangers in a retreat with guru NK.
One really angry. Sounds like 'The Wilds'.

The Guardian says that works in her favour in this role:

"It’s a role that allows Kidman to make the most of her almost emotionless mask-like, very smooth, otherworldly face and intelligent, knowing eyes."

I enjoy Liane Moriarty's books and agree this one was poor, like she was pressured to come up with something great after the success of BLL. But it could make a good TV show, I'll give it a try. I think my favourite book of hers is The Last Anniversary, I wonder if they'll adapt that one. I love the 'Australianness' of her books and they always seem to remove that though...

OchNoAgain · 20/08/2021 10:38

It was a bit of a mad book, like others say really good until about 3/4 of the way through and then the end was bizarre but I'll definitely watch the show.

Knittingupastorm · 20/08/2021 10:40

I’ve read all her books and this one is the definite odd one out. The rest are good, this one was awful so I won’t be watching it.
